Foss Maritime: Hard at Work in the Arctic

Glacier Wind in Cook Inlet (Image courtesy of Foss Maritime)

As the oil industry awaits a much-needed rebound, Foss Maritime’s robust presence in the Arctic region underscores its commitment to the region, the environment, and a business plan that looks ahead to the next chapter. Reports of the death of commercial Arctic activities have been greatly exaggerated. While Arctic energy projects have, by and large, been put on the back burner – like most things related to energy in other places – there are still many projects ongoing; and still others being planned.

Submarine Bidders Step up Lobbying for Australia Tender

Japan's advanced attack Soryu submarine carried out drills with Australia's navy on Tuesday as a German company launched a campaign to advertise its expertise - as a race for a A$50 billion contract to build Australia's next submarine fleet neared a climax. Industry sources told Reuters the Australian government is speeding up its decision on the contract - France is the other major bidder - with a winner now expected to be announced by the end of the month. Australia intends to buy 12 new submarines, a centrepiece of its defence strategy unveiled in February, which called for an increase in military spending of nearly A$30 billion over the next 10 years to protect strategic and trade interests in the Asia-Pacific.

Advertising Campaign To Fight Drilling Ban

A new organization composed of Louisiana businesses, organizations and individuals -- Gulf Citizens United (GCU) -- has been formed to raise a unified voice against the oil drilling moratorium on the Gulf Coast. GCU has mounted an advertising campaign on Capitol Hill aimed at lawmakers to underscore the severe economic consequences of the drilling ban proposed by the Obama Administration. Running several half-page ads in Capitol Hill publications the week of July 26, the GCU ad headline says, “The Ban on Offshore Drilling is a Ban on American Jobs!”  It notes a recent Bloomberg national poll that found 75% of Americans are opposed to the ban.

Expanded and Upgraded

Newpark Shipbuilding has increased its portfolio of businesses from one to six in the past 18 months, but don't expect this Houston-Galveston region company to rest on its laurels. More growth is expected and planned. Newpark Shipbuilding was formed in the early 1990s by Sam and Frank Eakin. The Eakins, with an investment banking background, saw opportunity in the Houston-Galveston area for consolidation amidst the fragmented shipbuilding industry. The Eakin's goal was a strong shipyard network. Less than a decade later, Newpark Shipbuilding has acquired enough yards to constitute what the company refers to as a "shipbuilding network." Altogether, six facilities have been acquired in the Houston-Galveston area, employing more than 1,200 people.
