US Aircraft Carrier Overhaul Deferred
The aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln's refueling complex overhaul (RCOH) will not start due to insufficient funding. Lincoln was expected to move to Newport News shipyard next week to begin the overhaul. However, as a result of the fiscal constraints resulting from the ongoing continuing resolution (CR), the contract for the refueling complex overhaul (RCOH) has not been issued to Huntington Ingalls Industries, Inc. The aircraft carrier will remain pierside at Naval Station Norfolk until sufficient funding is received to start the execution of the RCOH.
HII Promote Chris Miner V-P In-Service Aircraft Carrier Programs
Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) announce promotion of Chris Miner as Newport News Shipbuilding's V-P of In-Service Aircraft Carrier Programs. In his new position, Miner is responsible for planning and executing aircraft carrier overhaul programs and inactivations, including the upcoming USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) refueling and complex overhaul (RCOH) and the USS Enterprise (CVN 65) inactivation, as well as aircraft carrier fleet support work. RCOH and inactivation work is primarily performed at NNS.
NNS Shipbuilding Employee Gets Community Service Award
HII employee Joey Melendez receives the Society of Professional Hispanic Engineers' STAR Award for outstanding community service. Melendez, a systems engineer for the company's Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) division, was presented with a 2012 SHPE STAR Award during the organization's annual national conference in Fort Worth, Texas. "It's quite an honor to be recognized for my service to the community, especially from a great national organization such as SHPE," Melendez said. "This award means a great deal to me because it highlights my passion for STEM and education.
Northrop Grumman Annual Shipyard 5K Fun Run/Walk
More than 400 employees, their family members and friends participated in Northrop Grumman Corporation's (NYSE:NOC) 5K Fun Run/Walk. The event was held at the company's Shipbuilding sector in Newport News, Va. on Oct.2. Jim Hughes, Newport News' vice president of aircraft carrier overhaul and carrier fleet support, welcomed shipbuilders and their families to the 5K. "This event is one of the many that we're doing this year as a part of our 2010 focus on our people," said Hughes. "What better things to focus on with our people than health, safety, wellness and quality of life.
NG Contract for USS Theodore Roosevelt
The U.S. Navy has awarded Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC) a contract valued at approximately $2.4b for the refueling and complex overhaul (RCOH) of the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71). The work will be performed by the company's Shipbuilding sector in Newport News, Va. and will include the refueling of the ship's reactors, as well as extensive modernization work to more than 2,300 compartments, 600 tanks, and hundreds of systems. In addition, major upgrades will be made to the flight deck, catapults, combat systems and the island.
Northrop Grumman Shakes Up NNS Engineering Dept.
Northrop Grumman Corporation's Newport News sector announced the appointment of Matthew J. Mulherin as sector vice president of the CVNX program, which includes design and engineering work associated with the new class of nuclear-powered aircraft carriers for the United States Navy. Mr. Mulherin, 43, is responsible for program management, engineering, production and planning for the CVNX program. "Matt brings to this position a high level of expertise in the nuclear shipbuilding arena and a good understanding of our customer's objectives in the design and engineering of the future class of carriers," said Thomas C. Schievelbein, corporate vice president and president of the Newport News sector. Prior to this promotion, Mr. Mulherin served as program director, CVNX. Mr.
USS Carl Vinson Refueling and Overhaul Completed
Vinson (CVN 70) five days ahead of schedule. The carrier is undergoing a refueling and complex overhaul (RCOH) at the company's Newport News sector, the nation's sole designer, builder and refueler of nuclear-powered aircraft carriers. Tugboats moved the carrier from dry dock to a shipyard pier on May 9, where it will undergo final outfitting and testing. "Successful completion of the dry dock work and the transitioning of the ship back into the water signifies we're nearing the half-way point of this enormous undertaking and that we are one step closer to bringing the USS Carl Vinson back to life," said Ken Mahler, vice president of aircraft carrier overhaul programs for Northrop Grumman's Newport News sector.
