Tug and Barge Transporting Munitions Run Aground on Florida Beach

A tug and barge ran aground Thursday night near Deerfield Beach, Fla., while transporting munitions from Port Canaveral to a U.S. Naval facility in the Bahamas.The U.S.-flagged tug Sea Eagle had four people on board when it began taking on water and went aground at 8:45 p.m. on Thursday, the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) said. No injuries or pollution have been reported, and both the tug and barge are said to be in stable condition.Three of the crew members were rescued from the attached barge by Customs and Border Protection Air and Marine Operations (CBP AMO) rescue crews.

Florida Navy Bases Prepare for Irma

Navy installations throughout Florida are preparing for heavy weather as Hurricane Irma approaches South Florida. Commander, Navy Region Southeast, Rear Adm. Bette Bolivar, directed the evacuation of non-essential personnel and family members from Naval Air Station Key West, Florida, Sept. 5. "Their safety and security is a top priority," Bolivar said. Approximately 50-60 mission essential personnel are remaining behind to maintain essential functions on the installation. Naval Air Station Key West personnel have a designated safe haven area of within 300 miles of Atlanta. Personnel and family members need to muster with the installation, their command or through the Navy Family Accountability and Assistance System (NFAAS) website upon arrival to the safe haven area.

USCG Suspends Search for Downed Aircraft near Jamaica

The Coast Guard suspended their search Sunday at approximately 11 a.m. for two possible survivors of a plane in the water 14 miles north of Port Antonio, Jamaica, Friday. Watchstanders at Coast Guard 7th District command center in Miami received a call from U.S. Northern Command at 11 a.m. reporting that a Socata TBM 700 light business and utility single engine turboprop aircraft departed Rochester, New York at 8:26 a.m. with two people aboard who were reportedly unresponsive to radio calls. The plane was scheduled to arrive in Naples, Florida at noon, Friday. A Coast Guard C-130 aircrew was launched from Clearwater, Florida to help monitor the unresponsive aircraft. Two F-15 fighter jets under the direction of North American Aerospace Defense Command were launched to investigate.

An all-electric, fuel cell-powered, unmanned aerial system (UAS) aircraft has been successfully launched from the submerged 'USS Providence' (SSN 719) & flew a several hour mission demonstrating live video capabilities streamed back to the submarine, surface support vessels and Norfolk base before landing at the Naval Sea Systems Command Atlantic Undersea Test and Evaluation Center (AUTEC), Andros, Bahamas. From concept to fleet demonstration, the Navy says this idea took less than six years to produce in a collaboration between the U.S.

NAVSEA Warfare Center Personnel Recognized

Four Naval Sea System Command (NAVSEA) warfare center scientists and engineers were among those recognized, July 23, at the annual Top Navy Scientists and Engineers of the Year award ceremony at the Pentagon. As NAVSEA field activities, Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) and Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) are the Navy's principal research, development, test and evaluation (RDT&E), analysis and assessment activities for ship and submarine platform, including machinery technology for surface combat systems, ordnance, mines, and strategic systems products and support. Northrop Grumman Installs Simulator System

Electronic Support Measures (ESM) Target Generator System (TGS) at the U.S. Navy's Atlantic Undersea Test and Evaluation Center (AUTEC) on Andros Island in the Bahamas. The system generates simulated radar threat emissions and can emulate any known friendly or enemy radar system. Developed as part of AUTEC's Improvement and Modernization Program, the ESM TGS can emulate up to 64 threat radar modes dynamically. The system is also completely reprogrammable, a key distinguishing feature. "The ESM TGS system represents a major enhancement to the Navy range's ESM test and evaluation capability, particularly for advanced receivers located on ships, helicopters, aircraft and submarines," said Dr. Edward Eberl, president of Amherst Systems.

NOAA Research Vessel Exceeds Standards as Quiet Vessel

The newly constructed National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration fishery survey vessel Henry B. Bigelow has exceeded international standards as an acoustically quiet vessel, according to a report released by the U.S. Navy. NOAA received the results from a battery of underwater acoustic tests done by the Navy on the ship at the Atlantic Undersea Test and Evaluation Center on Andros Island in the Bahamas. “Henry B. Bigelow is one of only a handful of research ships in the world that have met this high standard as a quiet research vessel,” said retired Navy Vice Adm. Conrad C. DynCorp Wins $35M For USNS Subcontract

DynCorp has received a five-year, $35 million subcontract to provide operational support to the United States Naval Ship (USNS) Hayes and USNS Waters, Naval Special Mission ships that support test and range operations in Florida. The USNS Hayes, one of the acoustically quietest surface ships in the world, operates from Port Canaveral, Fla., and supports the U.S. Navy's underwater sound range at the Atlantic Undersea Test and Evaluation Center (AUTEC). Because of its special design, the Hayes is the only ship in the U.S. Navy capable of performing the full-spectrum of active and passive ship acoustic signature measurements required for new and recently overhauled Naval surface ships and submarines.
