The Maritime Launch of Big Data

It’s no coincidence that Class standard bearer DNV GL’s incoming group chief exec, Remi Eriksen, is a former telecoms engineer who knows his way around Houston (IT) and Singapore (yards). After all, the satellite communications industry understands shipping. The reverse should also be true. Speaking ahead of his first day as CEO, Eriksen describes a future of “fast ships and slow growth” — not bandwidth growth, mind you. Satellite operators, network providers and other vendors are eying broadband for Big Data transfers.

Filipino VP Calls for STCW Audit Assistance

"Germany and the EU cannot possibly have world-class efficient commercial ships manned by Filipinos today, and world-class efficient ships without Filipinos onboard tomorrow", said Vice President of the Philippines Jejomar Binay at a Maritime Round Table held at the Head Offices of Classification Society Germanischer Lloyd (GL) recently. One of the most critical factors to ensuring safety at sea is the human element, without an able and experienced crew and officers the most modern and well designed vessel cannot promise safety. Filipino seafarers are at the heart of the maritime industry, making up almost one third of working seamen on trading vessels.

Clay Maitland Delivers Keynote Address in Stamford, CT

Clay Maitland

SHIPPINGInsight Fleet Optimization Conference kicks off as Maitland weighs in on how best to profitably operate a ship. Here we are, early in the morning, before the coffee has kicked in, and I am tasked with a “keynote speech”. You, in turn, have the job of being suitably inspired by my words of wisdom. So, here is my theme, for the next two days:  we are out to define how to profitably operate a ship. The system, and how to select it, are a big part of the decision. The late Peter Drucker was a famous management guru, who exercised a powerful influence during much of the 20th century.
