New China-Europe Intermodal Route Opened

Marking the opening of a new China-Europe freight train route a freight train left Xi'an, capital of northwest China's Shaanxi Province, heading for Bishkek, capital of Kyrgyzstan.According to a report in Xinhua, the train consists of 42 containers loaded with laptops, LED panels, green tea and other products manufactured in Hunan province.With this service, Zhuzhou has become the third city in Hunan Province to open international freight train route to Europe after Changsha and Huaihua.The train will leave China through the Horgos Pass in Xinjiang and pass Kazakhstan before reaching its destination.The whole trip will take seven days…

Shanghai to Spend $740 million on Cruise Ship Park

A Shanghai district government plans to spend about 5 billion yuan ($739.97 million) to develop a cruise ship industrial park to house foreign firms that it hopes will help build China's first luxury passenger vessels, a local official said. China's government has earmarked cruise shipbuilding as a major objective in its "Made in China 2025" programme to upgrade its manufacturing and support jobs at its shipyards, as domestic demand for cruise trips increases 30 percent a year. Firms who set up shop in the new zone could expect financing support from banks and recently established government funds, Lei Shuguang, director on the administrative committee of Shanghai Baoshan Industrial Zone, told Reuters on Wednesday.

IEEE OES Presents Awards at Oceans '11

IEEE OES announced its annual award recipients at OCEANS ’11. The conference was held September 19-22 in beautiful Kona Hawaii. Both awards were presented at the Awards Luncheon held on Tuesday, September 20th. The Distinguished Technical Achievement Award recipient Christopher von Alt was recognized for his significant accomplishments in oceanic engineering. He is a leader in the development and use of autonomous underwater vehicles in oceanography, underwater acoustics, and ocean engineering. The Distinguished Service Award recipient James T. Barbera was honored for outstanding contributions towards the objectives of the Oceanic Engineering Society. He has been active in the management of  IEEE OES for many years serving on the Administrative Committee for twelve of those years.

Vacon Inaugurates New Factory In China

The global AC drives manufacturer Vacon inaugurated their new factory in Suzhou on 11 May 2011. Present at the inauguration ceremony were Consul General of Finland in Shanghai Mr Matti Heimonen, Vice Chairman of Suzhou Industrial Park Administrative Committee Ms Sun Yanyan, members of Vacon's Board of Directors and management team, and Vacon partners from the Asia-Pacific region. Built to meet the company's growth targets, the new factory occupies a total area of 24,000 square meters. The new plant also has a R&D lab and the after-sales service center for the Asia-Pacific region. At the ceremony, Mr Jan Inborr, Chairman of Vacon's Board of Directors, and Mr Pertti Rajamäki, Managing Director of Vacon's subsidiary in China, outlined Vacon's future prospects.
