VSAT Connectivity for Briese Schiffahrts Fleet Expansion

Globecomm has supplied its global Ku-band VSAT service to specialist shipowner and manager Briese Schiffahrts in support of its fleet growth plans.Long-time Globecomm customer Briese is undertaking a program of fleet renewal, constructing a series of eight ‘Open Top Eco 5000’ multi-purpose vessels, designed to consume 30 percent less fuel but with increased crane and cargo capacity.The first of four ships was christened in mid-April 2018 at Zhejiang Zengzhou Shipbuilding Co with three more of the 90-meter long…

Scott Bergeron appointed CEO of LISCR

Scott Bergeron has been appointed Chief Executive Officer of the Liberian International Ship & Corporate Registry (LISCR), the US-based manager of the Liberian Registry. Bergeron joined LISCR in 2000 as Chief Operating Officer. Prior to that, he developed a wide range of experience in the shipping industry, working for shipowner/manager Laurin Maritime, for Det Norske Veritas and for the US Coast Guard, as well as gaining practical seagoing experience on a variety of different types of ship. Yoram Cohen and Adam Cohen will remain as Chairman and Executive Vice-Chairman, respectively, of LISCR.

SCI Goes West

As of July 1, the Seamen’s Church Institute (SCI) has assumed management of the International Maritime Center in the San Francisco Bay Area of California. Last year, the Bay Area Seafarers’ Services (BASS) approached SCI about adding a West Coast resource to the services SCI provides to the world’s mariners. The Executive Committee of SCI’s Board of Trustees will manage the International Maritime Center as it is integrated into the framework of the Institute during this transitional year. Two new SCI employees will operate from the Center, serving all of the commercial ports in the Bay Area—a Senior Chaplain and a Community Relations Coordinator. Each brings knowledge and experience of the Port and the International Maritime Center.

Chouest Purchases Tampa Shipyard

On November 18, 2008, Edison Chouest Offshore officials appeared before the Tampa Port Authority in an effort to secure the assignment of Tampa Bay Shipbuilding and Repair’s long-term lease agreement with the port. The authority had no objection to the transfer and, on that date, Tampa Ship, LLC was born. Chouest assumed management and operation of the yard in early December. The Tampa shipyard is a full service conversion, overhaul and repair facility that was previously owned by a group associated with Mobile, AL-based Bender Shipbuilding and Repair.

Cosco Busan Management Company Charged

A federal grand jury in returned a second superseding indictment charging Fleet Management Limited, a ship management company, with negligently causing the discharge of 50,000 gallons of oil from the Cosco Busan and falsifying documents after the crash to cover-up the company’s negligence, the Justice Department announced today. Fleet Management, the company responsible for operating the Cosco Busan, was charged with six felony counts for making false statements and obstruction justice. According to the indictment, Fleet Management, acting through senior ship officers and shore-based supervisory officials, concealed and covered-up documents with an intent to impede, obstruct and influence the investigation of the spill. The falsified documents include a fictitious passage plan for Nov.

Liberian Registry Gets USCG Recognition

The Liberian Registry has been admitted to the United States Coast Guard’s Qualship 21 quality incentive program– a distinction enjoyed by only ten percent of foreign-flagged ships calling at U.S. ports - as a result of its excellent port state control record. This recognition of Liberia’s commitment to quality shipping comes at a time of growth and expansion for the registry, which has grown by more than 500 vessels under the management of the U.S.-based Liberian International Ship & Corporate Registry (LISCR).Reductions in port state control examinations and streamlined inspection procedures are among the benefits available under the Qualship 21(Quality Shipping for the 21st Century) program to owners of non-U.S.-registered ships calling at U.S.

Carnival Cruise Lines Founder Dies

Ted Arison, founder of Carnival Cruise Lines, reportedly died of a heart attack on Oct. 1 in Tel Aviv at the age of 75. Arison, listed in Forbes magazine as one of the world's richest men, made most of his fortune in the United States and had vast business interests in Israel. He assumed management of a passenger shipping company in Miami, Florida, soon after retiring there in 1966, and started Carnival Cruise Lines in 1972 after buying his first liner, Mardi Gras. Miami-based Carnival Corp. is now the world's biggest cruise operator with 45 ships and lines including Cunard and Holland America. Arison's son, Micky, is chief executive of Carnival.
