CMA CGM Fitted with Marinestar Maneuvering System

Fugro Seastar AS announced that CMA CGM Marco Polo has been fitted with Marinestar maneuvering system to assist in berthing and navigation. The satellite aided navigation technology is based on composite GPS and GLONASS constellations and measures precise speeds at the bow and the stern together with quay distances to assist the vessel safely to the berth. The Marinestar system provides speed and heading information to a higher level of accuracy than conventional navigational aids such as doppler log and gyro compass. On behalf of CMA Ships, Mr. William BIEGUN, Navigation and Communication Engineer, commented, “Feedback from our Captains was that maneuvering giant container ships in confined port areas, required advanced positioning systems.

Multi-Function Navigation System Approved

The Marinestar Maneuvering System (Marinestar MS) designed by Fugro in Norway has been approved by the BSH marine test house in Germany as both a Speed and Distance Measuring Equipment (SDME) and Transmitting Heading Device (THD). This means that Marinestar MS can be installed as an alternative to a doppler speed log in order to meet the requirements of SOLAS for ships over 50,000 gross tons to have the ability to measure speed over the ground in both the forward and athwartships direction. The system can equally act as an alternative to one of the gyro compasses.

New Satellite Navigation Service from Fugro

Oslo based navigation specialist Fugro Seastar AS has announced the introduction of a new service: SeaSTAR G2. This new high performance navigation service combines the navigation satellites of both the American GPS constellation and the Russian GLONASS constellation, to produce a composite GPS/GLONASS position solution. The service utilizes Fugro’s own network of dual system reference stations to calculate ‘orbit and clock’ errors on a satellite by satellite basis for all 50…
