Improved Marine Mammal Transport Vessel Studied

Art Anderson Associates reported that it has completed Phase I of the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contract to evaluate the Stolkraft hull form as an alternative to the Navy’s 11-meter Rigid Inflatable Boat (RIB) in the transportation of marine mammals. This SBIR topic was issued to address the excessive slamming loads being experienced by Navy Special Clearance Team (NSCT-1) forces on their current 11-meter RIB. In Phase I, Art Anderson Associates reports, tests of an existing Stolkraft showed that it experienced lower vertical accelerations than the U.S. Navy 10-m RIB under similar test conditions. A concept design was also produced based on the NSCT-1 operational requirements established during the Phase I kick-off meeting.

Art Anderson Continues Seabasing Research

Art Anderson Associates has entered a new phase in one of its Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) contracts with the U.S. Navy. In this phase, Art Anderson Associates will work to optimize the speed and throughput of the company-developed High-Speed Lighterage vessel required by amphibious military operational scenarios. Guidance from the Navy and the results of the analysis will determine specific design parameters for the vessel, allowing Art Anderson Associates and the Navy to proceed with vessel engineering and design. Art Anderson Associates has been under contract to the Naval Facilities Command, Sealift Support Office for research and design of the Improved Navy Lighterage System (INLS).

Art Anderson Associates Wins 5-year NOAA Deal

Art Anderson Associates informs it has been awarded a five year Blanket Purchase Agreement (BPA) for program and project management as well as other services supporting the Marine Engineering Branch for oceanographic and fisheries research ships and small vessels operated by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Office of Marine Operations (OMAO). The agreement will allow NOAA to contract with Art Anderson Associates for integration and project management services including acquisition, program and mission management, technical writing, ship construction supervision services, post shakedown availability support and waterfront production oversight. The award is the second major BPA awarded to Art Anderson Associates this year from NOAA.

Art Anderson Associates Receives AWB Award

The Association of Washington Business (AWB) recently presented Art Anderson Associates with one of fifteen Better Workplace Awards, given to Washington businesses who demonstrate innovation in the areas of workplace safety, job training and advancement and benefit and compensation packages. The award was presented by Governor Christine Gregoire and AWB President Don Brunell at the Association’s 2007 Legislative Day, held on February 7th, 2007. The award was given specifically to recognize Art Anderson Associates for its benefits and compensation package. In order to help employees make better health care decisions, the company recently changed its health care plan to one that features a Health Savings Account combined with a high-deductible health plan.

All-Electric Ferry Development Underway

Art Anderson Associates and partner EESImarine have been developing concepts for an all-electric ferry and are now teaming to generate funding for the implementation of the concept for Skagit County’s Guemes Island-Anacortes passenger and car ferry replacement. After careful study of the Guemes Island Ferry route, Art Anderson Associates proposed to the Skagit County Board of Commissioners the all-electric ferry as a viable replacement for their aging ferry with additional benefits of reducing the lifecycle costs and environmental impacts a traditional diesel ferry would have.

Art Anderson Associates Designs Charter Fishing Vessel

Art Anderson Associates is designing a 36 ft. Stolkraft fishing boat for use in Cuttyhunk, Maine. The Stolkraft hull form has been used in a variety of high-speed ferries, water taxis and workboats around the world. The vessel will be powered by twin Cummins 370 hp marine diesel engines, with Kodiak waterjets providing a service speed of 35 knots.

Art Anderson Associates Awarded 5-year NOAA Contract

Engineering services firm Art Anderson Associates has been awarded a five-year blanket purchase agreement for naval architecture and engineering design services for oceanographic and fisheries research ships and small vessels operated by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Office of Marine Operations (OMAO) in the Atlantic, Pacific and Pacific Islands. This agreement will allow NOAA to contract with Art Anderson Associates for all phases of marine design and naval architecture, including specifications and drawings, analysis, feasibility studies, lifecycle management and operational engineering for NOAA vessels.

Art Anderson Associates Hires Six

Art Anderson Associates recently hired six new employees in order to keep pace with an increasing project workload. The new employees are Bill Higgins, Ed Cuaron, Greg Jennings, Todd Allen, Tinisha Rockiett, and Zach Wonderly. Bill Higgins is an Electrical Engineer with over forty years of industry experience. A former employee of Art Anderson Associates from 1980-1997, Higgins returns to the company in order to fill the need for a new professionally-licensed electrical engineer. He will be providing his expertise for both facilities and marine projects, including the firm’s ongoing work to provide engineering support for vessel and terminal security improvements for Washington State Ferries. Ed Cuaron joins the firm as a Technical Assistant to the company’s facilities division.

Migeotte Joins Art Anderson Associates

Art Anderson Associates announced the addition of naval architect Dr. Günther Migeotte to its marine division. Dr. Migeotte, a world leader in the design and testing of hydrofoil supported catamarans, joined the firm from the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa, where he was responsible for all commercial and research projects related to naval architecture carried out at the University including the design and model testing of the original “Hysucat” and the improved “Hysuwac” version of the high-speed, hydrofoil assisted catamaran. At the University, Dr. Migeotte was responsible for towing tank testing of high speed craft, CFD and theoretical calculations for resistance and powering of high speed craft…

Anderson to Present at Interferry Conference

Eric L. Anderson, CEO of Art Anderson Associates is the only member from the U.S. slated to present a paper at the International Marine Transit Association-Interferry Conference to be held from September 22 –25, 2003, in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Anderson, who will be one of 15 international presenters discussing innovations in ferry systems, has prepared a presentation titled “The challenges of redesigning the inter-modal ferry connection for comfort and security.” He will focus on the vessel-to-terminal connections and how to design for seamless connectivity with maximum through-put of passengers without diminishing safety and security.

Art Anderson Granted Stolkraft Contract

Art Anderson Associates has been awarded a contract to design all-aluminum 52 ft. (15.8 m) pilot boat for Delta Launch Services of Pilottown, La. Besides ferrying pilots to and from ships, the vessel will be U.S. Coast Guard certified as a passenger vessel under subchapter T. It will be powered by twin Detroit Diesel 8V2000 engines, rated at 645-hp each via propellers. The pilot vessel, which is the first of its kind in the U.S., is modeled after the high-tech Stolkraft patented hull form. Subsequent to spending nearly two years scrutinizing this hull form by the Associated Branch Pilots of Pilottown, Stolkraft's attributes were confirmed when they traveled to Australia for a test ride on a similar boat operated by the Fremantle Pilots.

Design Alaska, Art Anderson to Improve Energy Efficiency

Design Alaska, a Fairbanks-based architecture, engineering and surveying firm; and Art Anderson Associates, its naval architecture subconsultant, were recently awarded a contract for the Alaska Marine Highway System (AMHS) to investigate potential energy efficiency improvements. The contract, driven by new International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulations, requires development of Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plans (SEEMPs) for three AMHS vessels. The new IMO standards require vessels traveling internationally to obtain International Energy Efficiency Certificates (IEECs) demonstrating that vessel owners and operators have developed energy efficiency plans for their travel routes and vessel operating systems.

Gold Dredging Vessel Delivered

The 50-foot vessel, designed by Anderson Associates, & built by Pacifica has been delivered for gold dredging near Nome, Alaska. Anderson Associates, a Bremerton-based multidisciplinary engineering services firm, recently completed design of a new dredge vessel for Pacifica, a Seattle-based vehicle assembler. The vessel was designed specifically to meet the unique requirements of sub-surface dredging operations in the remote coastal waters of the Bering Sea, and is powered by twin 300HP Yamaha outboards.

Art Anderson Associates Hires Marine Engineer

BREMERTON, WA - Art Anderson Associates, a Bremerton-based multidisciplinary engineering services firm, has hired Sean McKee, PE, as a Senior Marine Electrical Engineer.  Mr. McKee will work in the firm’s Marine Division, and be responsible for leading and executing electrical engineering assignments for marine and vessel engineering projects.  He will also provide additional support to the firm’s Facilities Division to accommodate surges in electrical workload. Mr. McKee is a Washington-licensed Professional Engineer with a strong background in marine electrical systems.   

Art Anderson Awarded Port of Portland Contract

Art Anderson Associates, a Bremerton-based multidisciplinary engineering services firm, was recently awarded a contract for On-Call Naval Architect Design Services with the Navigation Division of the Port of Portland. The Navigation Division owns and operates a fleet of vessels and barges, including the Dredge Oregon, and has retained the firm to provide naval architecture and marine engineering services in support of fleet maintenance and operations. While the firm has maintained a presence in the Portland area for many years, providing facilities construction management services on behalf of the U.S. General Services Administration, it is only recently that it has focused on doing more naval architecture and marine work in the region.

Anderson Associates, facing an increasing workload and a growing need for additional technical depth in its engineering services hire two new team members: Stephen E. Gatz & Marc A. Derenburger. Stephen E. Gatz, PE is a naval architect working in the firm’s marine group, while Marc A. Derenburger has joined the facilities group as an entry-level mechanical engineer. Stephen Gatz brings a diverse background in naval architecture & marine engineering design, marine research and development, and marine operations.

M/V Tanner Christened in Texas

The United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Galveston District recently christened a unique 48-ft. vessel for use at its moorage facility. M/V Tanner - christened in honor of Sydney H. Tanner who retired from the Galveston District, USACE, after providing exceptional service to the district and the nation for more than 33 years - was christened recently in Texas by the Tanner family. The 48-ft. utilizes the uniquely innovative Stolkraft hull form, and will be put into service surveying the coastal waterways in the Galveston District. Art Anderson Associates assessed the match of the Stolkraft hull to the Gaveston District's specific requirements for a survey launch, and provided the plans and specifications for the Tanner's design.

Barczak Joins Alan C. McClure Associates

Naval architecture and engineering firm Alan C. McClure Associates (ACMA) announced today that Registered Professional Engineer Nicholas Barczak has joined the ACMA team as a naval architect. Nick received his Masters of Engineering in Naval Architecture and Small Craft Design in 2008 from the University of Southampton in the United Kingdom. He also attended Michigan Technological University where he studied Mechanical Engineering. Prior to joining ACMA, Nick worked as a Naval Architect with Art Anderson Associates and Elliott Bay Design Group.

New VP at BMT Designers & Planners

Ralph Duncan

BMT Designers & Planners (BMT), a subsidiary of BMT Group Ltd., an international design, engineering and risk management consultancy, appointed Ralph Duncan as Vice President of Business Development. A University of New Mexico, Naval Postgraduate School and Stanford University graduate, Ralph has over 30 years’ experience in the marine engineering sector. He has worked as an analyst and senior marine engineer, and has held a number of senior roles for Seattle-based naval architecture and marine engineering firm Art Anderson Associates, most recently as VP Marine Design and Research.

Radix Marine Signs Contract to Build Prototypes

Radix Marine, Inc., a marine vessel development company specializing in port and homeland security and defense initiatives, signed a contract to build two prototype manned vessels with a marine technology company, Advanced Marine Concepts, formed by Philip Whitener, a retired Boeing test engineer and Eric Anderson, CEO of Art Anderson Associates. The boats will be built in Radix Marine's new manufacturing facility, making them the first such orders to be produced by the facility. The prototype vessels are for a proprietary project being developed by Advanced Marine Concepts, and will use patented technology designed by the firm. Production on the vessels, codenamed "Dragonfly," will begin immediately.
