India Can Become Engine of Maritime Growth: PM

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated the India's first ever Maritime Summit and said that the country's vast coast line of 7500 km offers vast investment opportunities. “Our maritime agenda will complement this ambitious infrastructure plan for the hinterland, which is going on in parallel,” he said. He called upon international investors to invest in India’s maritime sector, which is poised for quantum growth. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said over the last two years major ports have awarded 56 new projects with an investment of more than Rs 250 billion. This itself, he said, will help create an additional capacity of 317 million tonnes per annum. "Our vision is to increase port capacity from 1,400 million tonnes to 3,000 million tonnes by 2025.

Nicaragua Canal Project Fraught with Risks

Nicaragua's planned $50 billion canal project is "fraught with risks and uncertainties," and could cause more harm than good unless the government and its Chinese builder fund a host of mitigation measures, an environmental consultancy said. The 172-mile (278 km), Chinese-backed project to rival the Panama Canal is one of the world's most ambitious infrastructure schemes, but it has been met with widespread incredulity, especially over its source of funding and planned 2020 completion deadline. ABB Wins $85 mln Qatar Order

ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, has won an order worth around $85 million to provide turnkey substations to help integrate electricity from a new independent water and power plant (IWPP) into the country’s grid. The IWPP will utilize Qatar’s natural gas resources to produce 2,520 megawatts (MW) of power and desalination capacity of around 600 million liters of water daily, helping supply drinking water and power to one of the economic zones that Qatar has made a centerpiece of its plans to modernize and diversify its economy. Qatar, on a peninsula east of Saudi Arabia, is building ambitious infrastructure including rail, energy and water desalination facilities.

Nicaragua Canal Project Study Delivered, Details Scarce

A long-awaited study on the impact of the proposed $50 billion Nicaraguan waterway by a British consultancy has been delivered, a canal official said on Monday, the first major milestone since a symbolic groundbreaking six months ago. The social and environmental impact study by the consultancy, Environmental Resources Management Ltd, will be discussed by an inter-institutional commission in June, before being voted on by the canal commission in July, Telemaco Talavera, spokesman of the government canal commission, said. Bamburi to Tap Kenya Infrastructure Boom as Profit Tumbles

Bamburi Cement's pretax profit slumped 28 percent to 2.3 billion shillings ($26.20 million) in the first half of 2014, the company said on Thursday, as it outlined plans to profit from Kenya's ambitious infrastructure spending plans. Controlled by French firm Lafarge SA, Bamburi is the biggest cement maker in east Africa's largest economy, where a construction boom driven by infrastructure projects and real estate has helped boost demand for cement. "We are optimistic that the business environment will progressively improve in the second half of the year," the company said in a statement, citing upcoming infrastructure projects in Kenya. Bamburi said it expects Kenya's planned infrastructure projects, including roads, railways and a new Indian Ocean port in Lamu, to improve sales.

RINA to Verify Key Metrics of Euro Tunnel

RINA GROUP is to verify the inter-operability and safety of the longest combined-traffic immersed tunnel in the world.The overall estimated value of the project is 5.5 billion Euros. The Fehmarnbelt Fixed Link will be 18 km long and will connect Denmark with Germany. International certification and classification society, the RINA Group, has been awarded a contract with the Danish company Femern A/S for the verification of the railway interoperability and safety requirements of the Fehmarnbelt Fixed Link. That is an underwater tunnel that will link Germany and Denmark.
