Keel Laid for Finnlines’ Second Hybrid RoRo Ship

The Nanjing Jinling shipyard in China has laid the keel for the second of three new hybrid ro-ro vessels it is building for Finnlines.The construction of MS Finneco II is proceeding, and the keel laying ceremony was held on May 12, Finnlines said.The vessel is part of Finnlines’ €500 million ($607 million) newbuilding program which includes two eco-sustainable ro-pax vessels in addition to the three hybrid ro-ro vessels.“Finnlines has made major investments in renewing and developing its fleet into more sustainable, using the latest technologies and green innovations available.

Finnlines' First New Hybrid RoRo Launched

Finnlines’ first of three new hybrid ro-ro vessels was launched at the Nanjing Jinling Shipyard in China on Monday. The vessel, Finneco I, will start sailing on the Finnish shipping company’s Biscay–North Sea–Baltic Sea service at the turn of the year. The series’ second and third vessels, Finneco II and Finneco III, will be delivered in 2022.The new vessels are 238 meters long with a cargo capacity of 5,800 lane meters. Additionally, car decks have a capacity of 5,800 square meters and about 520 TEU on the weather deck.

Wärtsilä to Test Marine Scrubbers for Carbon Capture

Wärtsilä Helps Siem Offshore Cut Emissions, Fuel Consumption

Norwegian offshore vessel operator Siem Offshore has tapped Finnish maritime technology firm Wärtsilä to help it cut emissions and fuel consumption aboard two well intervention vessels.The two vessels, the Siem Helix 1 and Siem Helix 2, each operate with eight Wärtsilä 32 engines. Ship Power: Out of the Past Comes Wärtsilä's Engine of the Future

The new two-stroke gas engine design was developed within Wärtsilä’s global R&D function. The design was carried out jointly at Winterthur, Switzerland and Vaasa, Finland. The Wärtsilä engine laboratory located in Trieste in Italy was the site for test installation as it has gas supplies.

Although the well-known Finnish company Wärtsilä has a very long history, it was founded in 1834, the diesel engine era begins when the company signs a license agreement with Friedrich Krupp Germania Werft AG in Germany. The first diesel engine sees the light of day in Turku in November 1942. From there on Wärtsilä passed a number of rapid expansions in all fields of products. Some of the products stayed and some disappeared. The concentration of being a full solution provider for the maritime industry started in the early 2000’s after lots of talks with potential customers worldwide.

Implications on U.S. The next round of emission regulations will bring significant impacts to the design, construction, and operation of U.S. commercial and government vessels starting in 2014. The impending EPA Tier 4 regulations directly apply to high and medium-speed diesel engines used in workboats, ferries, small cargo ships, and government vessels. These regulations represent the most significant reduction of marine emission levels to date, specifically in the form of nitrogen oxides (NOx). Natural gas fueled engines present one path to compliance, but not the only path.

Wärtsilä to Launch Dual-fuel Engine Series

Wärtsilä successfully conducted full scale testing on gas of its low-speed two-stroke dual-fuel engine and is now introducing a full new range of engines based on its established and well-proven low pressure technology. The first engine utilizing this technology, the Wärtsilä RT-flex50DF, will be available for delivery in the third quarter of 2014. Other engines from the company's new Generation X series will follow and will be available for delivery during 2015 and 2016. The entire portfolio of Wärtsilä two-stroke engines will be available as low pressure dual-fuel (DF) versions.

INTERTANKO Praises Action by IMO Secretary General

INTERTANKO applauds IMO Secretary General Mitropoulos’s initiative to propose to the IMO Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) a study group which, he stressed, will ensure that a decision on the revision of Annex VI keeps on track to meet the implementation target date of 2010. At the same time the Association welcomes the action at the IMO’s Bulk Liquids and Gas (BLG) Sub-committee this week to retain marine distillates as a viable option in the revisions to MARPOL Annex VI,. “The Secretary General’s initiative will maintain the target deadline for the revision of MARPOL Annex VI and assist in keeping in check European and U.S. threats to take unilateral action to reduce harmful air pollution”, says INTERTANKO Managing Director Dr Peter Swift.
