ABS is Japan's First Foreign RO for Maritime Labor Inspection
ABS has been selected by the Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) as Japan’s first foreign Recognized Organization (RO) for maritime labor inspection. Maritime Labor Convention comprises 16 articles, containing general provisions, which consists of five Titles that outline specific provisions grouped by standard. They include minimum requirements for seafarers to work on a ship; conditions of employment; accommodation, recreational facilities, food and catering; health protection, medical care, welfare and social security protection; and compliance and enforcement of ILO Maritime Labor Convention, 2006 (MLC), ratified in August 2013.
ABS to Class its First Japan-Flagged Vessel
Anchor Handling Tug Supply vessel will be built to ABS class for Offshore Japan Corporation by Japan Marine United Corporation. ABS has been selected by Offshore Japan Corporation (OJC) to class its newly-ordered Anchor Handling Tug Supply (AHTS) vessel, the first Japan-flag ship built to ABS class. ABS: Technical Guidance For Ice Class Tankers
The guide is an outgrowth from ABS’ work with the principal Asian shipyards developing new aframax ice class tanker designs in response to the increased traffic in the Baltic. Growing oil exports from the Russian port of Primorsk and Sakhalin have prompted a marked increase in the number of new tankers on order with ice strengthening to allow more flexible trading. Additionally, operators are taking into consideration the 2010 IMO imposed single hull phase-out deadline as they renew their aframax fleets. “The FEA Guide allows us to perform direct calculations for developing alternative structural arrangements that are more producible than those developed from the prescriptive rules,” says Akira Akiyama, Vice President, Technology & Business Development, ABS Pacific.
