MariLight Project Aims to 'Clean Up' Maritime Manufacturing

Malin Marine Consultants were awarded support through the Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition (CMDC) for its MariLight project, a project that seeks to develop new processes for building marine components using Large Scale Additive Manufacturing (LSAM) technology.The project aims to provide the industry with a clear route to using LSAM for certified and approved component fabrication, moving from conventional, manual fabrication processes to an automated and flexible rapid manufacturing route.

Shipbuilding: $13.3 Mln Awarded for R&D Projects

NSRP Selects Next Round of Shipbuilding R&D Projects

The Executive Control Board of the National Shipbuilding Research Program (NSRP) has selected a new round of research and development projects for award, as part of the program's continuing mission to reduce costs associated with U. S. shipbuilding and ship repair. These new projects, valued at over $14.5 million, including cost share, were among those proposed in response to Research Announcement 14-01, issued in June 2015. Objective: This project is a follow-on to the HiDep Weld Tfillet and Butt Weld Development RA project. It aims to implement the results of the new welding process to reduce weld distortion and improve productivity in shipyard panel construction. The new process utilizes induction heating technology and has minimal capital cost requirements.

Altair Acquires EM Software & Systems – S.A.

Altair acquired 100 percent of EM Software & Systems – S.A. (Pty) Ltd and its international distributor offices in the United States, Germany, and China this month. This development adds the FEKO® solver to the HyperWorks® suite and strengthens the Altair simulation offering in the aerospace, automotive, and shipbuilding industries in particular, reflecting the commitment of the company to provide comprehensive, best-of-breed solutions to its customers. In addition, in-house electromagnetic expertise crossing multiple industries will enable the company’s consulting arm, Altair ProductDesign, to take on more responsibility in customer engagements where this specialized applied engineering knowledge is required.

ClassNK Releases New Hull Design Software

ClassNK announced the release of a new version of its PrimeShip-HULL (HCSR) ship design support software. In addition to a variety of new features, the new version includes in the new second draft of the IACS Harmonized Common Structural Rules, or H-CSR, for bulk carriers and oil tankers released on April 1, 2013. Initially released in July 2012, ClassNK’s PrimeShip-HULL (HCSR) was the world’s first design support software to incorporate the requirements of the new IACS Harmonized Common Structural Rules, and is already used by shipyards and designers in China, Korea and Japan.

Design of Volvo Ocean Yacht Race Winner Aided by Hyperworks

Altair's CAE (Computer Aided Engineering) suite was used by Italian designers [AB]structures to structurally design the Groupama Sailing Team yacht Groupama 4, winner of the 2011-2012 Volvo Ocean Race. The yacht, skippered by Franck Cammas, claimed victory in the Volvo Ocean Race on July 9 in Galway, Ireland, after nine months and more than 37,000 nautical miles sailed around the world under the harshest conditions. It has been a busy year for [AB]structures, taking on the structural design of three of the six yachts in the 2011-2012 edition of the race.
