Barcelona Welcomes AIDAperla

AIDAperla - the youngest member of the AIDA Cruises fleet - reached the port of Barcelona via the western Mediterranean on June 7, 2017, as part of its "Welcome Cruises". During AIDAperla’s maiden season, Barcelona is, alongside Palma de Mallorca, one of the start and end ports for her seven-day cruises in the western Mediterranean. The Rostock cruise company’s latest ship will be christened on June 30, 2017 in Palma de Mallorca by model and presenter, Lena Gercke. The christening ceremony will be streamed live on the Internet, the AIDA social media channels and on board all AIDA ships.

ALMACO to Deliver Provision Stores for AIDA Newbuilds

German shipyard Meyer Werft has awarded ALMACO Group the newbuilding contract for provision stores and fast thawing chambers for the next ship generation of AIDA Cruises, which are expected to be delivered end of 2018 and 2021. ALMACO’s scope of work involves a total of 2,600 square meters of provision stores, as well as nine fast thawing chambers (FTC). The FTC is an ALMACO-engineered system that supports a much faster thawing period on less thawing surface, providing a thawing capacity of 750 kg for each room for 12 hours, therefore allowing for 6,750 kg in thawing capacity per 24 hours. ALMACO has delivered FTCs in previous AIDA Cruises newbuilds, AIDAprima and AIDAperla.

Sustainability Report: Carnival Ahead of Emissions Goal

Carnival Corporation & plc released a report today detailing its sustainability efforts, including initiatives which enabled the company to meet its corporate goal to reduce its rate of CO2 emissions from shipboard operations by 20 percent, a year ahead of its initial plan. Third Cruise Terminal Under Construction in Hamburg

Construction of the third cruise terminal in Hamburg commenced July 4 with a symbolic groundbreaking ceremony. And in less than a month, the biggest cruise ceremony will take place on the river Elbe, the fourth edition of the Hamburg Cruise Days, taking place August 1-3. The month of August will see in total 43 cruise calls. Surface construction work on the site of Hamburg’s third cruise terminal at the Kronprinzkai quay in Steinwerder officially commenced last Friday, July 4, with a symbolic groundbreaking ceremony.

Hamburg Hosts 12 Cruise Ships for Ports 825th Anniversary

Over the last weekend (May 9-11, 2014), 12 cruise ships visited the Port of Hamburg and were counted in total with 27 sail-by passages in front of the Landungsbrücken pontoons. Overall, 37,000 cruise passengers were handled during the three days of celebration. The cruise ships prominently showed themselves to the nearly one million visitors of the Port Anniversary, who were able to experience the ocean giants up close. Hamburg Cruise Port Marks 500,000 Passengers

The Hamburg Cruise Port said it reached the 500,000 passenger mark in a single season. The port anticipates further growth forecast for 2014, with the 200th ship in sight. “The visit by the Queen Mary 2 to Hamburg on November6, 2013 will go down in the annals of Hamburg’s cruise industry and become an unforgettable ship’s call for everyone concerned,” said Frank Horch, Senator of the Ministry for Economic, Transport and Innovation Affairs. The visit was not only the 168th call of the current season but also marked the arrival of the 500,000th cruise guest in the city.

Princess Cruises Choose 3G with MCP

Maritime Communications Partner (MCP) was chosen by Princess Cruises to outfit the Sun Princess with on-board 3G wireless communication services. MCP, a global onboard communications partner, announced that the Princess Cruises ship - Sun Princess - is the second cruise ship in the world to offer their passengers 3G mobile communication services at sea. The California based cruise operator launched 3G on their vessel the Sun Princess at the end of May this year. This new service has provided the ships passengers and crew with MCP’s latest mobile communication technology to access data services and improve the user-experience on board.

U.S. Coast Guard Accepts Nine BWTS as AMS

Followers of the Ballast Water Treatement System (BWTS) situation (ie. presumably anyone reading this publication) were heartened last month when the U.S Coast Guard announced its acceptance of nine BWTS as Alternate Management Systems (AMS), helping to finally bring some clarity to ship owners, yards and suppliers. On April 15, 2013, the USCG announced the acceptance of the ballast water treatment systems as AMS in compliance with the service’s March 2012 final rule for Standards for Living Organisms in Ships’ Ballast Water Discharged (SLOSBWD) in U.S. waters.

OceanGuard BWMS Onboard Carnival’s Aida Stella

OceanGuard Ballast Water Management System (BWMS), developed and manufactured by Headway Technology Co. Ltd., has been installed on board Aida Stella, a Carnival luxury cruise vessel. Aida Stella is the first order and application among in Germany for Headway, also the second luxury cruise vessel order from Carnival Corporation since Headway reached the first cooperation with Costa Crociere S.p.A, Italy on July 26th, 2011. Installation and commissioning of OceanGuard BWMS was finished in Papenburg, Germany, and the ship will be launched early March, 2013.   www.headwaytech.com/en
