ABS has granted Approval in Principle (AIP) for the Seatransporter-DF, a dual-fuel design concept developed by Algoship Designers Ltd. of Nassau, Bahamas. The design has the capability to accommodate multiple engine types as well as Type-C or membrane containment systems for liquefied natural gas (LNG) fuel. “Technically innovative designs that advance the use of LNG as fuel will play an increasingly important role in the marine sector, and ABS is working alongside industry to enable this critical technological advancement,” said ABS Executive Vice President for Global Marine, Dr. Kirsi Tikka.

Shipbuilding for the Arctic

The Arctic region has a huge potential in terms of unexploited natural wealth and resources, though it accounts for a small area on the earth’s surface. Many countries, other than the eight countries which lay either completely or partially in the Arctic region, are interested in exploring the natural resources available in this region, and for various other economic, strategic and geopolitical reasons. In addition, moving cargo from the west to the east (and vice versa) in the northern hemisphere can be undertaken through the Arctic region at lower cost. For any nation to have control over the Arctic, it will have to establish its physical presence in this region. Such presence can be demonstrated by reaching this ice / water bound zone through ships.

Feature: Series Design in the New Regs Environment

For a half century, GTR Campbell has offered a turnkey ship creation service, applying a unique project-oriented philosophy that turns conflict of interest into mutual interest. New regulations may have changed a design's lifespan but not the series concept. Today, Antony Prince is internationally recognized as the President of GTR Campbell Marine Consultants and successor to the legacy of the company founder, famed naval architect George Campbell. But 10 years ago, Prince was just a man with a plan and some mighty big shoes to fill. Prince had been George Campbell's close friend and associate for over 20 years. In 1990, the aging Campbell turned the company over to his protégé, cautioning that, for a consultancy, reputation was not easily transferred from one man to another.

Standards for A New Era

One of the most respected names in the development of vessel designs suited to volume demand and series production, and still widely identified with the 'Liberty' ship replacement era, GTR Campbell Marine Consultants has fostered new links with the industry in China. The recent opening of new headquarters for the Canadian firm and its associated company Algoship Designers in Nassau, Bahamas, was accompanied by a first deal for the latest addition to its standard ship portfolio, a 700-dwt inter-island ferry. While the bulk carrier bloodline is perpetuated in a host of new projects involving Chinese and South Korean yards, the extension of the GTR Campbell concept to the ferry domain involves a combined passenger and cargo carrier dubbed the Fiesta type.
