FEPORT, ETA, EMPA and ECASBA Raise Cargo Diversion Concerns

As risks of cargo diversion to the detriment of EU ports are becoming more and more real with the upcoming entry into force at the beginning of 2024 of EU ETS for shipping, local organizations are voicing their concerns.The Federation of European Port Companies and Private Terminals (FEPORT), European Tugowners’ Association (ETA), European Maritime Pilots’ Association (EMPA) and European Community Association of Ship Brokers and Agents (ECASBA) members are expressing major concerns regarding the lack of real assessment of the EU ETS for shipping related effects on EU ports.

European Shipping Week Speaker Announced

Anthony Luzzatto Gardner, former US Ambassador to the European Union and Visiting Fellow at the College of Europe, will be the guest speaker at the European Shipping Week Gala Dinner, to be held on Wednesday 1st March 2017 at the Steigenberger Wiltcher Hotel in Brussels. Ambassador Gardner, who has dedicated more than 20 years of his career to US-European affairs, will speak on the important subject of ‘US-EU Relations: Looking Back, Looking Forward’. Welcoming the news, Patrick Verhoeven, Secretary General of the European Community Shipowners’ Associations (ECSA) and Chairman of the European Shipping Week Steering Group, said his speech would be very insightful considering the political developments which have taken place in Europe and the US over recent months.

Growth Potential of European Short Sea Shipping Untapped

A coalition of European shipping sector organisations, led by the European Community Association of Ship Brokers and Agents (ECASBA), has called on the European Parliament, Commission and Member States to honour the commitments to support short sea shipping that were made in May last year in the Athens Declaration. ECASBA General Manager Jonathan C. Williams FICS, who coordinated the joint letter, said that the Declaration included a clear and unequivocal call by Transport Ministers for concerted action by Europe to allow short sea shipping to exploit its full potential as the most efficient and environmentally friendly mode of transport. One year on however, the actions that require to be taken to allow the Declaration aims to be achieved, have still not been progressed, he added.

European Parliament Backs European Shipping Week

European Shipping Week has been granted the European Parliament’s official patronage by its President, Martin Schulz. Both the European Commission and the European Parliament have now actively expressed their support for the week-long event which will be held in Brussels during March 2-6, 2015. Commenting on European Shipping Week, Schulz said, “The aim of the initiative, namely to bring together the leading members of the shipping industry of the EU and give them an opportunity to meet, debate and share experiences is welcomed by the European Parliament.

European Commission VP Welcomes European Shipping Week

In a letter to Patrick Verhoeven, Secretary General of the European Community Shipowners’ Associations (ECSA), Commissioner Kallas said there was no doubt that Europe needs a high quality shipping sector "that can compete around the world." Heidmar CEO Marc La Monte Passes Away

Heidmar reported the unexpected passing of Marc La Monte of Wilton, Connecticut. Mr. La Monte passed away while on a business flight in Europe on the morning of October 14th. La Monte was a widely respected member of the international shipping industry for 27 years. He served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Heidmar Inc. from April 2012. Prior to becoming CEO, La Montehad been the Managing Director of Heidmar’s VLCC tanker pool, Seawolf Tankers. La Monte spent 16 years at Overseas Shipping Group in various positions, including vice president of OSG’s LNG tanker business.

Ziobro Appointed VP at U.S. Shipping Partners

U.S. Shipping Partners L.P. announced the appointment of Jan T. Ziobro, a 28-year veteran of the shipping industry, as Vice President, New Construction. In this role, Mr. Ziobro will have oversight of the Partnership's new construction program, which presently stands at nine 49,000 dwt product tankers and four 19,999 dwt articulated tug barge (ATB) units. Mr. Ziobro will report to Joseph P. Gehegan, President and COO. Ziobro holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering from the University of Michigan. He is a member of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers and an associate member of the Association of Ship Brokers and Agents.

FONASBA calls for clarity

The Federation of National Associations of Ship Brokers and Agents (FONASBA) has called for more clarity in ship agents' rate structures. Speaking at the federation's recent annual meeting in Portugal, FONASBA president Edouard de Clebsattel said, "The relationship between the principal and the ship agent is one built on trust. It is important for that trust that principals understand clearly how they are being charged and what the fees cover. FONASBA member associations have agreed to produce overviews of cost structures in their respective countries to kick-start this initiative. De Clebsattel also emphasized the need for increased education and training if members are to meet principals' future requirements.
