Newport News Promotes Two

Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) announced two promotions to the company’s leadership team at its Newport News Shipbuilding division: Dave Bolcar has been promoted to vice president of submarine construction, and Bill Smith has been promoted to vice president, fleet support programs. Having most recently served as director of the Columbia-class program, Bolcar is now vice president of submarine construction, which currently encompasses both the Virginia- and Columbia-class submarine programs.

Babcock to Support Aircraft Carrier Engineering

Babcock has been awarded a 12-month contract to assist in designing the engineering support solution for the Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers. Under the £1.17 million contract the U.K. Ministry of Defense (MoD), Babcock and BAE Systems will work together to develop the optimum, fit-for-purpose engineering support solution for the new aircraft carriers, as part of the wider Support Development Phase. Babcock and BAE Systems will be involved in four support development phase work-streams – Class Management, Design Management, Maintenance Management and Information Knowledge Management. Under these work-streams Babcock and BAE Systems will design technical services and maintenance solutions to ensure the carriers are available for their operational requirements.

NNS Wins Navy Contract

Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Co., Newport News, Va., is being awarded a $5,878,888 cost-plus-fixed-fee modification to previously awarded contract (N00024-99-C-2100) for aircraft carrier engineering support services. The contract will provide engineering, technical and design agent services in support of aircraft carrier programs. This effort includes conducting and supporting feasibility and tradeoff studies on new and modified shipboard systems and supporting ship design efforts. Work will be performed in Newport News, Va., and is to be completed by September 2003. Contract funds in the amount of $5,878,888 will expire at the end of the current fiscal year. The Naval Sea Systems Command, Washington, D.C., is the contracting activity.
