ClassNK Chairman and President Noboru Ueda successfully fulfilled his term as Chairman of the Association of Asian Classification Societies (ACS) at the end of 2014, a position which he held from 1 January 2014. During his one-year tenure, Mr. Ueda was engaged in the following activities with a view to enhancing ACS’ operations and contributing to the Asian maritime industry. Mr. Ueda established a policy to reinforce the approach to discussions at the International Maritime Organization (IMO), so that more and more balanced international regulations would be developed with the voices of Asian maritime industry professionals reflected.

Indian Register of Shipping (IRClass) has announced three new senior appointments aimed at boosting its presence in key international maritime centers. The new appointments in Singapore and London are part of IRClass’ strategic plan to expand its capabilities and geographical reach to meet growing demand in these vital markets. Mr. Narayanan Shankar joins as Senior Vice President of Business Development in Singapore. He will co-direct business development and strategy with Mr Anil Devli, Chief Operating Officer (Commercial) of IRClass.

ClassNK Chairman and President Noboru Ueda was honored with the Global Lifetime Achievement Award at the Shipping Marine and Ports 2014 Leadership & Excellence Awards on February 10, 2014 in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the development of the maritime industry. The awards ceremony is held every two years by Jasubhai Media in conjunction with the SMP World Expo to recognize excellence in such fields as innovation, safety, and education within the maritime industry. The awards ceremony was held at the Lalit Hotel in Mumbai, and was attended by 160 representatives from throughout the Indian and global maritime industry.

The first meeting of the ClassNK Technical Committee was held at the Industry Club of Japan in Tokyo Feb. 8. The Technical Committee, which includes top technical experts from throughout the maritime industry as well as leading maritime universities, is charged with reviewing and approving all amendments to the ClassNK Rules. During today’s meeting the Committee approved a total of 39 amendments and revisions to the leading class society’s rules, including changes reflecting new research, amendments to international regulations, and the changing needs of the maritime industry. “This has been a busy year for ClassNK,” remarked Mr. Ueda…
