US Trade Deficit Narrows for First Time in Six Years

© Mariakray / Adobe Stock

The U.S. trade deficit fell for the first time in six years in 2019 as the White House’s trade war with China curbed the import bill, keeping the economy on a moderate growth path despite a slowdown in consumer spending and weak business investment. The report from the Commerce Department on Wednesday also showed the Trump administration’s “America First” agenda decreased the flow of goods last year, with exports posting their first decline since 2016. President Donald Trump, who has dubbed himself “the tariff man…

e-Navigation Passage Planning transformation

Passage planning. Two words sure to elicit a groan from any navigator anywhere in the world. The vital, yet incredibly frustrating, process of developing a complete description of a vessel's voyage from start to finish, berth to berth, is an administrative burden. On average, each vessel, for each journey, uses 3.5 hours of officer time to collate a plan – manually adding elements such as ENC cells, journey waypoints and UKC calculations to a report for inspection by port state authorities and other relevant organizations. It’s a laborious task and…

LNG Prices Rise as South Korea to Wrap Up Major Tender Award

Asian spot liquefied natural gas (LNG) prices rose this week as strong expected demand from South Korea added to appetite from India and Taiwan, while supply from the United States was slow to return from maintenance. The price of LNG for December delivery was $6.95 per million British thermal units (mmBtu), up around 15 cents from a week earlier. Attention was on a tender by Korea Gas Corp which has by all accounts exceeded its initial scope and drawn bids by 25 companies offering to supply around 50 cargoes in total - even though it only advertised demand for four shipments. In reality, though, Korea Gas Corp is expected to purchase up to 15 or more cargoes to cover strong winter needs as nuclear outages and low LNG stocks prompt a buying spree.

Remote Control Boat Assists Flood Repair

A remote control boat equipped with a SonTek M9 Acoustic Doppler Profiler (ADP) has been employed with HydroSurveyor software to create a three-dimensional map of a damaged (and still submerged) flood barrier, following serious damage that took place during last December’s storms. Data from the survey enabled the Environment Agency to act swiftly and effectively to repair the damage and thereby protect local industry and residents. Extreme weather conditions and the highest tide for 150 years resulted in serious damage to a flood bank at Seal Sands near Billingham in the North East of England.

Feature: Aluminum Boats Prove Their Mettle

Technology, The Aluminum Association, Inc. Aluminum has been used in the marine industry for more than 100 years because of its light weight and ease of fabrication combined with good corrosion and fatigue resistance. However, for much of the past 30 years, fiberglass has been the material of choice of North American boatbuilders, particularly for higher-volume production lines. Competitively priced compared with boats made from most other materials, fiberglass boats can also be made from standardized molds that reduce their construction time and labor. Aluminum alloys, which are specified for marine use, offer many benefits, though, too.

The Electronics Revolution in the Pilothouse

Back in 1986 when I first started reporting on workboats, the most modern thing in the pilothouse may have been the coffee maker. Navigation was mostly "between the sticks" and via compass and communication was mostly VHF. Today's vessels, especially those working offshore, have a myriad of electronic devices that make the job easier, more precise and most importantly, safer. The new series of 10 supply boats being built by Bender Shipbuilding & Repair, Mobile, Ala. for Rigdon Marine, Houston, Texas are good cases in point. The 210-ft. by 54-ft. vessels are models of efficiency, load carrying capacity and performance. The electronics necessary to keep this sophisticated ship running at peak performance is truly staggering.
