Grove Appointed ABS Americas President

ABS has named Todd Grove President of its ABS Americas Division effective May 1, 2004. He will replace Robert E. Kramek who, as previously announced, will assume the role of President and Chief Operating Officer of ABS at that time. Grove currently serves as Vice President Western Region, ABS Europe. In his new role he will be located at the Americas’ Division headquarters in Houston, Texas. He will have operational responsibility for all ABS classification activity in North, Central and South America.

ABS Announces Executive Appointments

The ABS Board of Directors announces executive appointments. Effective January 1, 2002 the following staff will assume new leadership positions: Robert J. Bauerle, Senior Vice President & Chief Financial Officer; Gary A. Latin, Senior Vice President & Chief Information Officer; Dr. Donald Liu, Executive Vice President & Chief Technology Officer; and Vincent F. ABS promoted James C. Card to Senior Vice President, Technology. Card will assume the overall management responsibilities of ABS' global technology and research team. The board also approved the election of William J. Sember to a new corporate officer position of Vice President, Offshore Development. Sember is currently serving as Vice President Technology & Business Development, ABS Europe. Texas.

Industry Leaders Elected To ABS Membership

Sixty-Nine prominent shipping industry executives have been elected as new members of ABS. In addition, Rear Admiral David L. Brewer III, Commander, Military Sealift Command, U.S. Navy, was appointed as a member. This brings the ABS worldwide membership to 803. The members, each eminent in their maritime field of endeavor, provide broad governance and oversight of ABS. ABS Is Authorized By USCG

The U.S. Coast Guard has authorized ABS to act on its behalf to issue the Document of Compliance (DOC) for U.S.-flag vessels transporting dangerous goods under SOLAS 74. ABS will hold technical reviews and confirm compliance of these vessels to the statutory requirements. The relationship between the USCG and ABS is demonstrated by the Alternative Compliance Program (ACP) jointly developed with the USCG that allows ABS to perform work historically conducted by the regulatory body. With ABS authorized to issue the dangerous goods DOC under SOLAS, 74, and review responsibilities under ACP, U.S.-flag operators in the international arena are experiencing a reduction in the regulatory burden placed upon them without compromising safety.

Sember Appointed ABS VP For Offshore Development

William J. Sember has been appointed vice president offshore development for ABS. Currently, Sember serves as vice president technology & business development, ABS Europe. He will relocate to ABS Worldwide Headquarters in Houston, Texas and assume the new responsibilities effective January 1, 2002. During his 26-year career at ABS, Sember has held a succession of senior positions after starting as a field surveyor, including head of the offshore engineering department and vice president of operations for the eastern region of ABS Europe.
