SAIC Tsunami Buoy System for Russian Federation

Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) (NYSE: SAI) announced it has been awarded a contract for the production and delivery of an SAIC Tsunami Buoy (STB) system by the Far Eastern Ecological Center, Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, for the Far Eastern Regional Hydrometeorological Research Institute (FERHRI), Vladivostok, Russian Federation. The STB system will be one of the key sensors monitored by the Tsunami Warning Center in the Russian Far East, and will serve as the ocean segment of the Russian Federation tsunami warning system network currently in development.

BAE Systems Launches Talisman Autonomous Underwater System

BAE Systems launched its new autonomous unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV) Talisman at Oceanology International 2006. The Talisman System, developed by BAE Systems in the UK, is a latest-generation modular multi-role UUV, capable of a wide range of maritime littoral operations. Fully-funded by BAE Systems' private venture funding, the Talisman program was launched in late 2004, going from paper to initial trials within less than a year. The program is part of BAE Systems' strategy to build up an integrated approach to unmanned vehicles and autonomous systems, leading to the development of Intelligent Autonomy which can be applied across all sectors.

Mini Robosub Joins the U.S. Navy

The U.S. Navy has tested an unmanned undersea vehicle (UUV), operating from a submerged nuclear attack submarine (SSN). The UUV is the AN/BLQ-11 long-term mine reconnaissance system (LMRS), which contains sonars that enable it to search for naval mines, or anything else. In effect the LMRS can scout ahead for the SSN, or simply search an area. The LMRS is about the size of a torpedo, and is launched and recovered via a torpedo tube. The LMRS can operate for 40 hours, and up to 135 (eventually over 200) kilometers from the submarine. Cruising speed is about 7 kilometers an hour, with a top speed of 12 kilometers an hour. It can operate from ten to 200 feet beneath the surface.
