BMT Supports Commissioning of the Royal Navy’s HMS Magpie

BMT has supported the Atlas Elektronik UK (AEUK) team in the delivery and subsequent commissioning of the Royal Navy’s (RN) HMS Magpie which will join the RN’s hydrographic squadron, replacing the veteran Inshore Survey Vessel HMS Gleaner. The commissioning of HMS Magpie took place on 28th June 2018, and BMT was proud to attend the ceremony along with members of AEUK, the Royal Navy, DE&S and other VIPs. HMS Magpie is the first and largest vessel to be delivered by AEUK as part of its contract for the supply and support of Common Workboats for the UK MOD. Ranging in size from 11 to 18 metres, the multi-role ‘SEA Class’ vessels share common components and will be modular in design.

Norco to Build Composite Workboats for UK Navy

Norco Holdings, the Poole-based manufacturer of lightweight composite structures and GRP moldings, has been selected by Atlas Elektronik UK (AEUK) to build the fleet of replacement workboats ordered recently by the UK MoD and due to be delivered over the next six years. The contract is for 30+ boats in total, ranging in size from 11 to 15 meters. As the primary composites supplier for the project, Norco will be producing the major components for the new vessels including hull, deck, superstructure and associated multipurpose modules.

BMT to Support for UK MOD’s Common Workboats

BMT Group subsidiaries BMT Asset Performance Ltd and BMT Defense Services Ltd will work with Atlas Elektronik UK (AEUK) and its team of suppliers, who announced that it has been awarded a contract valued at £48 million for the supply and support of Common Workboats for the U.K.’s Ministry of Defense (MoD) over a six-year period. LR Joins Collision Avoidance Research for Autonomous Ships

LR is participating in the MAXCMAS project, a £1.27million collaborative research project that aims to investigate, develop and implement real-time collision avoidance algorithms for autonomous maritime vessels. The MAXCMAS project aims to develop COLREGs (International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea 1972) compliant collision avoidance navigation for autonomous ships and other Unmanned Surface Vessels (USVs). Compliance with current and future regulations is instrumental to the wide-scale use of USVs at sea. Being able to demonstrate satisfactory autonomous operation that meets the COLREGs is also pivotal to maritime safety. The project also hopes to carry out comprehensive machine execution of the COLREGs and demonstrate these in part in real-world representative sea trials.

Unmanned Surface Vessels: From Concept to Service

Over the next decade the maritime sector is likely to see one of the largest changes since sail gave way to steam. Unmanned Surface Vehicles (USV) are now being considered for various marine roles and the drivers for rapid development are significant. Unmanned or autonomous vessels have passed through the trial and evaluation stage and are now being adopted for civilian and military applications. The maritime sector now has the opportunity to shape technology developments from legislative and end-user standpoints.

AEUK Sponsors Submarine Race Team

Atlas Elektronik UK (AEUK) announced that it has been welcomed on board as one of the sponsors of the Bath University Team (BURST) for this year’s European International Submarine Race (eISR) to be held July 7-11, 2014 in Gosport. AEUK said it decided to sponsor the team due to the technical expertise and promise that they have shown, and the sponsorship has enabled the team to purchase valuable tools and materials required in the run up to the races themselves. Graduates and Senior Management from AEUK have already made visits to the University to meet the team and learn a little more about the project and what they are working on. A company spokesman for AEUK said, "AEUK chose to sponsor the BURST team due to their passion and enthusiasm when we visited them at the University.

AEUK Completes Sonar FAT for German Navy

Atlas Elektronik U.K. Ltd. (AEUK) confirmed that that their Cerberus Mod2 Diver Detection Sonar has now successfully completed its Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) at their premises in the U.K. against a particularly comprehensive and demanding set of requirements set by the German Government. Of particular significance was the accreditation of a completely new design and build of a bespoke Power Supply and Processing Unit (PSPU) to the Mil-Std EMC and Environmental qualification standards set by the customer as well as the stringent German Information Security (BSI) testing which further complements the integrity of the AEUK design.

Thales Awarded Royal Navy Services Contract

Thales U.K. signed a 10-year contract with the Ministry of Defense (MOD), worth up to £600 million, for the in-service support of the Royal Navy’s major sensor systems. The new Sensors Support Optimization Project (SSOP) builds on the Thales’s Contractor Logistics Support contract, originally signed in 2003, which has provided support to the Royal Navy’s sonar and electronic warfare systems for the past 10 years. FAST Program Achieves Successful Critical Design Review

Atlas Elektronik UK, with its Atlas-QED consortium partners ITT Corporation (formerly EDO Corporation) and QinetiQ, has achieved a successful Critical Design Review of a mine counter measures (MCM) flexible agile sweeping technology (FAST) technology readiness demonstrator (TRD), in line with the main program schedule. The demonstrator, which is being supplied under contract, will ultimately enable the MoD to put a combined influence sweep (CIS) replacement into service using FAST Technology. This latest milestone follows an Interim Design Review in September 2007. With the build phase well underway, the program remains on track to achieve the target of readiness for formal trials later this year.
