USCG to Establish Security Zone for State of the Union Address
The Coast Guard will establish a temporary security zone Tuesday in designated waters in the National Capital Region for the State of the Union address. The security zone will be in effect from 4 p.m. Tuesday until 2 a.m. Wednesday, which may limit or prohibit navigation by commercial and recreational waterway users. The security zone will include the Potomac River from the Francis Scott Key Bridge, south to approximately two miles north of the Woodrow Wilson Bridge. The security zone will also include the Georgetown Channel Tidal Basin as well as the Anacostia River from the 11th Street Bridge to its confluence with the Potomac River. Entering or operating in the security zone is prohibited unless authorized by the captain of the port of Baltimore.
U.S. Coast Guard Responds to Navy Yard Shooter
The Coast Guard captain of the port has established a temporary safety and security zone Monday in response to a report of a shooter at the Navy Yard in Washington, D.C. The safety and security zone will be in effect for an undetermined amount of time and will limit all navigation on the Anacostia River from Haines Point to the John Philip Sousa Bridge. Entering or operating in the security zone is prohibited unless authorized by the captain of the port of Baltimore. Vessels already at berth, mooring or anchor are not required to depart the security zone.
DHS Opens Headquarters on St. Elizabeths Campus
Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano and General Services Administration (GSA) Administrator Dan Tangherlini has officially opened the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Consolidated Headquarters campus with a ceremonial ribbon cutting at the newly built U.S. Coast Guard Headquarters building. The opening of the new facility marks the completion of the first phase of the consolidation project on St. Elizabeths west campus. “Today, we take a major step forward in making our ‘One DHS’ vision a reality,” said Secretary Napolitano. “We are proud to provide the U.S. Coast Guard with a facility that will support the important work they do for the American people,” said GSA Administrator Dan Tangherlini.
Coastal Properties Managing Diamond Teague
Coastal Properties Management (CPM) added a new facility to its management group with a contract awarded by Washington D.C. to manage the newly opened $8m marine terminal at Nationals Park named Diamond Teague Marine Terminal & Park. Operations at the Diamond Teague Terminal, which commenced in September, include water taxi and commercial vessel service from National Harbor Marina in Md., and Old Town Alexandria, Va. for all Nationals home games and concerts at National Park.
MSC Observes National Maritime Day

Brewer III, USN, commander, MSC, hosted the ceremony that was attended by former Maryland congresswoman Helen Bentley as well as current and former members of the maritime service and military.
Old Navy Yard Revitalization Begins
Forest City Washington broke ground recently on The Yards, a 42-acre redevelopment on property that used be part of the Washington Navy Yard. The area, formerly called Southeast Federal Center, will be home to 2,700 residential units, 1.8 million square feet of office and retail space. D.C. officials estimate that the project will have 3,700 residents and add 7,700 jobs, which would generate $450 million in annual paychecks. The project will create a $42m public park on 5.5 acres fronting the Anacostia River. Forest City will construct the park, designed by M. Paul Friedberg and Partners. NOAA Awards Grants for Community-Based Debris Projects
$1,029,368 in grants for 12 community-based marine debris prevention and removal projects. These projects are funded by the NOAA Marine Debris Program and administered by the NOAA Restoration Center. The program provides financial and technical assistance to local groups to clean-up marine debris, and prevent its introduction into coastal environments. The Marine Debris Program awarded $333,868 in the northeast region to support marine debris removal, research and education. (GIS) analysis to target the source of marine debris in New Hampshire and will investigate the effectiveness of marine debris removal activities. The State of Rhode Island, Clean the Bay, and other local partners will remove more than 500 tons of debris from Narragansett Bay.
