VT Halter Marine, Northrop Grumman Team

VT Halter Marine Inc. has teamed with Northrop Grumman Corporation’s Electronic Systems sector to bid for the U.S. Army Tank-automotive and Armaments Command’s (TACOM) Theater Support Vessel (TSV) project. The TSV will support the Army’s transformation goal of deploying a combat-ready brigade anywhere in the world within 96 hours and will reduce support requirements for large-scale, onshore arrivals. The TSV will allow the Army to rapidly respond to crisis situations by arriving quickly and landing at ports that are too shallow or under-equipped for conventional vessels. With the capacity to transport more than 350 troops plus gear, and the capability to load and unload troops and equipment in as little as 20 minutes…

Opportunities Plentiful

In considering activities in the U.S. maritime industry for the short and long term, it is unwise to start the conversation without a mention of the patrol and defense needs of the country in the mounting effort to secure nearly 95,000 miles of coastline. As plans emerge during the coming weeks, months and years, the only certainty is increased funding for a variety of ships, boats and marine-borne electronic surveillance systems geared toward meeting and defeating enemy attacks, both large and small. An embodiment of the push for new technology is embodied in the activities of companies such as Larry Wieber's Aluminum Chambered Boats Inc. (ACB) in Bellingham, Wash.

Propulsion Updates

Geislinger GmbH recently delivered its biggest torsional elastic coupling — a coupling with an outer diameter of 2.8-m and a weight of 36.3 tons. The coupling will be built into the drive line of a VLCC tanker, with an energy saving counter-rotating double propeller. More than 2,000 single parts were produced in the Geislinger works in Bad St. Leonhard and assembled in the works in Salzburg. The coupling transmits half of the 27,160 KW engine power at 74 rpm and in this way protects the gear box, which changes the direction of rotation for the backwards running propeller. This causes the energy of the swirling water in the gushing of the propeller to be used and therefore the degree of effectiveness is increased by about 14 percent.

Australian Maritime Report:Speed to Spare

The Australian marine industry is noted for building large, fast, efficient vessels, primarily for commercial ferry purposes. But as coastal patrol needs grow, so too do the military applications for these amazing breeds. Following is a brief review of some of the recent news from Down Under. Hobart-based shipbuilder Incat is emerging from a challenging year with news of not one, but two orders for the United States military. Just three weeks after the U.S. Army Tank-Automotive and Armaments Command (TACOM) announced the lease of their first Theater Support for the Army from Bollinger/Incat USA. Military Sealift Command (MSC), Washington, D.C., also announced a contract for a 322-ft. (98-m) craft from Bollinger/Incat USA, to support U.S. Navy Mine Warfare Command.
