Two from PSG Take Roles with Standards Groups

Two Pure Safety Group leaders have taken on roles with industry standards organizations.Mathew Moreau, product manager of dropped tools and FME at Pure Safety Group (PSG), has been named chairperson of the International Safety Equipment Association (ISEA) Standards Committee for Dropped Objects Solutions. The committee is the first ever to focus exclusively on preventing dropped object hazards in general industry, construction and other sectors that involve work at height. In 2018, the committee set the first U.S.

Mitigation of Shock & Vibration on Fast Boats

For some time now, military agencies and specialist organizations around the globe have driven the evolution of high speed watercraft. As a trickle-down effect fast response craft now serve roles once typically serviced by displacement designs including pilot boats, dive boats, crew boats and offshore support. During high speed operations the repeated shocks (RS) and whole body vibrations (WBV) of this harsh environment are transmitted to the passengers, operators and crew aboard, creating avenues of owner liability if not addressed.

Exhaust Gas Cleaner Introduced by Northern Lights

Northern Lights provides soot & particulate matter removal solution for diesel engine exhausts with DECS. DECS, or Diesel Exhaust Cleaning System, is based on DCL International’s MARINE-X™ system which removes particulates as they are emitted from the engine. Air and water quality in and around the vessel are thereby vastly improved. When equipped with DECS, exhaust gas is routed through a catalytically coated ceramic filter. Soot is trapped and the filter is kept free of restrictions. DECS uses a passive regeneration process. Unlike competitors’ active systems which require additional equipment and regeneration time, with DECS, the Northern Lights generator set functions as normal while particulate matter is continually burned off using the heat emitted by the engine’s own exhaust.

Austal USA: Corrosion Management Solution

Austal USA and their U.S. Navy partners have worked closely to achieve a comprehensive corrosion management solution for the Independence-variant Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) class. Impressed current cathodic protection systems, already in place on the Westpac Express, an Austal-built civilian vessel that has served the U.S. Marine Corps for the past decade, are set to be tested over the coming months on the Independence-variant Littoral Combat Ships and ultimately, put into place on the Jackson (LCS 6). Passive measures are important as well, and the Coronado (LCS 4) will get new anti-corrosion surface treatments to better protect the water jet tunnels and associated structure from galvanic corrosion.

MTU Works to Quiet Engine Noise

The active mountings are based on the noise-cancellation principle: they create sound waves with the same amplitude and the opposite polarity to the original structure-borne waves of the engine. In this way, noise and anti-noise cancel each other out to a large extent.

The Tognum subsidiary MTU Friedrichshafen signed a contract on the exclusive distribution of active engine mountings with the companies Paulstra and Stop-Choc. The jointly developed system, which MTU has trialed on test benches and in ships, reduces the structure-borne noise emitted by diesel engines. This innovative concept of active mountings has been developed through to product maturity for yachts and naval ships. With this cooperation, MTU Friedrichshafen is expanding its core competencies in the system business.
