Maersk Eyes Greek Ports

APM Terminals, part of A.P. Moller-Maersk, said it is interested in buying into the Greek ports Piraeus and Thessaloniki, slated for privatization if a new bailout deal is agreed between Athens and the European Union, reports Reuters. Maersk will participate in the bidding process for two of the largest Greek ports – Piraeus and Thessaloniki – after the country’s Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras brought the sale of the ports on the table in today’s bailout proposal, Bloomberg reports. "Yes, we are interested in the Greek ports of Piraeus and Thessaloniki and are pursuing them as part of our growth plans. Our interest has been consistent throughout the economic and political cycles of the country," Francois Delenclos, Vice President of Business Development at APM Terminals, said.

COSCO Piraeus Pier III Inaugurated

The Inauguration of the Expansion of Pier III of COSCO Piraeus Container Terminal(PCT) was held yesterday. Premier Li Keqiang of China sent a congratulatory message, which was read by Mr. Zou Xiaoli, Chinese Ambassador to Greece during the ceremony. Prime Minister Antonis Samaras of Greece attended the event and made congratulatory remarks. Executive Vice President Sun Jiakang of COSCO Group delivered a speech and cut the ribbon together with the Prime Minister and Ambassador. In his message, Premier Li Keqiang said that China and Greece are enjoying all-round and rapid development of bilateral relations. “Our political mutual trust is growing, and our practical cooperation is yielding new results. IMF to Resume Greece Bailout Talks after Election

The International Monetary Fund will resume bailout talks with Greece once a new government is in place after next month's snap general election, IMF spokesman Gerry Rice said in a statement on Monday, noting that Athens faces no immediate funding needs. "Discussions with the Greek authorities on the completion of the sixth review of the program that is being supported by an Extended Arrangement will resume once a new government is in place, in consultation with the European Commission and the European Central Bank," the emailed statement said. Prime Minister Antonis Samaras announced plans for a general election on Jan. 25 after lawmakers rejected his candidate for president in a vote that will automatically lead to the dissolution of parliament.

Turkish PM Calls for Deal with Greek Cypriots Over Energy Deposits

Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu called on Friday for an agreement over exploiting hydrocarbon deposits in the eastern Mediterranean, an issue that caused the breakdown of peace talks between Greek and Turkish Cypriots in October. Greek Cypriots say Turkey sent a research vessel to collect seismic data in disputed waters off the divided island of Cyprus where the Nicosia government was also exploring. The comments came during a visit by Davutoglu to Athens, as part of a two-day annual event to boost ties between the Greece and Turkey, two neighbouring countries have long been embroiled in disputes over territory, energy exploration and Cyprus. "We will continue with the bilateral talks ... we need to go deeper and find a solution.

Egypt, Greece, Cyprus Pledge More Energy Cooperation

Egypt, facing its worst power crisis in decades, on Saturday pledged greater energy cooperation with Greece and Cyprus, a diplomatic move that opened up the possibility of progress in talks to import natural gas from Cyprus. The meeting in Cairo between Anastasiades, Egyptian President Abdelfattah al-Sisi and Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras demonstrated deepening ties between the three states, who are challenging Turkey's efforts to chart gas deposits in areas of the east Mediterrean claimed by Cyprus. The emerging alliance fits Egypt's interests well. Its relations with Turkey quickly soured last year after Sisi toppled President Mohamed Mursi of the Muslim Brotherhood, an Islamist movement supported by Turkey's government. Egypt badly needs natural gas imports.

China to Invest in Greek Transport Infrastructure

China wants to invest in Greek airports and railways as well as the busiest port, officials said on Friday, as the country where the euro debt crisis began seeks a role as China's gateway into Europe. China-Greece Port Collaboration Applauded

Greek President Karolos saw successful cooperation with COSCO in the Port of Piraeus as a pointer towards further bilateral collaboration. The Greek president voiced his thoughts during a visit to the Chinese company's Piraeus Container Terminal (PCT) in Athens reports China Daily. Papoulias expressed confidence that with COSCO's success and following Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras' official visit to China two weeks ago, more Chinese companies will come to invest in Greece. Citing statements to Greek news agency AMNA, China Daily reports that Greek Shipping Minister Costis Moussouroulis who accompanied the president on the visit, thought that the company's new investment projects verified the strategic position the port of Piraeus holds in the global sea transport system.
