Classification society Lloyd’s Register (LR) said it has awarded statement of compliance (SOC) certification to German marine engineering specialists MARSIG for its searecs electronic record book. The platform offers an electronic alternative to hardcopy logbooks and unifies the extensive collection of documents used on board a vessel into one logbook including bridge, engine, ballast water, oil and cargo records.The move toward electronic logbooks has been embraced by regulators as a much more effective way of monitoring this crucial information.

Wärtsilä Voyage has signed a contract to deliver radio and integrated navigation systems for 10 icebreaking liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers to be constructed for the Arctic LNG-2 project.The order was placed in January 2021 and is now in process of execution, in partnership with South Korean shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industries Co. Ltd shipyard. The new contract is an extension of the announcement made last summer, where Wärtsilä Voyage equipped five LNG carriers with integrated bridge systems under the same project.

Totem Plus is to offer its customers Naval Dome’s cyber defence solution as a supplement to its PC-based navigation and automation systems, following the September signing of a Letter of Intent (LOI) with the cyber security specialist. The two Israel-based companies began cooperating last year when the Naval Dome solution was used to protect the Totem Plus ECDIS, IMAC (Integrated Monitoring, Alarm & Control), VDR and BAM (Bridge Alert Management) installations aboard a 5000TEU containership.

The German navigation system integrator Raytheon Anschütz has won a contract for the supply of a Synapsis Integrated Navigation System (INS) to an advanced research vessel. VARD Holding Limited, a major global designer and shipbuilder of specialized vessels, with their subsidiary VARD Electro AS, have selected Raytheon Anschütz’ Synapsis INS for a new research  vessel. The Synapsis INS is part of a large equipment and electrical installation package, which VARD Electro AS will provide to Cochin Shipyard Ltd.

Japan Radio Company (JRC) has received DNV-GL Integrated Navigation System (INS) type approval for the Multi Function Display (MFD) which also includes the network based ICS suffix. JRC’s flexible system meets and exceeds the new IMO performance standard resolution MSC.252(83) and are approved to be expanded to meet the highest class notations such as NAUT-OC/AW/OSV to ensure the safety of a vessel at sea. The INS provides added value for officers to plan, monitor and/or control safety of navigation and progress of the ship by combining and integrating functions and information, JRC said.

The German navigation system integrator Raytheon Anschütz has won a contract to supply the latest generation of IMO-certified Integrated Navigation Systems (INS) to three car carriers built by the Croatian shipbuilder Uljanik Brodogradiliste. The Pure Car and Truck Carriers (PCTCs) will be owned by Cayman Island based Auto Marine Transport Inc. and are scheduled for entering service from end of 2016. The new PCTCs will operate under a long-term charter of Siem Car Carriers AS. Each of the vessels has capacity to carry up to 7,000 cars.

The German navigation system manufacturer Raytheon Anschütz has announced a new revision of the Anschütz Standard 22 Gyro Compass System. The enhancements improve the integration capabilities of the  gyro compass and secures compliance with latest regulations. Raytheon Anschütz supplied its Synapsis Integrated Navigation System (INS) to a series of four new 32,000 DWT MPP heavy-lift vessels being built at Shanghai Shipyard for the Chinese-Polish joint stock shipping company Chipolbrok. The INS supplied includes X- and S-band radars as well as four Synapsis bridge workstations for chart radar and ECDIS with radar video overlay, the German navigation system manufacturer said. The INS centralizes common tasks and services and provides functional integration of navigation systems and applications as well as of important sensors.

On opening day of SMM, the German navigation system manufacturer Raytheon Anschütz officially launched the newly developed NautoScan NX network radar transceivers, the centerpiece of its next generation Synapsis Radar system. While the Integrated Bridge increasingly plays a bigger role in various shipbuilding programs, in many cases the degree of integration can be limited and does not allows a fully functional integration of different navigation systems or further ship systems on the bridge. In tandem there has been an increasing demand for higher level integrated bridge systems, which was reasonably driven by more sophisticated and safety-sensitive vessels such as cruise ships, specialized vessels and few oil tankers.

Many commercial marine products evolve from military roots. At Euronaval last month in Paris, contractors large and small from around the globe showcased new and emerging technologies.
