Fincantieri Marinette Marine launched LCS 27, the future USS Nantucket, for the U.S. Navy.The ship’s sponsor, Polly Spencer, broke the ceremonial champagne bottle on the bow of the ship declaring the vessel christened. Big investments, lean manufacturing techniques borrowed from the automotive industry, and a more engaged workforce have revamped the Wisconsin shipyard where Italy's Fincantieri SpA builds the Freedom variant of the U.S. Navy's coastal warships for prime contractor Lockheed Martin Corp. Fincantieri invested $100 million in recent years to transform the 1940s era shipyard into a state-of-the-art facility, where seven LCS ships are now under construction, including three that have already been launched into the river.

The U.S. Navy christened the future USS Detroit (LCS 7), the fourth Littoral Combat Ship of the Freedom variant, in a ceremony at Marinette Marine Shipyard in Marinette, Wisconsin, Oct. 18. The Secretary of the Navy, the Honorable Ray Mabus, delivered the principal address at the ceremony, and Barbara Levin served as the ship's sponsor. As ship sponsor, Levin is considered a permanent member of the ship's crew and is expected to advocate for the well-being of both ship and crew. The Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT)-led industry team launched the nation's third Littoral Combat Ship (LCS), Fort Worth, at the Marinette Marine shipyard. The 389-ft Fort Worth was launched into the Menominee River. Just prior to its launch, the ship's sponsor, Congresswoman Kay Granger of Texas, christened Fort Worth with the traditional smashing of a champagne bottle across the ship's bow. In March 2009, the U.S. Navy awarded the Lockheed Martin-led industry team a contract to construct Fort Worth. Only 20 months later, the ship is 80 percent complete. Now formally christened and launched, Fort Worth will continue to undergo outfitting and testing at Marinette Marine before delivery to the Navy in 2012.

Vice Admiral James D. Hull, Commander, Coast Guard Atlantic Area, will be the keynote speaker at the launch of the Coast Guard Cutter Alder Saturday in Marinette, Wis. Alder is the last of the fleet of Juniper B-class, 225-foot sea-going buoy tenders, to be built at the Marinette Marine Corporation shipyard. The Coast Guard's Buoy Tender Replacement Project, a major acquisition to replace the WW II era 180-ft. buoy tenders, began in 1996 when the Cutter Juniper was commissioned. Mrs. Judith Hull will serve as the ship’s sponsor and christen the vessel as Coast Guard Cutter Alder, when it is launched from the Marinette shipyard. Mrs. Hull will christen the Alder by breaking a bottle of champagne across its bow.

On April 21, 2004 the U.S. Coast Guard will officially accept the Coast Guard Cutter SEQUOIA. The cutter was launched into the Menominee River at Marinette Marine Corporation on August 23, 2003 and has since been undergoing outfitting and sea trials. This date marks the first day the ship's crew will take responsibility for the cutter and the cutter will be placed into a temporary “In-Commission Special” status. The cutter's official commissioning will take place at her homeport of Apra Harbor, Guam. Coast Guard Cutter SEQUOIA is the fifteenth Juniper Class Seagoing Buoy Tender and the tenth “B Class” cutter built by Marinette Marine Corporation. Currently the Coast Guard has contracted for eleven “B Class” cutters.

A fire damaged the LCS-1 the first Littoral Combat Ship, Freedom, under construction at Marinette Marine Corp. Authorities suspect a welding accident triggered the fire. According to reports, a Marinette Fire said the fire started in a berthing area where workers were using welding and grinding equipment. It took about an hour to extinguish. Fire officials did not immediately release an estimate of the damage. No injuries were reported. The Freedom is expected to be the Navy's first littoral combat ship for use close to shore. Workers were finishing the 377-ft. vessel as it floated in the Menominee River. It was about 80 percent done at the time of the fire and due to be delivered next year.

History was made on September 23 when the nation’s first Littoral Combat Ship, Freedom (LCS-1) – the inaugural ship in an entirely new class of U.S. Navy surface warships – was christened and launched at the Marinette Marine shipyard. Another delay in the U.S. Coast Guard's acceptance of the new icebreaker Mackinaw won't affect the ship's Dec. The skipper and crew have been beset by a series of hold-ups in refining the ship's systems by the Marinette Marine Corporation to the satisfaction of the Coast Guard. A scheduled acceptance ceremony was postponed from Tuesday until Thursday until more details can be completed. The vessel is scheduled to undergo loading of supplies and a training period before departing the Menominee River Dec. 8 for a shake-down cruise that is scheduled to end in Cheboygan Dec. 17. Once the Coast Guard accepts the ship as delivered, the countdown begins towards the Mackinaw's arrival in its homeport.
