Port of Long Beach Hosts Situational Awareness Exercise

Public, military and private sector leaders met to discuss how the Port of Long Beach (PoLB) model of a surface and subsurface situational awareness network can be a template for other ports to help increase America's resilience during the first 72 hours of a national or large-scale crisis, informs the ReadyCommunities Partnership (RCP). The RCP Military Base and Port Community Resiliency Initiative Hon. Chairman is Sen. Mary L. Landrieu (pictured) and the Initiative Hon. Co-Chairman is Hon. Asa Hutchinson.

Leaders from key sectors of the Greater New Orleans region will meet on Tuesday, December 3, 2013 to address gaps in national domestic response capability by including regional best practices as part of a template to be shared by America's strategic military base and port communities. Senators Urge Tracking of Containers from Points of Origin

Senators Susan Collins (R-ME) and Joseph Lieberman (D-CT) issued a Press Release urging the Department of Homeland Security to improve U.S. border protection by tracking containers being shipped to the United States from their points of origin. The senators also released a copy of the Letter they sent to Asa Hutchinson, Under Secretary for Border and Transportation Security, explaining their concerns in greater detail.

DHS Provide Ports with $179M in Grants

As part of the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) commitment to enhancing security at our nation's key ports and facilities, Secretary of Homeland Security Tom Ridge has announced $179,025,900 million dollars in Port Security Grants. The Port Security Grant Program provides resources for security planning and projects to improve dockside and perimeter security which is vital to securing our critical national seaports. These new awards will contribute to important security upgrades like new patrol boats in the harbor, surveillance equipment and the construction of new command and control facilities.
