The annual study analyzes reported shipping losses over 100 gross tons (GT). AGCS provides global marine and shipping insurance for all types of marine risk, from single vessels and shipments to the most complex fleets and multinational logistics businesses. All told, the Marine Line of Business contributed 11% to AGCS overall premium volume of EUR 8.2bn in 2018.

Allianz Global Corporate & Specialty SE  (AGCS) said that, effective July 1, 2019, Ulrich Kadow will be appointed as AGCS Global Head of Marine. Currently Chief Agent of AGCS Canada, Kadow will take over from current Global Head of Marine and Energy Simon Buxton, who is leaving Allianz. Until a successor in Canada is confirmed, Kadow will maintain a dual leadership role for both the country and Marine Line of Business responsibilities.Kadow has led AGCS’ Canadian business since May 2015, after originally joining AGCS in 2006.

There have been numerous articles and opinion pieces speaking of the potential application areas of maritime autonomous technology, the elimination of “human error”, and the resulting safer operations that will supposedly be realized. The question of whether autonomous ships will offer safer solutions than crewed ships remains to be answered, and will not be resolved today. However, there is an important issue regarding levels of autonomy in vessel operations that needs to be addressed.Many vessel operators feel that this technology will not impact their particular operating environment, and therefore there is no reason for them to worry about it. But the reality is that all vessel operators should stay abreast of developments in the arena of autonomous vessel operations.

Nimble and quick, unmanned aerial vehicles have evolved into a valuable tool for marine and offshore applications.When a U.S. oil tanker conducts a Critical Area Inspection Plan (CAIP) as required by ABS, it is an onerous process. For example, each tank requires seven days of set up with scaffolding and staging. An ABS inspector and UDT technicians must access, and be carefully lowered into the tank with instrumentation and tools. Inspection points in far reaching places are surveyed.

Unmanned systems are finding a growing number of applications in the maritime sector, and have the potential to make a significant contribution to safety and risk management, says the Allianz Global Corporate & Specialty's (AGCS) Safety and Shipping Review 2018.These include assessing environmental pollution, monitoring cargo loading and pirate activity along coastlines and carrying out cargo tank inspections. Drones could enable faster, more informed decisionmaking on board, reducing the impact of any incident. A number of companies are developing drones for sea-based search and rescue operations, as well as drones that can identify and warn swimmers of sharks.

Seas where Sanchi collision incident has taken place are leading region for maritime accidents. East/South East Asian waters have been identified as the top worldwide hotspot for shipping losses, with 34 ships lost in this region in 2016 alone – 40 percent of all shipping losses globally – according to a report from marine insurer Allianz. Analysis of global shipping losses over the last decade has highlighted East/South East Asian seas as an accident hotspot, with the collision of the oil tanker Sanchi with another ship off the coast of Shanghai as the latest major shipping incident in the region. Sanchi is currently on fire as a result of the collision, with its cargo of condensate raising concerns around the potential for explosion and pollution.
