Wärtsilä, Carnival Ink Waste Treatment Systems Deal

Finnish marine equipment manufacturer Wärtsilä said it signed a framework agreement with Carnival Corporation covering the supply and installation of Wärtsilä’s waste water and dry waste treatment systems for up to 32 vessels across many of global cruise ship operator’s brands. Wärtsilä Bags New Orders for Aquarius UV BWMS

Finnish technology giant in the marine and energy markets Wärtsilä Oyj announced that it has recently been awarded a number of contracts to supply its Aquarius UV Ballast Water Management System (BWMS) to global shipping operators.According to the provider of smart technologies and complete lifecycle solutions, the systems will enable the vessels to be compliant with the Ballast Water Management Convention regulations that entered into force in September 2017 for all new build vessels.The contracts cover in total 13 systems, the orders for which were all booked in quarter four 2018, said a press release."The work is being carried out for ships being built at yards in China. The orders cover installations in a RoRo ferry, two RoPax, six tankers and four container vessels.

Siemens to Build Wärtsilä Marine Gear Boxes

Wärtsilä and Flender (Siemens AG, Mechanical Drives) have reached an agreement that will transfer the assembly and testing of Wärtsilä's marine gear box portfolio to the Siemens Mechanical Drives facilities in Voerde, Germany. In announcing the deal, Wärtsilä said the new arrangement takes advantage of synergies with processes developed at the Siemens plant to secure the quality and delivery punctuality of the gear boxes, thus providing greater customer value. High Speed Catamaran Powered by Wärtsilä Waterjets

Wärtsilä has been contracted to provide the waterjets for a new high speed ferry being built by the Incat Tasmania yard in Australia for Malta based Virtu Ferries. When delivered, this vessel will be the largest high speed catamaran operating in the Mediterranean Sea, and will have a service speed of up to 38 knots. The order with Wärtsilä was booked in March 2017. The scope of supply covers four Wärtsilä LJX1500SRI waterjets and a Lipstronic control system. The equipment is scheduled to be delivered to the yard in April 2018 and the ship is to be delivered to the owners at the end of 2018.

Wärtsilä Propellers to Drive Greek Tankers

TMS Tankers Ltd, one of the largest Greece based shipping fleet operators, has selected Wärtsilä fixed pitch propellers (FPPs) for its new vessels under construction in China. The order was placed with Wärtsilä's joint venture company in China, Wärtsilä CME Zhenjiang Propeller Co Ltd (WCME), in December 2015. Other leading Greek shipping companies have also recently opted for Wärtsilä FPPs. The contract covers the propellers for four Aframax tankers under construction at the Hantong Ship Heavy Industry yard. The Wärtsilä FPPs will be fitted with the company's EnergoProFin solution, a propeller cap with fins that rotates together with the propeller to produce fuel savings of up to 5 percent.

'Singing' Propellers Phenomenon Controlled

A joint research project carried out by Wärtsilä and City University London has succeeded in identifying the specific design parameters that create the risk of 'singing' propellers. Though rare, 'singing' is nevertheless an annoying problem that occurs as a strong tonal noise originating from the propeller, thus causing a negative effect to onboard comfort levels. The research programme reached its conclusions in December 2015. The problem has long been recognised in the marine industry. While the general perception has been that the frequency of the propeller blades' vibration mode coincides with the frequency of the hydrodynamic excitation forces at the trailing edge of the blades, the current research indicates that there is more complexity and sensitiveness to this hypothesis.

Wärtsilä Adds Thruster to Inland River Portfolio

Wärtsilä introduces the latest addition to its thruster product portfolio, the Wärtsilä WST-14 steerable thruster, which represents state-of-the-art azimuthing propeller technology. It is aimed primarily at inland waterway cargo vessel applications. The new thruster will provide increased reliability and efficiency, while also lowering costs. Among the many innovations incorporated into the WST-14 are its space-saving compact design, an integrated slipping clutch that provides a cost competitive solution for manoeuvring when combined with a fixed pitch (FP) propeller, and the ability to maintain and service the propeller shaft and steering seals without requiring a complete overhaul of the thruster. It has a straightforward, reliable design and is ice-class rated.

Wartsila Tunnel Thruster Gets LR Approval

Wartsila has successfully passed the final step of the Lloyd's Register (LRS) classification society's Type Approval process to obtain an LR Type Approval Certificate for the Wartsila WTT11 tunnel thruster. Having Type Approval means that the thruster will not have to undergo a design review for each individual vessel or hull number. It is anticipated that the approval certification will deliver significant cost savings, as well as considerable reductions in production time, thereby giving a shorter lead time for the customer. The approval also demonstrates that the WTT11 conforms to recognised industry quality standards, and that it is in full compliance with the LR Rules. The WTT11 belongs to the company's new generation portfolio of thruster solutions.

Wärtsilä's' Propulsion for Use with US Compliant ELA

Wärtsilä has developed propulsion systems that are capable of operating with Environmentally Acceptable Lubricants (EALs) and comply with the US Vessel General Permit 2013 (VGP-2013). Wärtsilä is among the first marine propulsion solutions suppliers to achieve this compliance for complete propulsion packages. For vessels operating in US waters, VGP-2013 mandates the use of EALs in all oil-to-sea interfaces unless technically unfeasible. VGP-2013 was issued by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and is applicable to all vessels sailing in US coastal waters. Wärtsilä began work on developing an effective solution in 2013, working together with numerous EAL suppliers.

Wärtsilä, VTT Contribute to Propulsion Research

A new technology research programme aimed at developing propulsion products specifically for operating in arctic conditions has been implemented with Wärtsilä and VTT, the Technical Research Centre of Finland, as the main contributors. The ArTEco (Arctic Thruster Ecosystem) project will altogether be supported by ten industrial and academic partners from Finland and other countries. ArTEco is a three year programme, commencing in 2015 and ending in 2017. Its primary aim is to foster new technology for propulsion solutions in an arctic operating environment. New Fixed Pitch Propeller Design from Wärtsilä

Wärtsilä introduced the FPP Opti Design, a new fixed pitch propeller (FPP) design concept. According to Wärtsilä, the new design offers fuel savings of up to 4 percent and highly reliable full scale performance predictions. The concept has been developed utilizing the latest computational fluid dynamics (CFD) technology. The Wärtsilä FPP Opti Design has been developed at the company’s Technology and Service Centre in the Netherlands, and is the result of highly experienced design engineers having access to the very latest and most sophisticated software and analysis tools. CFD calculations analyze not only the propeller performance but most importantly also, the interaction between the propeller and hull.

Wärtsilä Introduce New Steerable Thruster Series

The new Wärtsilä Steerable Thruster series (WST) is being introduced to replace the company's Modular Thruster and Compact Thruster series, while the new Wärtsilä Transverse Thruster series (WTT) is replacing the current range of transverse thrusters. The new products have been developed in response to changing market demands, requiring competitive thruster products which are more efficient and cover a wider power range. This major product development project was launched by Wärtsilä's Propulsion R&D already in 2011.
