Dutch start-up Skoon Energy and the Port of Amsterdam have launched a floating battery service to bring mobile stored power into the port and inner city of Amsterdam.According to a release from the sea port, the battery, which is placed on a barge and powered by local, renewable energy, will help balance the electricity grid. Because it is placed on a barge, the battery can deliver electricity anyplace close to water.Skoon operates a platform that enables mobile battery sharing to optimize the economics for battery owners and user. This concept of battery sharing facilitates all services for energy users who are in temporary need of electricity.In April and May, the number of river cruise calls is at its peak, due to the flower field season.

Dutch outfit TMA Logistics has been commissioned by Siemens Gamesa Renewables Energy (SGRE) to provide the transhipment and transhipment of wind turbines for Windpark Fryslân.Wind farm Fryslan comprises 89 wind turbines that will be realised in the Frisian part of the IJsselmeer, near Breezanddijk. The project is expected to start in August 2020 and the wind farm will supply electricity to ± 500,000 households.SGRE is carrying out the project in close cooperation with Van Oord Offshore Wind BV. Van Oord is laying the foundations and laying the cables and monopiles. These monopiles will most likely also be delivered via the TMA terminal.All foundation piles are produced in Rostock, Germany, weigh 220,000 kilos each and are approximately 42 meters long.

The US-based Taronis Fuels will be launching its first-ever production facility in Western Europe in the port of Amsterdam. The new site will be dedicated to the production of bio-based welding gas, a fuel type commonly used in the construction and shipbuilding industries.Taronis Fuels, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Taronis Technologies, decided on Amsterdam on account of its strong focus on sustainability and innovation, combined with a fertile sales market due to its proximity to the sea, good port-hinterland connectivity, and aviation links.The process of cutting steel (including bar and plate elements) with welding gas (also known as acetylene gas) involves the use of ultra-high energy density in order to ensure consistently high flame temperatures.

Transhipment in the North Sea Canal Area of the seaports of Amsterdam, IJmuiden, Beverwijk and Zaanstad rose in the first half of 2019 to 54.1 million tonnes, an increase of 7%.According to the Netherlands seaport, this was the result of an increase in transhipment in the first six months of this year in the port of Amsterdam by 12.3% to 45.4 million tonnes – another record.In IJmuiden, transhipment fell by 12.3% to 8.5 million tonnes, Beverwijk recorded a 23% increase to 349,000 tonnes and in Zaanstad transhipment fell by 13.2% to 72,000 tonnes.The increase in Amsterdam in the first half of the year was caused by both liquid and dry bulk and containers. Liquid bulk transhipment rose by 10.6% to 25.9 million tonnes.

Dutch seaports processed a record volume of goods in 2018 as the throughput of containers increased the most, reported the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS).According to Statistics Netherlands (CBS), the total volume of incoming and outgoing cargo shipments to and from Dutch seaports reached a historic high of almost 605 million tonnes in 2018."This is an increase of over 1.5 percent relative to 2017. At 4.5 percent, container transhipment saw the highest increase," CBS said.Two-thirds of cargo handling in Dutch seaports consisted of unloaded goods in 2018. Three-quarters of these goods concerned dry bulk (ore, coal and agricultural products) or liquid bulk (crude oil and petroleum products). Incoming container shipments increased by 6 percent.

The inland terminals CTU in Lelystad, HOV Harlingen and Westerman Multimodal Logistics in Hasselt joined the North West Central Corridor in June.The new partnership of deep-sea terminals, inland terminals and inland shipping companies on the Amsterdam-Utrecht-Rotterdam route was established in February 2019.The number of inland terminals connected to the North West Central Corridor has increased in three months from five to eight terminals, resulting in a total shipment volume of 6,500 TEU per week. Royal Huisman, a Dutch shipyard that specialises in the building and repair of sailing yachts, said that it will take over the Holland Jachtbouw facility in Amsterdam for further expansion.The facility, which entered the ownership of the Port of Amsterdam on May 14, will now be leased to Royal Huisman, which will dedicate the yard to its future new-build and refit projects."With the arrival of Royal Huisman, the port of Amsterdam has attracted yet another yacht manufacturer with a Royal Charter," said a release from Amsterdam port.Royal Huisman is the second superyacht manufacturer to join the port of Amsterdam community, following Feadship Royal van Lent, which opened its facilities there in 2016.

The newest cruise ship in the Holland America Line fleet, the Nieuw Statendam, made its maiden call to the port of Amsterdam on Sunday, 5 May 2019.The second Pinnacle Class ship moored at the Passenger Terminal Amsterdam (PTA) and was welcomed with a water salute by Port of Amsterdam. Amsterdam will be the ship’s home port during the upcoming summer season.This was the maiden call for the ship that was christened by Oprah Winfrey in Ft. Lauderdale last February. Port of Amsterdam realised net profit of EUR 68.5 million in 2018, which represents a 12.5% increase compared to 2017 (net profit of EUR 60.9 million).Revenue rose slightly in 2018, rising 5 percent to EUR 157.4 million, primarily due to a record amount of land allocations totalling 45.1 hectares (2017: 18 hectares) and an increase in harbour dues owing to a record level of transhipment totalling 82.3 million tonnes of cargo (2017: 81.3 million tonnes).The annual figures show a financially healthy position for Port of Amsterdam, which is benefitting from the favourable economic climate. The port of Amsterdam said that Several new berths have been added for inland shipping in the mouth of the Afrikahaven (Afrika Harbour).The berths, which became operational last week, are specially designed for tankers carrying flammable materials (marked by a blue cone symbol).The addition of the new berths became necessary when the existing berths designated for these types of vessels were removed due to the construction of new – or extensions to existing – terminals. Singapore-headquartered international petroleum storage and logistics provider Global Petro Storage (GPS) has entered into an agreement with the Port of Amsterdam to develop a railcar connection on land adjacent to GPS' existing 11-tank gasoline and bioguel storage and blending facility.GPS intends to develop a rail connection to the public network and to points across Europe that will increase its efficiency and offerings to clients.Port of Amsterdam endorses the importance of good rail connections to and from the Amsterdam port region. Transport by rail is safe and sustainable. Kalmar is helping the Dutch company Ter Haak Group to improve the sustainability of its operations with the delivery of three Kalmar Eco Reachstackers, one Kalmar Gloria Reachstacker and three Empty Container Handlers to its Container Stevedoring IJmuiden (CSY) - Haringhaven and Container Service Amsterdam (CSA)  terminals.The provider of cargo handling solutions and services to ports and terminals said in a press release that all machines are covered with a Kalmar Care service contract."The order was booked in Cargotec's Q4 2018 order intake and the delivery took place in February 2019," Kalmar, part of Cargotec, said.Sustainability is high on Ter Haak Group's agenda…

The shipping companies and terminals in and around Amsterdam port are launching a range of initiatives for using rail more extensively for the transport of cargo, including containers and liquid bulk cargo.Recently Port of Amsterdam organised a rail freight transport breakfast session for clients and stakeholders who have an interest in rail freight transport. Netherlands' port of Amsterdam welcomed a total of 41,424 barges and 7,525 sea-going vessels in 2018, including 180 sea cruise ships. The numbers for 2017 were 40,012 and 7,011, respectively.The seaport in Amsterdam said in a press release that while the number of shipping accidents increased from 32 in 2017 to 49 in 2018, the number of serious shipping accidents remained virtually level from 2017. One fatal accident unfortunately occurred in the port in 2018.Although the port saw an increase in shipping activity levels in 2018, Harbour Master Marleen van de Kerkhof believes there is no causal relationship between this increased activity and the number of incidents.Marleen said: "This is explained in the notes to these statistics.

Port of Amsterdam CEO Koen Overtoom and ten other Amsterdam residents have been named Energy Commissioners by Platform 02025, a non-profit that aims to make Amsterdam a leader in clean energy.Amsterdam port said in a press release that the appointment was co-initiated by the National Energy Committee, which is headed by the National Energy Commissioner, Ruud Koornstra.Platform 02025 seeks to motivate and inspire Amsterdam residents to transition to clean, safe and natural energy by 2025. The circular plastics hub in the Port of Amsterdam is expanding through the construction of a new plastics recycling plant. Plastic Recycling Amsterdam (PRA), a collaboration between Umincorp and Milieu Service Nederland, commenced construction of a plant this week.The Dutch port said that this plant, which can be expanded on a modular basis, will initially process 17,000 tonnes of plastics annually and prepare them to be reused.In the plant, the collected plastics are first washed, shredded and then routed through a magnetic bath. Using Magnetic Density Separation (MDS) technology, the plastics can be separated with a purity of 99% because different plastics have different weights. This technology was originally developed at Delft University of Technology.

European multimodal company Samskip Multimodal has launched Netherlands-Italy rail service that would bring multimodal benefits to Amsterdam.Officially launched on October 17, the connection sees trains depart from Melzo east of Milan three times a week, to be ready for unloading along 750m intermodal rail tracks inside TMA Logistics' Holland Cargo Terminal (HCT), Amsterdam 24 hours later.As well as avoiding the driver delays increasingly affecting European road transport, arrivals in Amsterdam coincide with Samskip shortsea departures to Hull, creating a seamless multimodal option to minimise post-Brexit border control issues.The new rail link is in addition to six times weekly train services connecting Melzo and Rotterdam…

Transhipment in the North Sea Canal Area at the seaports Amsterdam, IJmuiden, Beverwijk and Zaanstad declined to 49.4 million tonnes in the first half of 2018, a decrease of 5.1%. The Port of Amsterdam saw transhipment fall by 4.8% to 40.2 million tonnes.In IJmuiden, transhipment declined to 9.3 million tonnes (-4.4%), Beverwijk registered a decline to 282,000 tonnes (-18.6%) and in Zaanstad transhipment fell to 84,000 tonnes (-59.3%).The decline in Amsterdam in the first half of the year was due to two cargo flows: coal and oil products. Transhipment of coal was down 25.5% in the first six months of 2018 to 6.4 million tonnes. Transhipment of oil products also declined by 6.7% to 22.1 million tonnes.

The growing number of construction projects in the Greater Amsterdam Area has created a need for a smart and efficient method for transporting materials to building sites. In an effort to meet this demand, the City of Amsterdam, Port of Amsterdam, Waternet and TNO (the Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research) have launched a partnership project in Amsterdam focussing on building logistics. As part of the project, commissioned by the Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment, the consortium partners will be facilitating the creation of a multimodal building hub in the Port of Amsterdam. The multimodal building hub will be used to redirect a maximum amount of construction traffic from the road to the water from a single point located on the water.

Havenbedrijf Amsterdam N.V. realised revenue of EUR 150.1 million, compared to EUR 146.3 million in 2016. The operating result increased from EUR 73.3 million in 2016 to EUR 74.3 million in 2017. Netherlands- based Van Straalen De Vries (VSDV) Transport Group began work of new building on the Port of Amsterdam’s Beiraweg. The ceremony was attended by VSDV Group family members, shareholders and employees. The company’s directors turned the first sod together for the new cross-dock facility, which is being built by the Aan de Stegge construction and engineering company on behalf of Peeters Vervoerscentrale and Van Staaveren Amsterdam. The building will be completed by the 2018 Builders Holidays in July/August. In constructing the new building, which will cover a total of 5,500 square metres and will be partially equipped with solar panels, 40 docks and a vehicle cleaning facility, the company is fully prepared for any future industry trends and developments.
