LR Grants AIP for Samsung Heavy Industries’ Advanced Systems

Lloyd’s Register (LR) has awarded approval in principle (AIP) to Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) for its Samsung Autonomous Ship (SAS) Autonomous Navigation System and SVESSEL Communication System, a key result of a joint development project formed in early 2023. Wärtsilä’s Cargo Handling and LPG Fuel Supply Systems for Exmar Gas Carriers

Wärtsilä will deliver its cargo handling and LPG fuel supply systems for two LPG/Midsize gas carrier vessels being built at Hyundai Mipo Dockyard in South Korea for EXMAR LPG.EXMAR LPG is a joint venture between EXMAR, a maritime and offshore solutions provider and Seapeak. According to Wärtsilä, the 46,000 m3 capacity vessels will be the largest of their kind in the world, and there is an option for two additional ships as well. Singapore's Keppel Offshore & Marine said Thursday it had completed work on the Maju 510 tug, its first autonomous vessel project."Capable of autonomous vessel navigation as well as collision detection and avoidance (CDCA), the Maju 510 tug, owned and operated by Keppel Smit Towage, is the first vessel in the world to receive the Autonomous Notation from ABS classification society," Keppel O&M said.According to Keppel O&M, the tug is the first in South Asia that can be remotely operated by joystick control.

Following the delivery of the expedition cruise vessel Hondius in 2019, Oceanwide Expeditions ordered a second vessel from Croatian shipyard Brodosplit, due for delivery by the end of 2021.Hondius and the new sister vessel Janssonius are said to be the first vessels in the world to be built according to the LR PC6 class, which meets the latest Lloyd’s Register requirements for Polar Class 6 vessels.SCHOTTEL, which offers a series of ice-strengthened propulsion systems, said it has been selected again to supply highly reliable main and auxiliary propulsion units.

Automatic Ferry Enters Regular Service in Norway

Singapore Launches Autonomous Tug Project

Singapore yard Keppel Offshore & Marine (Keppel O&M) said that its wholly-owned subsidiary Keppel Singmarine will develop an autonomous tug that will be operated by Keppel Smit Towage.The tug is expected to be one of Singapore’s first autonomous vessels when the project is completed in 4Q 2020.To develop the autonomous tug, Keppel O&M has secured a grant of up to S$2 million from the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) under its Maritime Innovation and Technology Fund (MINT FUND).This follows the Memorandum of Understanding signed by Keppel O&M, MPA and the Technology Centre for Offshore and Marine, Singapore (TCOMS) in April 2018 to jointly develop autonomous vessels for a variety of applications including undertaking harbour operations such as channelling…

India Commissions Second Landing Craft Utility Vessel

Indian Navy commissioned LCU L52 - a landing craft - which will be deployed for a variety of activities including transporting battle tanks and other heavy weapons systems. "Dr. Jagdish Mukhi, Lieutenant Governor, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, commissioned IN LCU L52 into the Indian Navy on 21 August 2017 at Port Blair. IN LCU L52 is the second Landing Craft Utility (LCU) Mk-IV class to be inducted into the Indian Navy," said a press release from the Navy. The ship has been indigenously designed and built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers, Kolkata. The commissioning of L-52 is yet another manifestation of the potential of the country’s indigenous design and ship building capability.

Elbit Bags Order to Supply Equipment to Brazil Marine Corps

Elbit Systems announced that it won a $40 million contract from the Brazilian Marines to supply advanced systems for computerization, electronic warfare, radio, and communications. The contract will be performed over a two-year period. The contract calls for the supply of cutting-edge technologies and operational capabilities, including a variety of Battle Management Systems (BMS) applications, C4I systems for artillery, latest generation of Soldier C4I suit as well as advanced EW capabilities. The systems will be deployed in fixed and deployed command centers and in vehicles/APCs and dismounted configurations, aiming to significantly enhance Marine Forces' operational effectiveness, and aligning the BMC with the most modern NCW (Network Centric Warfare) concept.

First LPG Carrier Order for MHI Shipbuilding

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., a group company of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI), announced it has received an order from Astomos Energy Corporation for a very large liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) carrier. The order marks the very first to be received by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Shipbuilding since the company's launch on October 1. The LPG carrier on order is identical to the four vessels Astomos Energy has already ordered to MHI since 2013. According to the builder, the ship will provide a high level of energy-saving performance, flexibility to accommodate major LPG terminals around the globe and specifications suited to passage through the newly expanding Panama Canal. Completion and delivery are scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2018.

Wärtsilä's' Propulsion for Use with US Compliant ELA

Wärtsilä has developed propulsion systems that are capable of operating with Environmentally Acceptable Lubricants (EALs) and comply with the US Vessel General Permit 2013 (VGP-2013). Wärtsilä is among the first marine propulsion solutions suppliers to achieve this compliance for complete propulsion packages. For vessels operating in US waters, VGP-2013 mandates the use of EALs in all oil-to-sea interfaces unless technically unfeasible. VGP-2013 was issued by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and is applicable to all vessels sailing in US coastal waters. Wärtsilä began work on developing an effective solution in 2013, working together with numerous EAL suppliers.
