Cyclone Tauktae: Rescue Op Launched for 81 Offshore Oil Workers after Barge Sinks off Mumbai

The Indian Navy mounted a massive air and sea rescue mission on Tuesday for 81 missing oil workers and crew whose barge sank in heavy seas following a powerful cyclone that tore up the west coast of the country.Around 180 of those on board the barge were rescued from the water as it sank off Mumbai. Efforts had started to move crew stuck on a second barge that was driven aground by the storm, the navy said."There are waves of 20 to 25 feet, the winds are high and the visibility is low," said navy spokesman Vivek Madhwal.

Sri Lanka Allows Fire-hit Tanker New Diamond to Sail to UAE

Sri Lanka has allowed a fire-hit supertanker to sail to the United Arab Emirates, where its oil cargo would be transferred to another ship for further supplies to Indian Oil Corp, officials said.The approval for the ship to leave Sri Lankan waters has been given by the maritime rescue coordination center and it is likely to sail towards the UAE, Captain Indika De Silva said."Two navy ships are shadowing the tanker until it leaves Sri Lanka's 200 mile exclusive economic zone," De Silva added.In early September, the New Diamond caught fire after a blast in its engine room.

India Launches 4th Scorpene Class Submarine Vela

Indian Navy's fourth stealth Scorpene class Submarine Vela was launched yesterday (May 06, 2019)for trials at the Mazagon Dock Limited (MDL) in Mumbai.The launch of the submarine is a major boost for the underwater capability of the Indian Navy, claimed a press release. Apeejay Shipping expands fleet

India's  Apeejay Shipping said it has acquired a new Japanese 76,602 MT DWT Gearless Panamax vessel to take its fleet size to nine. The ship has been renamed APJ Kabir Anand. The expansion schedule of Apeejay Shipping has seen the company acquire 3 Gearless Panamax vessels since September of last year and increase its fleet capacity by 2,27,311 MT DWT. This takes the fleet size to 9 with a DWT of 5, 94, 558. “This is a good time to own quality assets. A positive movement in the freight market due to general increase in demand as a result of growth in world economy and a drop in the supply, freight market is expected to be favourable for the industry in the coming years.

Indian Navy Decommissions INS Nirbhik, INS Nirghat

The Indian Naval Ships Nirbhik and Nirghat have been decommissioned at Naval Dockyard, Mumbai, after a glorious 30 and 28 years respectively in the service of the nation. The solemn ceremony involved traditional lowering of the ensign and commissioning pendants with playing of ‘Last Post’. The Chief Guest for the ceremony was Rear Admiral R B Pandit, Flag Officer Commanding Western Fleet, who had commanded Nirghat earlier. Cdr V R Naphade, (Retd) and Commodore S Mampully, (Retd), the commissioning Commanding Officers of Nirbhik and Nirghat respectively were the Guests of Honour. These ships of Killer squadron are inheritors of a proud legacy as their original avatars were flag bearers of the naval offensive action on Karachi Harbour during Indo-Pak war in 1971.

Tarbit Shipping, Martech Systems Pact to Implement SERTICA

Swedish tanker company Tarbit Shipping has signed a deal with Martech Systems to manage data structuring and implementation of the SERTICA software package from Logimatic on two ships under construction at a shipyard in Turkey. Earlier this year, Logimatic secured Martech Systems as an implementation partner for SERTICA. Martech Systems offers services such as data structuring, data implementation, data collecting and data entry, and crew training for SERTICA. India Earmarks $7.1 bln to Expand, Modernise Major Ports

Expansion, modernization and up-gradation of Major Ports in India is an ongoing process to keep the ports abreast with new technologies and also to promote trade and cargo. 62 Public–private partnership (PPP) Projects with an investment of Rs.49,049 crore ($7.1 bn) are under implementation and operation. For the year 2016-17, 33 projects with an investment of Rs.9,845 crore have been taken up. Port Master Plans for 12 major ports have been prepared keeping in view the requirements for cargo handling till 2035. A total of 142 Port Modernization projects have been identified in the Master Plans. These identified projects will be taken up for implementation in phases.

Great Eastern Shipping Q2 Profit Falls About 24 Pct

Great Eastern Shipping  (GES) Company posted a 23.9 per cent decline in consolidated net profit at Rs 268.7 crore ($40 million) for the second quarter ended September 30, 2016, reports PTI. The company had posted a consolidated net profit after tax of Rs 353.5 crore in the corresponding quarter of previous fiscal, Great Eastern Shipping said in a BSE filing. GE Shipping took a delivery of a Secondhand Capesize Dry Bulk Carrier (Year built: 2011) named “Jag Anand” of DWT 179250 MT on July 14, 2016. Mumbai Port's Container Terminal to handle Dry Bulk Cargo

Mumbai Port Trust has allowed berthing of dry bulk cargo vessel at its OCT (Offshore Container) Terminal on trial basis following persuasion by members of Mumbai and Nhava Sheva Ship Agents Association to overcome congestion. The two vessels that were allowed to berth at the OCT Terminal were MV Julia Oldendroff and MV Interlink Fidelity. Welcoming the initiative by Mumbai Port to allow berthing of dry bulk vessels at the OCT Terminal, Captain Vivek Anand, President, MANSA said, “We appreciate the approach by Mumbai Port for taking a pro-active step towards ease of doing business. It may be recalled that in December last year, MANSA had sought berthing facilities at the Offshore Container Terminal for higher dimensional vessels carrying large parcels of pulses, steel and general cargo.

G E Shipping Acquires Bulk Carrier

The Great Eastern Shipping Company Ltd. (G E Shipping) took delivery of a Secondhand Capesize Dry Bulk Carrier “Jag Anand” (2011 built) of about 179,250 dwt. The company had contracted to buy the vessel in June 2016. With the inclusion of the vessel, the Company’s current fleet stands at 34 vessels, comprising 23 tankers (7 crude carriers, 14 product tankers, 2 LPG carriers) and 11 dry bulk carriers (1 Capesize, 5 Kamsarmax, 5 Supramax) with an average age of 9.6 years aggregating 2.67 mn dwt.
