The Republic of Armenia has become the latest member of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), following the deposit of an instrument of acceptance of the Convention on the International Maritime Organization with the Secretary-General of the United Nations on January 19, 2018. With Armenia’s acceptance of the convention, the number of IMO member states stands at 173, with a further three associate members.

APM Terminals Poti has added two Azimuth Stern-Drive (ASD) tugboats from the Maersk Transport & Logistics sister brand Svitzer, to significantly improve harsh weather operating capabilities and night time navigation through the entrance channel. New Svitzer tugboats can operate in harsh weather conditions, offer safer, stronger services for night time entrance channel navigation. Speaking at the 4th Annual Black Sea Ports and Shipping Conference 2015 on May 29th on the subject of Black Sea Ports as agents of economic growth for the region, APM Terminals Poti Deputy Managing Director Joseph Crowley discussed the advantages of Poti Seaport as the prominent gateway for Black Sea, Mediterranean and Central Asian trade. “While recent World Bank economic growth forecasts for the broader Caucasus region have been reduced, APM Terminals is committed to our ongoing investment in Poti Seaport to anticipate and satisfy the future demand potential” said Mr. Crowley, adding “this infrastructure investment into the port will help make future gateway volume growth possible, a major factor in Georgia’s growing presence as a global trading partner”.

The Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) officially starts functioning on January 1. The EEU unites Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Armenia, and Kyrgyzstan. The new economic union envisages free flow of capital, goods services, and workforce on a common market including over 170 million people, according to reports of the Bulgarian National Radio. The union operates through supranational and intergovernmental institutions. The supranational institutions are the Eurasian Commission (the executive body), the Court of the EEU (the judicial body) and the Eurasian Development Bank. National governments are usually represented by the Eurasian Commission's Council. The constituent states of the EEU are placed under binding laws and have equal representation within the union's executive and judicial bodies.

Federation of Freight Forwarders’ Associations in India (FFFAI) convened conference and a meeting at FFFAI – Mumbai office of its members with Mr. Ravi Capoor, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Commerce to brief members on International North South Transport Corridor (INSTC). FFFAI is doing a dry run study of the bottlenecks on the INSTC route. Mr. Ravi Capoor in his briefing said that there are 4 emerging markets in the world, namely ASEAN, LATIN, AFRICAN and CIS countries. Indian companies are trading with ASEAN, LATIN, AFRICAN, countries but till date their presence in CIS countries is not substantial. He said that after 1991 when integrated USSR collapsed, there was huge economic mayhem and during the same period simultaneously in India there was economic liberalization.

On the heels of the announcement that the Free Trade Agreement with Colombia will go into effect in May, Port Everglades and  the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport hosted a delegation of public officials from Colombia to discuss international trade and visit Broward County's seaport. Port Everglades is the top seaport in Florida for trade with Colombia, which totaled more than $1 billion in FY 2011, representing 54 percent of Colombian trade through all of Florida's seaports last year.

APM Terminals Poti in Georgia is Europe’s newest gateway to the Caucasus and Central Asia, projected to be among the pace-setters ineconomic development and trade growth. Poti, Georgia – In line with APM Terminals investment strategy in high growth markets, the company has announced the acquisition of an 80% share in Poti Sea Port, which is located on Georgia’s Black Sea coast. The shares have been bought from Ras Al Khaimah Investment Authority (RAKIA) of the United Arab Emirates.

The United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Carriage of Goods Wholly or Partly by Sea, known as the Rotterdam Rules, has received its 20th signature just one month after it first opened for signature. Niger became the 20th signatory to the Rotterdam Rules. The signing ceremony for the Convention was held in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, on 23 September 2009. Military Sealift Command oceanographic survey ship USNS Pathfinder kicked off its scheduled at-sea capabilities demonstration Sept. 7 after departing . During the at-sea demonstration, Pathfinder is searching for Soviet-flagged hospital ship SS Armenia which was sunk during World War II. Civilian surveyors from the U.S. Naval Oceanographic Office, Ukrainian sailors, surveyors and historians and a team of civilian oceanographers from the U.S.-based Institution for Exploration are conducting the search in Ukrainian territorial waters. Since the exact position of the wreckage is unknown, the Naval Oceanographic Office surveyors expect to use oceanographic tools such as a side-scan sonar and multi-beam sonar. This equipment uses sound pulses to locate possible shipwreck targets.

Military Sealift Command oceanographic survey ship USNS Pathfinder arrived in , , to pick up Ukrainian personnel and members of the U.S.-based Institute for Exploration for an upcoming at-sea capabilities demonstration with ’s Department of Underwater Heritage. In April 2008, the Ukranian government invited the U.S. Navy’s 6th Fleet to demonstrate U.S. Navy hydrographic survey capabilities and to help search for SS Armenia, a sunken, World War II Soviet hospital ship. During the at-sea demonstration, civilian surveyors from the Naval Oceanographic Office Institute for Exploration and Ukraine’s Department of Underwater Heritage will work together to search for the downed vessel.

West Africa's Cameroon retained the dubious honor of being viewed as the country most likely to take bribes in 1999 while Denmark remained squeaky clean, according to an independent report. Corruption watchdog Transparency International's 1999 report also showed that companies from China, which is seeking to join the World Trade Organization, were viewed as the most likely to pay bribes in order to win business overseas. The latest Corruption Perceptions Index showed that of the 99 countries tracked, only Denmark received a perfect 10 rating for the second year running, showing that investors, risk analysts and the public think the country and its public officials are clean. The survey ranks countries by scores ranging from 10 (highly clean) to zero (highly corrupt).
