Savvy Fuel Management Fuels TOTE’s Growth

As Tote pioneers the use of natural gas as a marine fuel with two groundbreaking projects, Anthony Chiarello combines the strength and diversity of the Saltchuk group of companies with a forward-thinking, environmentally correct Tote business plan. As TOTE prepares to bring the world’s first natural gas-powered containerships to the maritime industry, the firm will also be the first to convert its existing fleet to run on natural gas. Two Orca Class vessels, operated by Totem Ocean Trailer Express (Totem Ocean) in the Alaska trade, will be converted with minimal time out of service and return as the most environmentally advanced ships in the nation.

Hirsch Maritime Award at the organization’s annual convention and Sea Service Awards Luncheon in Long Beach, Calif. last week. The Vincent T. Hirsch Maritime Award, named for a patron and past president of the Navy League, was presented to Chiarello in honor of his achievements during his more than 30 year career with maritime organizations and “contributions to protecting and growing the privately-owned U.S. Chiarello, who joined TOTE, Inc.

TOTE Goes Gas

TOTE, Inc.: The New look of American Shipping Group

On January 1, 2012 American Shipping Group underwent a dramatic transformation. The company, formerly known as ASG, became TOTE, Inc., and experienced a makeover in logo, look and structure. Seeing opportunity for market growth, TOTE, Inc. organized its five independently managed businesses in to three groups: Maritime, Logistics and Ship Management. For now, each company will retain their name, logo and independent branding. The strengths of the individual companies will be enhanced by marketing and sales efforts for the overall portfolio by all TOTE, Inc, affiliated companies.

Totem Terminal Named in Memory of Robert Magee

Legendary maritime and Pierce County community leader, Robert P. Magee, was honored September 21, 2011 with the naming of Totem Ocean Trailer Express, Inc’s Tacoma terminal in his memory. The Robert P. Magee Terminal dedication ceremony at Port of Tacoma was attended by about 150 industry and community leaders, extended family members, TOTE customers and employees who gathered to pay tribute to a man many described as visionary. After Bob’s death in November 2009, TOTE employees rallied around the idea of honoring Bob’s memory with a tribute.

Totem Ocean Trailer Express Names Tacoma Terminal

Totem Ocean Trailer Express, Inc. Names Tacoma Terminal In Memory of Legendary Leader. Totem Ocean Trailer Express, Inc.’s (TOTE) Tacoma Terminal has been named the Robert P. Magee Marine Terminal in memory of and tribute to TOTE’s legendary leader. The new name is proudly displayed on signs at each gated entrance to the terminal, as well as in front of the administration building. A formal dedication ceremony will take place on Wednesday, September 21, 2011 at the TOTE Terminal at the Port of Tacoma. Bob Magee began working for TOTE in May 1986 as Vice President of Marine Operations.

American Shipping Group announced the appointment of Anthony Chiarello as President of American Shipping Group (ASG), effective August 1. Chiarello joins ASG from NYK Logistics (Americas) where he served as COO and Executive Vice President. Sea Star, American Shipping Realign Leadership

American Shipping Group, Inc. announced the following organizational changes:  Frank Peake will join the American Shipping Group (ASG) as Vice President, focusing on strategic planning for all ASG companies operating in the Puerto Rico and Alaskan markets. Steve Hastings has been appointed President of Sea Star Line. “These organizational changes will allow us to best utilize the skill sets of these two very talented gentlemen.” said Tim Engle, American Shipping Group Chairman. “Frank will be assisting me in shaping the future strategic vision of ASG. Ed Waryas, Vice President & Marine Development Manager for Lloyd’s Register North America, Inc. has received the Lauren S. McCready Award for 2009. This award is presented annually by the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy Alumni Association for “Outstanding Naval Architecture or Marine Engineering Contributions to the Maritime Industry.”  The award recognizes alumni who are members of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (SNAME) and who have made significant technical achievements possible. It is named for Rear Admiral Lauren S.
