Middle East Port of Aden Invites Consultancy Bids

The Ministry of Transport and Yemen Gulf of Aden Ports Corporation (Port of Aden) invites  qualified consultants companies/firms to express their interest in participation by putting forward their names with the necessary documents to confirm their competence. Aden is described as “Yemen’s Gateway to the World”. To handle the world’s largest container vessels, the Aden Container Terminal (ACT) at the North Shore of Aden’s Inner Harbour was designed and built. This facility was commissioned in March 1999 and provides the port with world-class container handling facilities. ACT’s throughput reached 500,000 TEU’s/year in 2008 and is forecast to grow significantly in future.

Aden’s Fifth SPP Crane Delivered

Delivery of the fifth Super Post Panamax (SPP) Reggiane Crane on February 24th to the Port of Aden emphasizes its policy of phased expansion of container handling services to meet increasing demand. This additional crane, with the same 55m outreach as the first four delivered in 1999, will allow the Aden Container Terminal (ACT) to handle over 500,000 TEU, a figure that it soon expects to reach. Yard operations were expanded in 2001 by delivery of additional five RTG’s plus tractors and trailer units. Aden has maintained an average annual container volume growth rate of over 40 percent during the past 9 years. Volume has risen from 121,600 TEU when the ACT opened in 1999 to over 377,000 in 2001, above 50 percent each year.

Port of Aden Takes Delivery of New Tug

The Yemen Port Authority fleet at Aden have taken delivery of bollard pull Tug “Wadi Hassan” built by Damen Shipyard in The Netherlands. Each of the Azimuth Stern Drive (ASD) tugs has two propellers that can rotate through 360 degrees to give tremendous manoeuvring ability ahead, astern and sideways. This tug, and her sister vessel “Wadi Hateeb” due to complete trials in Holland next week, are an important addition to Aden’s towing capacity. The numbers of tankers, bulk carriers, container ships and other vessels calling at the port has more than doubled since 1995 and the total tonnage of ships calling has trebled over the same time. Towage capacity was becoming a limiting factor at the port.
