Offshore Gas Safety atop the Agenda for Martek Marine

Gas Sampling System (Photo: Martek Marine)

Maritime industry technology specialists Martek Marine say it is setting the bar high when it comes to offshore gas safety. The company has developed a first-of-its-kind gas sampling system for a new moored floating production unit, which forms part of the Jangkrik Complex gas fields development in Indonesia. The system has been developed to dramatically improve offshore crew safety through the use of advanced gas sampling technology. The worst offshore disaster in history, the Piper disaster on July 6…

New Coating Thickness Measurement Tool

Oxford Instruments has introduced a new tool for coating thickness measurement and materials analysis. This new model, the MAXXI 6, is based on X-ray fluorescence technology. It encompasses a high resolution silicon drift detector (SDD), measuring thinnest coatings down to thenanoscale and element composition at trace level to ensure high quality control for up to date industrial standards. The MAXXI 6 is made in Taunusstein, Germany and approved by the PTB (Physikalisch Technische Bundesanstalt) for the highest level of radiation safety. Coating thickness measurement based on X-ray fluorescence (XRF) is a widely accepted and industry-proven analytical technique, offering easy to use, fast and non-destructive analysis requiring little to no sample preparation.

Castrol Challenges Scavenge Drain Oil Analysis Methodology

Concerns over corrosive wear risk in cross-head engines led Castrol Marine to question the rigour of some widely used scavenge drain oil analysis (SDA ) techniques. Factors influencing scavenge drain oil characteristics include fuel sulphur level, cylinder oil BN level, system oil contamination and operating profile. Accuracy is critical in SDA interpretation, not least because it supports feed-rate assumptions that are critical to cylinder oil performance, Castrol said. “It is not possible to analyze results accurately without comprehensive knowledge of the fuel oil, the new and used system oil, feed rates and operational data collected from the engine at the time of sampling,” said Paul Harrold, Castrol Marine Technology Manager.

Tracerco Targets Fuel Fraud

New device will help combat multi billion dollar global crime. Tracerco, part of the Johnson Matthey group, has developed what it touts to be the world’s first fully portable, lightweight and rugged system to test for tampering in fuel. Dubbed Nemesis, the company claims it is the only analyser of its kind, and is the latest addition to Tracerco’s range of Product Assurance technologies and is expected to play a significant role in the global fight against fuel adulteration, substitution and smuggling. Fuel adulteration is a global problem in both the developed world and emerging economies, driven by significant price differentials between subsidised or rebated fuels, non-rebated fuels and industrial solvents.

Krystallon Launch New System for Measuring Emissions

September 25, 2006: Krystallon, a world leader in emissions solutions specialising in abatement technology for the commercial shipping industry, has developed a new emissions monitoring system for use in the marine industry. The combination of quantum cascade laser (QCL) technology, a system designed for detecting drugs, explosives and hazardous compounds, and Krystallon’s seawater scrubbing technology, will allow operators to measure SOx and NOx and CO2 emissions more quickly, accurately and cost-effectively. The system, developed by Cascade, uses QCL technology to detect gases in the air. The electronic 'nose' detects gases emitted, producing a chemical 'fingerprint' to identify the substance.
