Storm Approaching: Firms Fear IMO's 2020 Rules

U.S. furniture company RC Willey Home Furnishings is so concerned that new global clean air rules will cause transport disruption that it brought forward the shipment of arm chairs and sofas from China by two months.The tougher regulations, set by the United Nations shipping agency, the International Maritime Organization (IMO), come into force on Jan 1. Costs will rise for ships towards the end of this year and there will be a knock on effect for trucks and other transporters…

Panama Canal Further Espansion Envisaged by ex-Commissioner

Alberto Alemán Zubieta, immediate past commissioner of the Panama Canal Authority accepts award, looks to canal future. Mr. Alemán spoke as he accepted the Containerization and Intermodal Institute's 'Connie Award' at the annual luncheon at the Newark Club. A construction engineer who assumed the helm of the PCA in 1998, Aleman has overseen the design and present $5.25 billion expansion until his retirement in September. He noted that the present expansion "will not be the last." As the project continues, he noted, the increasing size of new vessels will mandate yet another expansion.

Johns Receives 2011 Connie Award From CII

The Containerization & Intermodal Institute (CII) presented the 2011 Connie Award to Robert Kenneth (Ken) Johns, former president of Sea-Land Service Inc., for his significant influence in containerization in worldwide trade and transportation. The Connie Awards luncheon was held Monday, December 5 at The Newark (NJ) Club and marked 40 years of Connie Awards. A Lifetime Achievement Award was also presented to Stanley Sher, a maritime attorney in Washington D.C.…

Richard Steinke Receives 2011 Connie Award

More than 200 turn out to for Port of Long Beach Executive Director Honored by the Containerization & Intermodal Institute. The Connie Award was presented by the Containerization and Intermodal Institute (CII) to Richard D. Steinke, who will retire this month as executive director of the Port of Long Beach. Mr. Steinke was honored for his leadership role in developing the Port into one of the world's largest container harbors. More than 200 people attended the industry-wide dinner event held on September 21, at the Renaissance Hotel.

Richard D. Steinke To Receive 2011 Connie Award

Steinke, who will retire this year as executive director of the Port of Long Beach and who was instrumental in developing the Port into one of the world's largest container harbors, has been selected to receive the Connie Award to be presented on the West Coast by the Containerization & Intermodal Institute (www.containerization.org). The industry-wide dinner event honoring Mr. Steinke will be held on Wednesday, September 21, at the Renaissance Hotel in Long Beach, CA.

Bruner, Newsome Receive East Coast Connie Awards

The Containerization & Intermodal Institute (CII) will present the 2010 East Coast-based Connie Awards to J. Russell Bruner, Chairman and CEO of Maersk Inc. and James I. Newsome III, President and CEO of the South Carolina State Ports Authority. The evening event on Tuesday, December 7 at The Newark Club will also commemorate the 50th anniversary of CII. The Newark Club event is in addition to the West Coast-based Connie Awards on September 30 in Long Beach, CA, honoring Ron Widdows and Jon Hemingway. CII holds two Connie events each year to accommodate industry leaders on both coasts. Each recipient is being honored for his significant influence in containerization in worldwide trade and transportation, according to Allen Clifford, CII President.

Butcher and Kuo Receive Connie Awards

The Containerization & Intermodal Institute (CII) will present the 2009 Connie Awards this year to James E. Butcher, Chairman of Höegh Autoliners Inc., and to Evergreen's Vice Group Chairman Captain Shiuan Y. Kuo. Each recipient will be honored for his significant influence in containerization in worldwide trade and transportation, according to Allen Clifford, CII President. A graduate of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point, in 1970 Jim Butcher served as Third Mate with the U.S. Military Sealift Command for one year before joining the Luckenbach Steamship Company in New York. He moved to Höegh Autoliners as Operations Manager when the Oslo, Norway, carrier opened its U.S. subsidiary in 1973 and was a founding member.

CII Seeks Award Nominations

The Containerization & Intermodal Institute (CII) will host an industry-wide Connie Award dinner on October 1 at the Renaissance Hotel in Long Beach, Ca. The event is in addition to the annual Connie Luncheon that will take place December 7 at the Newark Club in Newark, N.J. Allen Clifford, CII President and Executive VP of Mediterranean Shipping Company, said "Every year industry representatives across the U.S. have been drawn to the prestigious Connie Awards, so we will hold a Connie program on both coasts to meet the popular demand of this event. The Connie Award has gone to industry leaders throughout the U.S., and even internationally, at a single event each year on the East Coast. Mr. Clifford noted that CII is seeking nominations for both the California and NY/NJ events.

MSC Announces Promotions

Mediterranean Shipping Company (USA) Inc. has announced key executive promotions that go into effect January 1, 2006. Claudio Bozzo has been named president and chief operating officer; Allen Clifford will now serve as executive vice president, Commercial; Robert Milazzo is promoted to executive vice president, Intermodal and Equipment Control; Giancarlo Morgera has been named senior vice president, Liner Services; Christopher J. Parvin is now vice president Marine Operations; and Fabio Catassi is promoted to president and chief operating officer of Interlink Technologies, the IT subsidiary company of MSC (USA) Inc. Nicola Arena remains with MSC (USA) as its newly named chairman as well as chief executive officer of MSC (USA) Inc. and its subsidiary Interlink.
