Sailboat Catches Fire off Honolulu
A sailboat with five people aboard caught fire off Honolulu, Thursday, promting responsefrom the U.S. Coast Guard who sent a 45-foot Response Boat-Medium crew from Station Honolulu to tow the vessel to Pier 38 in Honolulu. Sector Honolulu Command Center watchstanders received a report at 9 a.m. from patrons at Aloha Tower of the sailboat on fire about a mile off Sand Island. The watchstanders immediately diverted the Coast Guard Cutter Morgenthau’s smallboat crew, already underway in the harbor for training, and directed the launch of the station’s RB-M crew. Upon arrival the rescue crews assessed the situation and found the crew aboard the sailboat had put the fire out with an extinguisher. No injuries or pollution were reported.
Honolulu Harbor Gets New Security Sign
Construction will be completed Friday of a new sign informing mariners of the 24/7 security zone in the Honolulu Harbor and whom to contact for permission to enter, the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) said in a press announcement. The sign, measuring 12 x 24 feet, is worded with large letters created using highly reflective tape, will be lit at night and is oriented so that mariners will be able to read the sign while still offshore, outside the security zone. Chinese Maritime Safety Ship Makes First Ever US Visit
Chinese Maritime Safety Administration ship 'Haixun 31' to be hosted by US 14th Coast Guard District in Honolulu Harbor. The Haixun 31 will be escorted into Aloha Tower is to be met 4, September 2012, by a parade of ships that will include the Coast Guard Cutter Galveston Island and the Honolulu Fire Department fireboat Moku Ahi. The Coast Guard and Chinese Maritime Safety Administration are scheduled to conduct a joint search and rescue table top exercise and on water exercise in Honolulu.
