Esvagt Eyes Offshore Wind with New Hire

Esvagt, provider of emergency rescue and response vessels and related services to the offshore energy industry, said it has appointed a new head of business development to lead a push into new services, including in offshore wind.The Danish vessel operator announced the appointment of Flemming Hjorth as Head of Business Development, New Services, the focus on business development will be even more concentrated. Damen Shiprepair Dunkerque Completes Project

Damen Shiprepair Dunkerque (DSDu) has completed an eight-day refurbishment project for the 132-metre DP2, self-propelled, jack-up vessel Sea Installer. Operated by A2SEA, which was purchased in 2017 by DEME’s subsidiary GeoSea, Sea Installer was purpose-built in 2012 for installing the next generation of large wind turbines off the coast of Europe. The primary task was the fitting of new spud can shoes to the vessel’s four columnar legs. These massive pieces of steelwork, weighing 160 tonnes each, required the deployment of specialist logistics including the use of self-propelled modular transporters to move them into position and a 700-tonne crawler crane. While Sea Installer was in the drydock at DSDu, the client also took the opportunity to prepare her for the next contract.

Wind Energy Workboats: A US Offshore Build-up

Block Island — U.S.-based Deepwater Wind’s five-turbine, 30-megawatt wind park — was the first. It showed what was possible, what might not have been optimal and how long it all takes. Since then, incentives for onshore-wind have been curbed, while a tax credit for offshore wind has been extended. Wind parks are in the works. States have power companies buying offshore wind energy, and experienced offshore operators are hiring the new wind-service vessels from elements of their oil-and-gas supply chain. The Jones Act, too, is being overcome by fleet owners and designers joining the U.S.

Cammell Laird: Polar Ship Contract to Kick-start Exports

British shipyard and engineering company Cammell Laird said it plans to unleash an “aggressive exports drive” in 2017 after one of its busiest years for commercial marine work, which saw it land the biggest shipbuilding project in the U.K. for a generation. Cammell Laird CEO John Syvret said the winning of the £150 million contract to build the Sir David Attenborough polar research vessel for the U.K. Government “threw open” a new global market to build a range of high value polar vessels from research to cruise ships.

Sea Installer Receives Crane Upgrade

A2SEA Wins Hornsea One Contract

From spring 2019, A2SEA will play a key role in building the world’s largest ever offshore wind farm, Hornsea Project One for DONG Energy. Capacity will be 1.2GW. A2SEA will deploy its purpose-built offshore installation vessel Sea Installer to install a part of the 174 Siemens 7MW turbines. ”It is a great pleasure and with pride that we can inform that A2SEA has signed a contract to in-stall turbines at what will become the world’s largest offshore wind farm, Hornsea Project One," says Jens Frederik Hansen, CEO at A2SEA. The Hornsea Project One OWF will be located 120km off the Yorkshire Coast, covering approx. 407 square kilometres. When fully commissioned, the 1.2GW offshore wind farm will provide green energy for well over 1 million homes in the UK.

Crane Upgrade for Jack-up Vessel Sea Installer

Damen Shiprepair Amsterdam (DSAm), part of Damen Shiprepair & Conversion, is currently undertaking a modification and maintenance project on the jack-up vessel Sea Installer. In what is a multidisciplinary project, the yard’s primary focus will be to upgrade the vessel’s main crane. With its increased lifting capacity, the 132-meter A2SEA-owned vessel, which is used chiefly for offshore wind farm installation purposes, will be able to take on a broader scope of work as offshore wind activities involve heavier and larger components.

Xervo Offers Boat-in-a-Box for Commercial Shipping

Lifeboat producer Xervo has now reimagined and redeveloped its Boat-In-A-Box concept to match the needs of the commercial shipping business, and has already landed its first commercial shipping order for delivery in Q2 2016. The new lifeboat combines Xervo’s well-known safety concept with a compact design that offers better space utilization, lower service and maintenance costs, and a better lifetime value than existing solutions on the market. The Danish lifeboat producer Xervo said it has been very successful in recent years with its Boat-In-A-Box lifeboat for offshore projects, in particular jack-up rigs in the Norwegian market. Last year the company launched a SOLAS-version of the lifeboat for rig systems, and that variant has now been further developed for use in commercial shipping.

A2SEA Jack-Up Capsizes Off Denmark

A2SEA has announced that wind turbine installation vessel has capsized off the Danish coast due to harsh weather on Wednesday. It has gone from bad to worse for A2SEA-vessel Sea Worker. A week ago, jumped tethers during a towing of the 1,800-ton jack-up barge from Frederikshavn to Esbjerg, which meant that the crew had to be evacuated and the barge run aground. But the night of Wednesday got violent storm on the West Coast vessel to capsize, and now there are fears of a major oil leak. Sea Worker will be removed as soon as the weather allows. A special operations team and vessels ESVAGT CONNECTOR and EMILE ROBIN are onsite closely following the situation. Moreover, environmental vessel GUNNAR SEIDENFADEN is on call in the Port of Hvide Sande ready to respond if any development occurs.

A2SEA Signs for Dudgeon

Dudgeon Offshore Wind Limited has awarded the Charter for WTG transport and installation to A2SEA A/S. A2SEA shall provide the jack-up vessel Sea Installer including 24/7 marine crew and crane operators for transport and installation of the 67 Siemens 6.0-154 wind turbine generators (WTG). The charter covers project management, and design, procurement and installation of necessary sea fastening and grillage for the work. Fire Aboard Wind Farm OSV Extinguished

A fire broke out in the engine room of the offshore support vessel (OSV) 'Sea Gale' while in the vicinity of the wind farm Meer Wind, 15 miles north of Heligoland, according to Maritime Denmark. The blaze began in the engine room and spread to the exhaust system on the 24 -meter-long vessel owned by A2SEA,  which had three crew members on board. In addition to the multipurpose vessel Mellum, the warships Hamburg and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern were involved in the fire fight. The tanker Spessart remained on stand-by to help the crew of the Sea Gale. Two of the three fires were extinguished by the crew along with a joint team from the other ships. The third fire was extinguished with foam from a team of specially trained firefighters.

EIVA System Leads the Way for A2SEA Jack-ups

This October, the Danish offshore engineering specialist EIVA came one Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) closer to fulfilling the delivery of a complete jack-up positioning system solution for A2SEA. The system will be installed on a vessel designed to operate under demanding conditions and is part of a $155 million contract. EIVA has successfully completed the FAT of the second of two complete navigation and leg penetration/barge displacement monitoring system solutions to be delivered to A2SEA, an installation and service provider for offshore wind farms.

Help for Jack-up Companies to Meet Code of Practice

The International Jack Up Barge Owners Association (IJUBOA) established its Code of Practice last year, providing a standard against which companies can be audited. It is based on the International Safety Management (ISM) code. After a successful audit, companies get a “Certificate of Conformity” similar to the ISM “Document of Compliance.”  A major change to current practice for those operating small barges is that the code requires companies to appoint a Designated Person Ashore to bring all operators in line with those already complying with ISM.

Shipdock Lands Jack-Up Upgrade Contracts

Secret weapon’: dedicated on site steel construction and machining facility. The skyline of the Amsterdam harbours has been visibly altered in the neighbourhood of Shipdock, Amsterdam’s premier ship repair and conversion yard. The company has recently secured four major contracts for the upgrading and maintenance of the jack-up vessels GMS Endurance, GMS Endeavour, Seajack Leviathan and Seajack Zaratan. These vessels, equipped with elevating legs of over 100m in height, will be keeping the shipyard busy throughout the summer months.

Wind Power Seen Surging as Custom Barges Cut Cost

Offshore wind-power producers from Dong Energy A/S to RWE AG are building custom ships at record rates to reduce the cost of the technology which is  three times as pricey as electricity from coal plants. As many as 20 vessels, some with movable legs which reach the seafloor, will come onto the market in the next few years, reducing chartering costs of as much as 200,000 euros ($261,000) a day, said Marc Seidel, an offshore engineer at Suzlon Energy Ltd., which supplies turbines to Germany’s RWE. A lack of specialized installation ships has forced companies to hire barges designed for oil exploration, holding up work at projects such as EON AG’s Robin Rigg wind farm off Scotland’s western coast.

Teekay, A2SEA to Develop Windfarm Installation Vessel

Teekay Corporation TK +0.42% (Teekay) today announced it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with A2SEA A/S (A2SEA) to jointly develop an innovative vessel design for the installation of offshore wind foundations. A2SEA is a leading service provider to the offshore wind sector. The MOU encompasses the key terms of cooperation between Teekay and A2SEA for the design, delivery and operation of floating transportation and installation vessels for offshore windfarm foundations for deepwater locations and harsh weather conditions, and which meet the requirements of expected future offshore windfarm foundation concepts, such as tripods and jackets.

High-Performance Inline Thruster for Jackup Vessel

A 430 ft long, 128 ft wide jackup vessel for the erection of wind power stations is being fitted with the currently most powerful Inline Thruster from Voith Turbo Advanced Propeller Technologies. The Inline Thruster is rated at 1,500 kW and has an inner propeller diameter of 2,300 millimeters. Voith is systematically expanding its Thruster series. The Voith Inline Thruster/Voith Inline Propulsor (VIT/VIP) series starts with type 240-10, which means: an inner propeller diameter of 240 millimeters at an output of 10 kW. Previously, the VIT/VIP 850-300 was the most powerful unit in this class.

Sea Jack Reserved for Thanet Offshore Wind Project

Thanet Offshore Wind Limited (TOW) has signed a Reservation Agreement with A2SEA A/S for the long term use of the vessel the SEA JACK for the main construction periods for the Thanet project. Starting in autumn 2008 the Sea Jack will be used to install the wind turbine foundations and will then continue with the erection of the turbines in the summer and autumn of 2009. Sea Jack was specifically built to service the growing offshore wind market. At over 90 metres long, 33 metres beam and with a powerful Manitowoc M1200 Ringer crane, the barge is an ideal platform for large scale offshore wind projects such as Thanet. Thanet received all of the consents required to construct and operate the scheme in December 2006, the first UK Round 2 project to achieve this milestone.
