Foran Employed in Production Design of Pushboat
FORAN has been used by the naval architecture firm ROBERT ALLAN LTD. in the review of the production design of 6000 HP Shallow Draft Pushboat, to be built in Erin Shipyard in Manaus, Brazil. ROBERT ALLAN Ltd., a Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering Company based in Vancouver, Canada signed a contract with SENER Ingeniería y Sistemas S.A. (SENER) for the use of FORAN FVIEWER during this project. The 6000 HP Shallow Draft Pushboat was designed by ROBERT ALLAN LTD. for Hidrovias do Brasil. First Carrousel-RAVE Tug Under Construction in Hamburg
Construction of the first Carrousel-RAVE tug has begun at Theodor Buschmann Shipyard in Hamburg. This novel design features the Robert Allan Ltd. and Voith Turbo GmbH & Co. KG developed RAVE propulsion with drives arranged inline along the centreline of the hull, and the Novatug patented Carrousel Towing System installed on the main deck. This unique combination of propulsion and towing arrangements results in inherently safer towing and escort operations, with enhanced maneuvrability for operations in confined waterways and other generally tight spaces.

Robert Allan Sign Tugboat Design Contracts in Netherlands
Robert Allan Ltd informs of the signing of two contracts during a recent Canadian Trade Mission to the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The first signing covered the new ART 80-32, designed by Robert Allan Ltd. and incorporating a hybrid propulsion system developed by Aspin Kemp & Associates (AKA). The vessels are under construction at the Damen Shipyard in Poland and will enter the KOTUG fleet later this year. The second signing covered the recently awarded contract for three offshore Rotor tugs, destined for service at the Shell “Prelude” FLNG facility off the coast of Northern Western Australia.
Ningbo Port Orders New Dual-fuel Tug
Robert Allan Ltd. On October 21, Robert Allan Ltd. was awarded a contract by Ningbo Port Company Ltd. in China for a RAstar 4200-DF Class dual-fuel (LNG-MDO) tug. The award of this contract builds on a history of collaboration between the two companies on several series of tug designs, dating back to 2004, and includes multiple series of 32- to 39-meter-long tugs (4,800 to 7,200 horsepower), including the recent Yong Gang Tuo 31. Pelindo III to Receive 15 Tugs in Indonesia
In early 2015, Robert Allan Ltd., Naval Architects of Vancouver, Canada was awarded a contract to provide four customized versions of its distinctive RAzer series designs of ASD tugboats to the Indonesia Port Corporation, “PT Pelabuhan Indonesia III (PERSERO)”, commonly known as Pelindo III. While Robert Allan Ltd. had long been very active in the Asian market, these designs were its first directly for a company from Indonesia, a country estimated to employ more than 2,000 tug boats.

On April 26, 2016, Cheoy Lee Shipyards launched the 100th vessel it has built to a Robert Allan Ltd. design, becoming the second shipyard worldwide to do so, after Sanmar’s initial achievement of this milestone in 2013. This epic tug, Hull Number 5098 at Cheoy Lee, is a RAstar 3200 class ASD tug, with completion expected in August, 2016. Reeve's Joins Robert Allan Ltd
Robert Allan Ltd. announced that Henry Reeve, P.E. (BASc, UBC Mech 95, Masters, NA and Offshore Engineering, Berkley ’97) has joined Robert Allan Ltd. as a Senior Naval Architect. Reeve’s areas of expertise include hydrodynamics and motions, mooring, resistance predictions, stability (ship and offshore), model testing, CFD analysis, regulatory and classification issues, and vessel survey. He has worked on the naval architecture aspects of CNG and LNG Terminals and Ships, SWATHs, Ro-Ro Ferries, MODU’s, FPSOs and FSOs, SPARs, TLPs and Offshore Current Turbines.

Robert Allan Ltd. announced that a long-planned re-structuring of the company has just been completed. Effective July 2008, Robert G. Allan has been appointed as Executive Chairman of the Board and remains at the helm. A core group of senior employees have become shareholders of Robert Allan Ltd., and will become increasingly involved in the company business. Robert Allan Ltd. The new organization will establish the culture of employee ownership and facilitate the succession from generation to generation. Assuming the position of President will be Ken Harford, P. Eng., who has been a key figure in the company for the past twenty years, most recently as Vice-President of Marine Engineering.
BRAtt, Green Training Tugs
Robert Allan Ltd., Western Maritime Institute, and Corvus Energy Limited announced that a contract will be signed for the design and construction of the world's first "green" training tugs at the International Tug & Salvage (ITS 2010) Conference, to be held in Vancouver in May 2010. Western Maritime Institute (WMI) is an accredited marine training institute located near Ladysmith on Vancouver Island, providing a wide range of operational and safety training courses for marine personnel at all levels.
Damen to Build Robert Allan Designed Rotor Tugs
Two new ART 80-32class Rotor tugs, the first vessels designed for KST B.V. under the recent agreement naming Robert Allan Ltd. as the exclusive designer of Rotor tugs, are to be built by the Damen Shipyards group for owners Elizabeth Ltd. This is the first time that the Damen Group will build a design from Robert Allan Ltd. Kotug has provided significant input into the requirements for this design, and Robert Allan Ltd., has developed a unique, customized design optimized for their operations.
BV Accepts Standardized CFD Predictions
Bureau Veritas (BV) has authorized on an “Approval in Principle” basis a new Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)-based performance prediction methodology developed by Robert Allan Ltd. as the basis for formally granting the service notation Escort Tug. While previously some classification societies have approved computer-based escort predictions for new tugs on a case by case basis, the majority still require a full-scale trial before issuing an escort notation and the associated escort numeral.

New RAmparts 2400W Tug Chincha Launched
A new ASD tug designed by Robert Allan Ltd. was launched on April 26, 2016 in Jiangsu Province, China for its Peruvian owners. Based on Robert Allan Ltd.’s RAmparts 2400W class, the Chincha was built by Jiangsu Wuxi Shipyard and fully customized to meet her owner’s requirements. Chincha is the first of two RAmparts 2400W tugs to be built for the growing Peruvian maritime and port operations company, Trabajos Marítimos S.A. (Tramarsa). Tramarsa has been in business since 1990 and operated harbor tugs built to Robert Allan Ltd. designs since 2000.
Chinese yards to Deliver RAmparts Tugs
Robert Allan Ltd. has been hard at work in the Chinese market for the last few years, not only for various shipyard clients, but also for local owners. In addition to major international ports in China such as the Ports of Ningbo, Tianjin, Shanghai and Shenzhen, recent progress has been made on a regional level at the deep-water Port of Cao Fei Dian in northern China’s Bohai Bay in Hebei Province. Cao Fei Dian Port, with an annual cargo capacity over 100 million tonnes, will soon take delivery of its first Robert Allan Ltd.
Tugboat Design Contract for Robert Allan Ltd.
Robert Allan Ltd is designing a new ART 80-32 Rotor®tug for Elizabeth Ltd charter to Kotug. This newly designed harbor tug will be chartered by Kotug, the Rotterdam, Hamburg and Bremerhaven based tugboat operator. The Rotor®tugs are 32 meters long and have a bollard pull of minimum 80 tons over the stern and the bow. It is the intention of Elizabeth Ltd to place a new building order for 4 of these tugs. At this stage it is not revealed where the Rotor®tugs will be deployed. The new design is a direct result of the co-operation between Robert Allan Ltd and Rotor®tug.
Oben Naki Heads to Canada
Emphasising the close working relationship which exists between naval architects Robert Allan Ltd and Turkish shipbuilders Sanmar Ltd, Sanmar's Oben Naki has relocated to Vancouver BC to join the Canadian designers as contracts manager (Turkey). Naki joined Sanmar Shipyards in 2007 immediately on qualifying as a naval architect and marine engineer. He has since gone on to obtain an MBA at Yeditepe University in Istanbul, Turkey’s leading educational establishment. Sanmar has currently constructed some 120 tugs of various sizes and power to Robert Allan designs.
RAL, Ausenco Sandwell Team for CG Bid
One of Canada’s most storied naval architecture firms, Robert Allan Ltd., and Canada’s leading arctic and offshore engineering firm, Ausenco Sandwell, formed a joint venture -— Canada’s Arctic SAGE Team -— to bid for the design of the Canadian Coast Guard’s new flagship icebreaker. “Canada’s Arctic SAGE Team brings together the most experienced, skilled and talented team in the world on ice breaker technology,” says Robert Allan Ltd.’s Executive Chairman, Rob Allan. Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced the new icebreaker project in August of 2008. The ship, to be named CCGS John G. Diefenbaker, will replace CCGS Louis S. St-Laurent. In 2005, Robert Allan Ltd will celebrate its 75th year of continuous business as a firm of Consulting Naval Architects. From its base in Vancouver, the company serves the international marine community with a wide range of specialized workboat designs, as it has done since its inception, through three generations of family ownership.
