Australia’s Portland to be Renewable Maritime Fuels Hub

Australia’s Victorian Government is backing a new feasibility study that could see Portland become home to one of Australia’s first green shipping fuel production hubs.Minister for Regional Development Harriet Shing announced the new study for a renewable fuel manufacturing hub in the portside city, with A$500,000 invested through the Labor Government’s Portland Diversification Fund.The feasibility study will be led by Portland H2 – a subsidiary of HAMR Energy – towards establishing a plant converting plantation forestry residue to green methanol.

Methanol Bunkering Gaining Interest Among Global Players

Denmark's Maersk said on Monday it has secured fuel for the world's first container vessel able to run on carbon-neutral methanol for its inaugural journey.Interest in methanol as an alternative fuel for bunkering has grown in the shipping industry, which seeks to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.Below is a list of key upcoming methanol bunkering-related projects by companies and ports:COMPANIES:*A.P. Robert Allan Ltd Designs ATB Convoys for Aliança Navegação e Logística

Australia Orders Shipowner to Recover Lost Containers

Hamburg, India Sea Trade Up by 17%

In the 2019 first half, 106,000 TEU - 20-ft standard containers - were handled in Hamburg on direct services with Indian ports, a gain of 17 percent. Global Ship Lease Bags New TC with CMA CGM

Containership lessor Global Ship Lease, announced a new time charter with ANL, a wholly owned subsidiary of CMA CGM, for the 2003-built, 2,207 TEU containership GSL Keta (formerly Delmas Keta).The containership charter owner informed that the new charter, commencing on or around November 20, 2018, is for a period of between seven and 10 months (at charterer’s option) at a rate of $8,450 per day, up from $7,800 per day under the preceding charter.The company incorporated in the Marshall Islands has also exercised options to extend the existing charters of the 2002-built, 2,207 TEU Marie Delmas and Kumasi to CMA CGM through December 31, 2019, at a rate of $9,800 per day.

CMA CGM's Integration of NOL

After successfully acquiring a controlling interest in NOL, CMA CGM has consolidated the Singapore-based company since 14 June, says a press release from the company. Singapore’s Neptune Orient Lines (NOL) is the parent company of container carrier APL. As part of the NOL integration process, CMA CGM reviewed the portfolio of brands deployed on its various lines and concluded that only two brands should be used on each trade. By 30 June, the total stake had risen to nearly 93%. Since that date, a compulsory acquisition process has been initiated, which will result in CMA CGM owning all of the company's outstanding shares. Subsequently, as previously announced, NOL will be delisted.

Rickmers Maritime in Red

Rickmers Trust Management (Rickmers Maritime) suffered a loss of USD15.7 million for the second quarter ended 30 June 2015 from a profit of USD16 million in 2Q14. Rickmers Maritime recorded a net loss after tax of US$15.7 million in 2Q2015, compared to a net profit of US$16.0 million in 2Q2014, due mainly to the non-cash recognition of a US$2.8 million goodwill impairment, and US$16.8 million provision for vessel impairment as market charter rates are still below historical averages. As a result of these impairments, Rickmers Maritime registered a net loss of US$8.6 million in 1H2015. Excluding the impact of the impairments totalling US$19.6 million, the Trust would have been profitable in both 2Q2015 and 1H2015, with net profit of US$4.0 million and US$11.0 million respectively.

Shipper Fined for Dumping Garbage in the Great Barrier Reef

The master and owners of the Hong Kong registered bulk carrier ANL Kardinia have been prosecuted for illegally dumping garbage in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. Prosecuted by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA), One Armania Shipping Ltd. and the master of ANL Kardinia were found guilty on July 20 in the Townsville Magistrates Court on one charge each of illegally disposing of garbage under the Protection of the Sea (Prevention of Pollution from Ships) Act 1983. The illegal discharge took place on February 13, 2015 and was detected by an AMSA Inspector during a routine Port State Control inspection in Brisbane on February 16, 2015.

Massive Rent Hike at Port of Melbourne

The Port of Melbourne Corporation has told DP World Australia that it wants to increase rent at the terminal by up by 800 per cent of the current amount, reports local media. It also comes as the Victorian government prepares the Port of Melbourne for sale. The move by the Victorian Government has sparked warnings of job cuts as well as economic damage to the state. The trucking industry fears it may have to carry much of the weight of the possible hefty rent hike. The port currently charges about $40 million dollars a year in rent to DP World and Asciano. It is understood that DP World has previously paid about $16 per square metre and the increase will take it to $120 per square metre.

Container Ship breaks Down off Essex Coast

Lifeboats from Walton and Frinton, and the Harwich have been called out to a container ship ANL Warringa off the coast of Essex which had been reported to be drifting in a major shipping lane.   It was reported to be drifting in the North Sea, 20 miles (32 miles) off the Essex coast, in the key route between Hamburg and the East Coast ports.   The 260 metre-long Warringa has managed to get an anchor down, not far from a wind turbine. The engineers on-board are trying to re-start the engines of the 50,000 tonne container ship.   BBC News reports that one lifeboat remains on the scene awaiting the arrival of commercial tugs to tow the ship to port. Engineers on board are trying to restart the engines.

CMA CGM profits up 43%

French container line operator CMA CGM has announced that its 2014 net consolidated profits rose by 43% over the previous year to USD584 million thanks to a growth in volume and significantly reduced costs. Consolidated operating revenue for the company increased by 5.3% in 2014, compared with the previous year, to $16.7bn on an 8.1% volume increase to 12.2m teu, which CMA CGM said was mainly attributable to east-west gains. Volumes carried rose by 8.1% year on year (y/y) to 12.2 million teu and revenues increased 5.3% to USD16.7 billion. CMA CGM Continues Expansion, Confirms Profits

The Board of Directors of CMA CGM Group, the world’s third largest container shipping company, met under the chairmanship of Jacques R. Saadé, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, to review the financial statements for the second quarter of 2014. In the second quarter, in a market environment shaped by diverging developments in different regions, CMA CGM reported its consolidated revenue amounted to $4.2 billion, up 3.7% year-on-year, volumes carried increased by 8% to 3.1 million TEUs, and average revenue per TEU decreased by 3.9% over the period.
