Crowley Sells Ice-breaking Cargo Barge to Tagiuk

Crowley Marine Services has sold a 205’ x 90’ x 15’ former ice-strengthened, icebreaker / cargo barge, Arctic Endeavor, to Tagiuk LLC., the ship broker Marcon International, Inc. reported. The 3,029mtdw barge was built in 1982 by Gunderson Bros. to support resupply sailings to ports in the Arctic while being pushed by two 2,100HP Point-Class tugs. The barge was unique in having a wide spoon shaped bow tapering aft from 90’ at its widest point at frame 25, a tapered hull under the waterline and a reinforced ice step. The Arctic Endeavor was converted in 1999 by Duwamish Shipyard to an ABS +A1, ice classed, double-hull oil response barge for use in the Beaufort Sea, northeast of Deadhorse, Alaska. The barge was laid up in Puget Sound at the time of the sale.

Mississippi River Reopened after Barge Breakaway

The Mississippi River has been reopened for restricted vessel traffic after a barge breakaway on Saturday lead the U.S. Coast Guard to close the section from mile marker 771 to mile marker 750 approximately 20 miles north of Memphis, Tenn.   The vessel Cooperative Enterprise was towing 42 barges containing corn or soybeans when they broke away Saturday. So far 38 barges have been secured, and four grounded barges are waiting to be lightered which is restricting the waterway, Coast Guard Sector Lower Mississippi River reported.   The area is open to one-way traffic to down-bound vessels.   There have been no reported injuries, pollution or environmental impact.   The cause of the incident is under investigation.

Damen Shoalbuster completes 14,572 nm Round Trip

The SMS Shoalbuster, a 26-metre Damen Shoalbuster 2609 owned and operated by GSS Marine Services based in Rosyth, Scotland, has recently completed a 14,572 nm round trip that included two transatlantic crossings. The Shoalbuster range is designed as a multi-role workboat optimised for shallow waters, however its high bow and sturdy construction means that it is capable of handling even ocean crossings. When the SMS Shoalbuster departed Stathelle, Norway, earlier this year, no-one realised that she would be gone for so long or sail so far.

As summer slowly fades to memory and commercial vessels have less frequent encounters with recreational vessels of all sizes, shapes and descriptions on America’s inland waterways, it might be a good time to review a strange, but not completely unusual incident that occurred in Louisiana on a navigable channel in the lower Mississippi River late last May. A workboat was pushing a small barge through a narrow tributary on a job to deliver it to its destination approximately twelve miles away from where the transit originated.

Ryba Marine’s crane barge CT-150 (150’ x 50’ x 10’) was recently in drydock at Great Lakes Shipyard for maintenance and repairs.   Great Lakes Shipyard’s contract, awarded by Ryba Marine on October 28, 2016, included drydocking, steel repairs and ABS Load Line Inspection and renewal. The work wrapped up on November 14, 2016.   As a regular customer at Great Lakes Shipyard over the past year, Ryba Marine has sent several vessels for drydocking at the yard, including dump scow GL-5 (170’ x 41’ x 15’), GL-6 (170’ x 41’ x 15’), tug Thomas R. Morrish and tug Kathy Lynn.

Meercat Workboats’ Move to New Premises

Meercat Workboats yesterday moved from Portchester to new, purpose built premises in Hythe Marine Park, Southampton, UK. To coincide with the move the company’s management team has been restructured, two new vessels have been delivered and one new order confirmed. The new site is 1,600 sqm, has two 20-tonne gantry cranes, a machine shop, an electrical workshop, a hydraulic workshop, aluminum welding bays, steel fabrication bays, dedicated stores, offices and customer parking. A sum of circa £500,000 has been invested in the move.

Barge Numbering System Proposal Status

Outside of the requirements outlined in OPA 90, there typically aren't many regulations affecting the barge industry. One still-pending piece of legislation is the proposal of undocumented barge numbering. The Abandoned Barge Act of 1992 added a new chapter and amended another chapter, requiring the numbering of undocumented barges measuring more than 100 gt operating on the navigable waters of the U.S. In enacting the legislation, Congress noted an abandoned barge could become the site for the disposal of hazardous cargoes, wastes and petroleum products, which could lead to water pollution incidents. According to the USCG, numbering these undocumented barges will increase owner accountability…

Ingram Barge Acquires 92 Barges from Investment Fund

Ingram Barge Company announced the acquisition of 92 barges, including 17 tank barges with 10,000 barrel capacity, 62 jumbo covered hopper barges with fiber lift covers, and 13 jumbo open hopper barges from an affiliate of Ospraie Special Opportunities Fund.  All of the acquired barges were built between 2004 and 2008. U.S. Barge Delivers for Harley Marine

U.S. Barge delivered another petroleum barge to Harley Marine Services. The Barge Anne Elizabeth was christened on October 4, 2010 by her namesake, Anne Elizabeth Hall. Barge Anne Elizabeth measures 241’ x 64’ 6”, with a depth of 23’ 6”. The barge has a carrying capacity of 31,500 barrels. The double-hulled barge is OPA 90-compliant, with vapor collection piping. The barge has two isolated cargo systems. The main cargo is intended to be fuel oil, and the auxiliary system will handle marine gas oil (MGO). “Working closely with Harley Marine’s technical and operations group, U.S. Barge continues to construct and outfit high quality vessels that meet our expectations. Kirby Expands With Three New Units

Kirby Corporation Announces Purchase of Three Coastwise Tank Barge and Tug Units; Purchased Seaboats, Inc. coastwise tank barge fleet consisting of three 80,000 barrel tank barge and tug units for $42.3 million in cash. Kirby Corporation has announced the purchase of the coastwise tank barge fleet of Seaboats, Inc. and affiliated companies consisting of three 80,000 barrel coastwise tank barge and tug units for $42.3 million in cash. The three coastwise tank barge and tug units currently operate along the East Coast and have an average age of five years. Financing of the purchase was through Kirby's $250 million revolving credit facility.

Barge Partially Sinks

The AP has reported that a barge hauling 800,000 gallons of liquid asphalt that strayed from its tow has partially sunk to the river bottom, according to the Coast Guard. The Coast Guard said the barge doesn't seem in danger of breaking. The river current has pushed the 80-foot barge sideways against a railroad bridge near downtown Louisville. Nauert said the barge is believed to be stable. The barge was one of three that got away from their tow Thursday when a connecting cable broke or separated. Two of the barges were caught, but the third went over the McAlpine Dam spillway and eventually wedged against the bridge. Officials can't tell how much has leaked from the barge, but Nauert said there was no evidence of significant leaking. Barge owner Magnolia Marine Transportation Co.

Trinity Industries to Construct Tank Barges for Kirby

Kirby Corporation has signed a contract with Trinity Industries, Inc. for the construction of 16 double-hull, 30,000 barrel capacity, inland black oil tank barges. Kirby plans to take delivery of seven of the tank barges in 2003 and nine in the first half of 2004. The total purchase price of the 16 barges is approximately $29 million, with an estimated $12.6 million to be expended in 2003 and $16.4 million in 2004. Under the terms of the contract, Kirby has an option for the construction of 16 additional 30,000 barrel capacity black oil tank barges. In October 2002, Kirby entered into a barge management agreement with Coastal Towing, Inc. ("Coastal") to manage 54 black oil tank barges owned by Coastal, along with the 66 barges Kirby operates in its black oil fleet.

Brownsville Marine Products Hopes to Cash In

According to the Tribune Review, an aging barge fleet coupled with high scrap steel pricing and demand from the biodiesel and ethanol industries has launched a barge-building boom, the likes of which hasn't been seen since the 1970s, industry experts say. Brownsville Marine Products, LLC, of Fayette County, hopes to cash in on the construction boom, and is building barges as it can, carrying on a tradition of barge building on that stretch of the Monongahela River that began with the old Hillman Barge Co. in 1938. Nationally, a fleet of more than 27,000 barges moves over 800 million tons a year of raw materials and finished goods over the 25,000-mile inland waterway system, adding about $5 billion annually to the U.S. economy, according to the trade group.

U.S. Barge Delivers for Harley Marine

U.S. Barge recently delivered another high capacity petroleum barge to Harley Marine Services. Barge Sixty-Five Roses is a unique design from Elliott Bay Design Group. With new efficiency and voluntary environmental features incorporated into the design, the barge continues Harley’s pattern of continuous improvement. Barge Sixty-Five Roses is a 422 x 76-ft. tank barge with capacity of 83,600 barrels. Outfitting requirements include two vertical turbine cargo pump systems, a cargo heating system, a vapor recovery system, two hose cranes, and five hydraulic mooring winches. There are provisions for the future addition of a self-contained vapor processing unit. All outfitting was completed in house by U.S. Barge. U.S. Barge’s facility is ideally arranged for construction of very large barges.

DH Barge Construction Keeps Yards Humming

Shipyards in most major shipbuilding centers around the country are busy with double-hulled barge projects. The required phase out by OPA-90 regulations of single hulled barges over 25 years old by 2005 is the reason why there is considerable activity in this sector. Many petroleum transportation companies are building new barges and some barges with useful life remaining are being double hulled…so there is a good mix of new construction and renovation. This elevated level of building activity has led one strictly repair yard to take on new barge construction activity. For example the Manitowoc Marine Group's repair yard in Toledo, Ohio has its first new build in 15 years. They have under construction a 110,000 barrel barge for Hornbeck Offshore Transportation LLC, Mandeville, La.

Bollinger Delivers 80,000 BBL Tank Barge

Lockport, La., Bollinger Gretna, L.L.C. of Harvey, La., a Bollinger shipyard, has delivered B. No. 284, a double hull 80,000 bbl oil tank barge built to meet the requirements of the Oil Pollution Act of 1990 (OPA’90) to Bouchard Ocean Services, Melville, N.Y. Barge B. No. 284 is a manned ocean, clean oil tank barge measuring 399-ft, 11-inches long, with a 74-ft beam and a depth of 28-ft, 6-inches. The barge is built to, and certified by, American Bureau of Shipping and United States Coast Guard to meet the requirements of OPA’90 with 12 cargo compartments and three separate pumping systems.

Long established in the trucking, warehousing, cargo transfer and barging industry of Thailand, S.P. Inter Marine can be described as a broadly horizontally integrated firm. Ingram Barge Company say they will be building 20 tank barges in 2015 to meet growing demand for chemical shipments. While most of the company’s recent tank barges have come through acquisitions, this continued expansion in their barge fleet coincides with a 10-year plan that began in 2007 to build barges with Trinity Industries. Barge Fleet Lighting

Within the U.S. Coast Guard Eighth District alone, marine casualty data indicates that over the past 12 years, 44 recreational vessels have struck (allided) moored barges within barge fleets, resulting in 26 fatalities and 44 injuries. These serious incidents involving barges highlight the critical need for barge operators to properly display navigation lights in accordance with the Inland Navigation Rules. As with all marine casualty investigations, the Coast Guard seeks to identify the specific causal factors involved in each incident, including whether the involved barge fleets are sufficiently lit. The Coast Guard would like to take this opportunity to remind barge operators of their obligation to meet current barge lighting regulations.

Barge Collision Shuts Waterway

HOUSTON - Coast Guard Marine Safety Unit Galveston temporarily closed the Intracoastal Waterway in Freeport, Texas Tuesday night after a barge collision occured in the Kirby Barge Fleeting area. The tug boat Drum Point, was pushing two barges loaded with Naphtha, when the collision occurred. The third barge contained more than 1 million gallons of Cumene. The collision resulted in a fracture to the hull of the barge containing Cumene. However, no cargo was spilled into the water, and the barges carrying Naphtha were only slightly damaged. The Coast Guard established a safety zone in the waterway surrounding the damaged barge. The Coast Guard also temporarily closed the Intracoastal Waterway until the barge could be moved to repair facilities at the Dow Chemical Plant.
