The U.S. Coast Guard coordinated the tow of a disabled 611-foot freighter into the port of New York and New Jersey after it lost propulsion over 100 miles offshore in the Atlantic Ocean on Tuesday, August 21.At around 9 p.m. on Tuesday, watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector New York received a report that the Panama-flagged bulk carrier GDF Suez North Sea with 21 crew aboard, was disabled. The spire that will crown the jewel of the Manhattan skyline is making its way over the holiday weekend towards One World Trade Center. A barge carrying eight of the 18 sections of spire for One WTC is en route to New York City on a 1,500 nautical-mile journey south from Canada down the Atlantic seaboard on the Atlantic Salvor barge. The vessel left Valleyfield, Quebec, on November 16 and is expected to arrive early next week at Port Newark. The sections of the spire, ranging in weight from approximately five tons to more than 67 tons, will then be readied for transfer to Lower Manhattan. The remaining smaller pieces, which will travel from Canada via truck, are expected to arrive in mid-December.

On Monday, January 18, 2010, Donjon-SMIT, LLC, an OPA-90 Alliance, was notified by QI Gallagher Marine Services that a vessel required emergency towing assistance. The Tavricheski Bridge, managed by UNICOM Ship Management, had broken a main engine camshaft and lost main propulsion 160 miles Southeast of Nantucket in the North Atlantic. The Tavricheski Bridge, a 50,300 GT tanker, was carrying 32,500 MTs of Naptha. The weather was calm with no significant storms in the area expected within 48 to 72 hours. Donjon Marine continues work on a contract awarded on March 24, 2009 for the wreck removal and disposal of the remnants of the M/V Fedra, which grounded and partially sank during a storm in October. On May 25, 2009, Donjon commenced site operations and with support from local subcontractors, performed vessel remediation as well as pre-cutting portions of the remaining deck house, stack and decking in preparation of the arrival of Donjon’s main wreck removal flotilla and salvage crew.

Donjon Marine, Co., Inc., a provider of multi-faceted marine services including marine salvage, heavy lift, dredging and related emergency response services, was awarded a contract on March 24, 2009 for the wreck removal and disposal of the remnants of the M/V Fedra. On October 10, 2008, during a significant storm, the M/V Fedra grounded and subsequently sank off the eastern side of Europa Point in Gibraltar in approximately 20 feet of water. As a result of the grounding and pounding of the vessel due to sea conditions, the vessel separated in two pieces at the forward end of No. 6 Cargo Hold.

The single skin, ocean tank barge, B. No. 105, was sold to West African buyers after sellers took delivery of their newbuilding double-hull replacement. The barge, re-named Heyden-Lamissa, was built by Gretna Machine & Iron Works, Gretna, LA in 1971. Principal dimensions are 340 ft by 70 ft by 27.5 ft hull depth. Cargo capacity is 12,889 tons or abt. 102,000 bbls in 10 coiled cargo tanks. Special features include a 12 million BTU self-heating system and crew accommodations for four persons.

The Unified Command at Coast Guard Sector Boston is continuing to monitor and assist the Liquefied Natural Gas tanker Catalunya Spirit, which lost propulsion and became disabled and adrift east of Cape Cod Monday morning. Teekay Corporation, which operates the Catalunya Spirit, contracted four tugboats and three technical representatives to assist the tanker. Donjon Marine Co., Inc., a provider if multi-faceted marine services including marine salvage, ocean and inland towing, emergency response, and dredging, provided towing and logistical support thru its U.S. Navy Salvage and Related services contract, in the towing out to sea of the Navy’s USS America, the third Kitty Hawk-class attack aircraft carrier on April 19. The Navy will conduct tests on the carrier, commissioned in 1965, for a number of weeks and then the ship will be sunk. Donjon coordinated the movement of the USS America from its lay berth located in the Philadelphia Naval Yard, thru the Delaware River to the open ocean where the vessel was towed by Donjon’s 7000-Horse Power Atlantic Salvor and 8000-Horse Power Powhatan to the Project site.

Donjon Marine Co., Inc. was invited by the State Fire Marshall and the Director of the New Jersey Division of Fire Safety to participate in an exercise conducted by members of the Union and Morris County Fire Services to test and showcase the capabilities of a portable marine firefighting system known as Neptune/Iron Man. On May 26, at Donjon’s Berth 22 Port Newark Facility, Donjon loaded the Neptune/Iron Man firefighting system onto Donjon’s newly built 225 x 54 x 14-ft. deck barge, the Witte 254, along with necessary support equipment including a forklift, rigging, and matting to move the gear during the exercise. On May 27, Donjon’s tug Atlantic Salvor took the Witte 254 and associated gear into Newark Bay where the fire-fighting system was tested successfully.

Donjon Marine is serving as the lead salvage contractor for the Katrina/Rita Response as a result of its competitively bid U.S. Navy Salvage and Related Services Contract with the U.S. Navy, Supervisor of Salvage and Diving . Donjon has held this contract, uninterrupted, since 1979, after a competitive bidding process approximately every five years. As such, Donjon supplies equipment and personnel in support of the needs of the Federal Response Team (FEMA, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and U.S. Coast Guard who task and direct SUPSALV), and also has a 10-person management team in place in Alexandria, LA, to manage the salvage response effort.

Donjon Marine's 7,200 hp salvage tug Powhatan deliverd the fourth and final ex-U.S. Navy frigate to the Turkish Governement. Donjon Marine had been contracted last year to tow the frigates ? three in Philadelphia and one in Charleston, S.C. - and deliver them to the Turks in the Sea of Marmara. Each frigate (414 x 44 x 24 ft.) was towed by the company's 225 ft. U.S. flag salvage tug, the largest such salvage tug operating under the U.S. flag. The third frigate was towed across the Atlantic Ocean by Donjon's tug Atlantic Salvor, a 6,480 hp ocean tug.
