New Orleans Port to Host Maritime Workforce Summit

Designed to expand awareness of the economic impact of commerce on the Lower Mississippi River and highlight career opportunities and pathways, the Summit will feature an array of speakers from industry and academia, along with a panel discussion on how industry can collaborate with educators to fulfill current and future workforce opportunities. “This Summit is designed to educate community stakeholders of the economic impact of trade, transportation and logistics throughout the region and build a coalition of advocates to help leverage resources to develop a highly-skilled local workforce for the future,” said Gary LaGrange, Port President and CEO. The summit begins at 8:30 a.m. in the Great Hall of the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center.

Haven Marine Bags Back To Back Dockings

Despite a slow start to the year, Haven Marine Services reports it is now seeing a change in fortunes with two dockings for Svitzer in quick succession, with one vessel sailing after a refit and another in on the same tide. This comes after a prolonged period of inactivity at the yard during the last three months due to lack of orders and extremes of weather which resulted in several vessels having to be diverted to other repair facilities due to the fact that they were unable to enter Milford Docks.

Harvey Gulf Announces Delivery of its Flagship Vessel

Harvey Gulf International Marine, LLC accepted the M/V Harvey Deep-Sea from Eastern Shipbuilding Group, Inc. on July 22, 2013. Following delivery of the vessel from Eastern’s Nelson Yard in Panama City, Fla., the Harvey Deep-Sea took its first journey to Associated Terminals in Port of St. Bernard, La., and with the assistance of Bisso Marine, installed the NOV 165mT heave compensated knuckle boom crane with capacity to lower 100mT to 3,000m/10,000ft. Harvey Gulf notes that the Harvey Deep-Sea represents a first of its kind for the Gulf of Mexico.

Mississippi Floating Crane Fleet Expanded

Associated Terminals LLC in Louisiana/USA is expanding its fleet of machines with its seventh Gottwald Floating Crane. A Generation 5 Model 8 crane variant will be starting commercial operation this month and will be one of the highest performance Floating Cranes handling bulk materials on the Mississippi. Currently, six Gottwald Floating Cranes supplied by Demag Cranes are in operation with Associated Terminals LLC ensuring smooth, efficient cargo handling. “On the Mississippi, in particular, where quay facilities are few and far between, we intend to use the new Gottwald Floating Crane to improve our versatility in terms of midstream cargo handling”, explained Gary Poirrier, Director of Associated Terminals LLC.

Gulf Coast Dockside Operations and Assets acquired by Associated Terminals

Associated Terminals recently expanded its stevedoring and material handling operations on the lower Mississippi River with its acquisition of substantially all of the assets of Gulf Coast Dockside, Inc., along with a substantial interest in Bulk Material Transfer, Inc. Gulf Coast Dockside is a stevedoring company whose primary operations are located in Chalmette, LA, near milepost 90.5 of the lower Mississippi River. The company’s assets include three high capacity floating cranes and all of the attachments and equipment related to the stevedoring operation. Associated also assumes all of the existing contractual stevedoring obligations. Bulk Material Transfer operates a bulk material handling facility at the Chalmette slip within the St. Bernard Port, Harbor and Terminal District.
