Trade group the American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA) elected a new Chairman of the Board of Directors, Sean Strawbridge of the Port of Corpus Christi, last week during its 111th Annual Convention and Expo in Orlando, Fla. Outgoing Chairman Mario Cordero of the Port of Long Beach made the formal announcement during his address to members and attendees.AAPA President and CEO Chris Connor remarked on the transition, "Our work at AAPA is bolstered by the leadership and input of our chairperson and board of directors.

Huntington Ingalls Industries' Newport News Shipbuilding division partnered with the American Heart Association to teach shipbuilders how to perform hands-only CPR during a demonstration Thursday. The American Heart Association provided the shipyard a mobile CPR unit for on-site instruction and take-home kits to promote hands-on practice with family and friends. With more than 300 employees in attendance, representatives from the HealthWaves wellness program were onsite to greet shipbuilders and discuss the importance of the CPR training led by American Heart Association representatives. "It's important for shipbuilders and their families to learn CPR because with this knowledge they can help save lives," said HealthWaves Program Director Becky Johnson.

Ingalls Shipbuilding, a division of Huntington Ingalls Industries, says it is doing its part to fight obesity and bolster the health of its employees. The shipyard's health-conscious changes have helped it succeed as a Platinum Fit-Friendly Worksite. Fit-Friendly Worksites are recognized by the American Heart Association as employers who go above and beyond when it comes to employee health. These companies offer both nutritional services and physical activities aimed at supporting the employees' health. "We are honored to receive this award," said Edmond E. Hughes, Ingalls' vice president of human resources and administration. "There were only four companies in the state of Mississippi to earn a Platinum status, so we are part of a very selective group in the state.

Huntington Ingalls Industries' Shipbuilding Division receives a Platinum Award in the American Heart Association's Fit-Friendly Worksite program. The award is the highest level recognized by the AHA for companies that demonstrate progressive leadership in making the health and wellness of their employees a priority. "Our shipbuilders are the greatest asset we have, and I am proud of the progress we have made to provide resources promoting physical activity and a healthy work environment," said Ingalls Shipbuilding President Irwin F. Horizon Lines has announced that Joe Rodriguez has been named Vice President, Sales and Marketing, Eastern Region, for the company's Horizon Lines, LLC operating subsidiary. Mr. Rodriguez will oversee all sales activity, pricing and marketing in the eastern half of the United States and Puerto Rico, reporting directly to Brian Taylor, Executive Vice President, Chief Operating Officer and Chief Commercial Officer of Horizon Lines, Inc. "Joe has extensive experience selling our services in the Puerto Rico trade, as well as in the larger eastern region of the United States," Mr. Taylor said. This Safety Alert serves as a reminder to the international maritime community that when it is necessary to provide a patient Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) there is simply no time to waste. Every second which passes affects the patient's chance of survival. Sudden cardiac arrest is most often caused by an abnormal heart rhythm called ventricular fibrillation (VF). Cardiac arrest can also occur after the onset of a heart attack or as a result of electrocution or near drowning. When sudden cardiac arrest occurs, the victim collapses, becomes unresponsive to gentle shaking, stops normal breathing and after two rescue breaths, still isn't breathing normally, coughing or moving.

Silversea Cruises announced today that Brad Ball has been named Director of Public Relations. Ball will oversee the ultra-luxury line's worldwide public relations efforts and report to Barbara Muckermann, Silversea's Vice President of Corporate Communications. Brad Ball brings over 10 years of cruise experience to his new position at Silversea. He was previously employed at Renaissance Cruises as director of publicity and media relations. Ball joined Silversea three months ago as a public relations consultant for the company. Brad Ball assumes all responsibilities formerly handled by Dale Dibello-Nicholson, who has accepted a position as Director of Public Relations for the American Heart Association, South Florida Region.

Adm. Owen W. Siler, 85, commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard from 1974 to 1978, died from heart failure July 17 at St. Joseph's hospital in Atlanta. A World War II veteran, Siler served in combat duty aboard two ships in the Pacific and participated in the occupation of Northern Honshu, Japan, following Japan's surrender. His Coast Guard career highlights included serving as a deck officer afloat, as an aviator performing search and rescue patrols, and ashore in the law enforcement, marine safety and environmental protection fields.
