Russia’s largest independent natural gas producer and LNG operator, Novatek received the first shipment of cargo for its Arctic LNG 2 project at the Utrenneye field.The nuclear container ship Sevmorput owned by Rosatomflot loaded the cargo and arrived at the site on March 26, said a statement from Rosatomflot.It took the Sevmorput five days of sailing to reach the Gulf of Ob, it said. The 260 meter long vessel on 21st March sailed out from Arkhangelsk fully loaded with construction goods for Novatek’s new natural gas project.“The transfer from Arkhangelsk went in a regular mode and took five days,” said Andrey Smirnov, director of shipping for Atomflot FSUE.

The nuclear-powered, 260 meter long, 33980 tons deadweight 'Sevmorput' this week sailed from Murmansk to Arkhangelsk where it is to pick up more than 17,000 tons of construction goods.The lighter aboard ship (LASH) system carrier of FSUE Atomflot, the world’s only ship of its kind, will deliver thousands of tons of construction materials to the Arctic LNG 2 project in peninsula Gydan.At the port of Arkhangelsk, the ship will be loaded with pallets, containers and equipment. Upon completion of the loading works, nuclear-powered container carrier will proceed to the Utrenneye field on the Gydan peninsula in the Gulf of Ob.The Sevmorput crew will ensure cargo delivery and unloading onto the shore ice.

A set of agreements between PAO Sovcomflot (SCF Group), Rosneft, the State Transport Leasing Company (STLC) and Zvezda Shipbuilding Complex will see the construction of five Aframax tankers for the export of crude oil and oil products from 2021. The 114,000 dwt vessels will be built by Zvezda jointly with technology partner Hyundai Heavy Industries (Republic of Korea). A meeting of the Arctic Economic Council (AEC) was held in Saint Petersburg on the premises of SCF Arctic, a subsidiary of Sovcomflot Group (PAO Sovcomflot), on 7-8 February 2017. The meeting was attended by business community representatives from Russia, Finland, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Canada, and the USA, as well as several organizations of indigenous peoples of the Arctic: Gwich'in Council International, Aleut International Association, Arctic Athabaskan Council, Inuit Circumpolar Association, and RAIPON (Russian Association of Indigenous Peoples of the North). This event was the first ever meeting held by the AEC in the Russian Federation.

Arkhangelsk Trawl Fleet (ATF) has entered into contract with Vyborg Shipyard for the construction of a series of fishing trawlers. The shipbuilding contract, signed at the the International Forum "The Fishing Fleet - New Impulse to Development" in Murmansk in March 2016, entered into force in November 2016. For ATF, Vyborg Shipyard, a group member of United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC), will build four "turnkey" medium-size trawlers project ST 116 XL to be operated in the North Basin. Each vessel of the new generation will have on board a fillet factory, a fish meal plant, equipment for fish oil production, a can factory and will be equipped with cargo cranes with high capacity as well as a cargo trawl complex of the latest generation.

The Norwegian military has released pictures taken by surveillance aircraft of a fleet of Russian warships sailing in international waters off the coast of Norway and reported to be heading to Syria. Photos of the vessels, which include the aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov and the Pyotr Velikiy battle cruiser, were taken near Andoya island, in northern Norway on Monday. A spokesman for the Norwegian military intelligence service said the country's armed forces frequently releases such footage, while newspaper VG quoted General Morten Haga Lunde, head of the service, as saying the eight ships involved "will probably play a role in the deciding battle for Aleppo".

British and Russian World War Two veterans gathered on Wednesday in Arkhangelsk, 75 years to the day since Britain's first Arctic convoy of military supplies steamed into the northern port. Britain's Princess Anne has been among those attending events honouring those who sailed, and the thousands who died, protecting supply convoys dispatched to aid the Soviet Union against Nazi Germany. On Aug. 31, 1941, two months after Hitler's surprise attack on his erstwhile ally prompted Josef Stalin to seek support from a beleaguered Britain, the first convoy, codenamed "Dervish", sailed into Arkhangelsk, or Archangel, after a 10-day crossing.

On October 30, 2015, at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut, the heads of eight agencies fulfilling the functions of Coast Guard of Canada, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, the Russian Federation, Sweden, and the United States signed a Joint Statement formally establishing the Arctic Coast Guard Forum (ACGF). The ACGF is an independent, informal, operationally-driven organization. It is not bound by treaty, but will work in cooperation with the Arctic Council to foster safe, secure, and environmentally responsible maritime activity in the Arctic region.

The exhibition "Nature poles" will be opened in the North Sea Museum in Arkhangelsk on December 22. This month Damen Shipyards Group launched ice class Trailing Suction Hopper Dredgers TSHD 2000 for Russian Port Agency FSUE “Rosmorport”. Song Thu Corporation shipyard in Da Nang, Vietnam is building the Damen TSHD 2000 under Russian Maritime Register of Shipping (RMRS). Following delivery, the 2,000 m³ Severnaya Dvina will maintain navigational depths and provide safe shipping in the Arkhangelsk Seaport basin and approaches. The launching ceremony on 9 November was attended by the Consul-General of the Russian Federation in Da Nang Andrey Brovarets, FSUE “Rosmorport” General Director Andrey Tarasenko, representatives from RMRS, Damen and from Damen's business cooperation Song Thu Corporation shipyard. FSUE “Rosmorport” awarded the contract to Damen following an open tender in 2013.

Firefighters at Zvyozdochka shipyard in Russia's northern province of Arkhangelsk partially flooded a nuclear-powered submarine to extinguish a blaze that started aboard the vessel. The vessel - classified as Oscar-II by NATO - is a cruise missile type sub which carries nuclear material and has two reactors aboard. There were no weapons on board of 949 Antei submarine, the vessel's nuclear reactor had been shut down prior to the blaze and nobody was hurt, said the state-owned United Shipbuilding Corporation which runs the Zvyozdochka shipyard where the 155-metre (500 ft) 949 Antei submarine was being repaired. A nuclear submarine caught fire in a shipyard in Russia's northern province of Arkhangelsk on Tuesday but there were no weapons on board, Russian news agencies reported. The Emergencies Ministry declined comment on the reports of the fire at the Zvyozdochka shipyard, where the agencies said the 155-metre-long (just over 500 feet) 949 Antei submarine was being repaired. There was no word of any casualties. "There is a fire on the submarine. We are fighting the fire now," a shipyard source told Interfax news agency. RIA quoted a spokesperson at the shipyard as saying there were no weapons on board the submarine. A source told TASS news agency the submarine's nuclear reactor had been shut down prior to the blaze.

Russia’s Sevmash shipyard will hold a groundbreaking ceremony for its next generation Project fifth Yasen-M multirole nuclear submarine, the Arkhangelsk, on March 19. The Yasen-class subs are touted as the most advanced nuclear-powered multipurpose underwater craft in the Russian Navy. According to local media reports, the Navy Commander Admiral Viktor Chirkov has ordered that the submarine be named Arkhangelsk. This missile carrier will become the fifth Yasen Project multirole nuclear submarine, developed by St. Petersburg's Malakhit naval design bureau. The construction of a new vessel of dredging fleet, project TSHD 2000, has been launched to the RS class in Da Nang, Vietnam. The keel laying ceremony was held at Song Thu Corporation shipyard November 21, 2014. It was attended by Andrey Tarasenko, General Director of FSUE Rosmorport, and Pavel Shikhov, RS Chief Operating Officer. The ship has been designed by Damen Shipyards Gorinchem. RS class notation: KM Ice1 R1 AUT2 hopper dredger. A new vessel of dredging fleet is intended for extraction and removal of spoil, dredging of fairways, channels and roads to keep waterways safe.

The Russian state-owned stake in Murmansk Shipping Company (MSCO) will be privatised by the end of 2013. MSCO assets are composed of fleets of three shipping companies: Murmansk Shipping Company (Murmansk), Northern Sea Shipping Company (Arkhangelsk) and Northern River Shipping Company (Arkhangelsk). The company handles up to 80% of all cargo transported via the Northern Sea Route, reports Barents Nova. Privatisation of a state-owned 25.5% stake will be completed by the end of 2013 reports Barents Nova citing a recent meeting of the Transport Ministry.

The Russian Navy celebrates its professional holiday by putting two new submarines into service and expects a new warship in the fall and several additional ships for its Black Sea Fleet off the Crimean coast in the next three years, reports official news agency Ria Novosti. A multipurpose nuclear submarine Severodvinsk and a Borei-class strategic nuclear submarine Alexander Nevsky will be put into service, with more laid down in the series of the ships. Nuclear submarines Krasnoyarsk and Knyaz Oleg are expected to be laid down at the industrial base of the Sevmash shipyard in the city of Severodvinsk, Arkhangelsk region on Sunday. Two more submarines, Novorossiysk and a lead frigate Admiral Grigorovich are being tested, with the lead mine sweeper Alexander Obukhov floated out.

The research and development expedition to investigate ice and metocean conditions in the Russian arctic organized by The Arctic Research and Design Center (the Rosneft and ExxonMobil JV) with the support of Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute experts has started in the White sea. Scientific research vessel Akademik Tryoshnikov departed the Arkhangelsk port to move along the route from the Kara Sea to the Chukchee Sea, virtually along the whole of the Russian Arctic coast. The comprehensive research expedition will last for 57 days. It will involve experts of Roshydromet, All-Russian Research Institute of Geology and Mineral Resources of the World Ocean named after academician Igor Gramberg and Institute of Geography of the Russsian Academy of Sciences.

The works carried out to deepen the approach channel to the Port of Sabetta on the Gulf of Ob in the Russian Far North have resulted in the removal of  previous restrictions on vessel call for large ships, including nuclear-powered icebreakers, report Arctic-Info. Citing a report by the press service of the Arkhangelsk branch of Rosmorport Arctic-Info report that last year the company implemented a significant amount of dredging works at the navigation approach channel in the Gulf of Ob and operational waters of the seaport.

Deputy Minister of Transport Victor Olerskyz informed that the Northern Sea Route will be administrated from Moscow. The new headquarters for the Northern Sea Route (NSR) will open in Moscow on January 28 2013. A representative office may be opened in Arkhangelsk later, according to the 'Barents Observer'. The Northern Sea Route is becoming a more and more important route for transportation of cargo between Europe and Asia. 2012 was a record season both in relation to the amount of cargo and the number of vessels. 46 vessels sailed the route in 2012, compared to 34 in 2011 and only four in 2010. The total cargo transported on the NSR last year was 1 261 545 tons – a 53 percent increase from 2011, when 820 789 tons was shipped on the route.
