The Australian Department of Defense has handed over a newly built patrol boat to the Republic of Vanuatu. Shell Australia and Challenger Institute of Technology, in Western Australia, have committed to a multi-year partnership to develop training programs for the technicians who will operate and maintain the energy giant’s revolutionary Prelude Floating LNG facility. Shell and Challenger will jointly develop the training programs, which will be rolled out from 2014 as Shell completes the construction and commissioning of the Prelude FLNG facility, to be stationed in the East Browse Basin off WA’s Kimberley coast.

Western Australian shipbuilder Strategic Marine officially opened its $16.3m (USD) shipyard in Vietnam on February 24, demonstrating that the company is confident it can ride out the current global economic turmoil. Strategic Marine Chairman Mark Newbold told several hundred dignitaries and guests attending the grand opening that the Vietnamese yard had already won more than $61.8m in orders. Strategic Marine chairman and founder Mark Newbold has won an Ernst & Young Australian Entrepreneur of the Year Award. Strategic Marine has successfully launched the base of the floating dry dock it has on order from the Australian Marine Complex (AMC) on schedule from its Vietnamese shipyard. The dock’s 4,400 tonne base was launched flawlessly from the company’s facility at Dong Xuyen Industrial Zone at Ba-Riang Vung Tau at 4pm on Tuesday, November 18. The 99m long and 53m wide base was then lifted aboard a Dockside submersible vessel “The Teal” for its eight-day journey to the AMC at Henderson in Western Australia.

The expansion of Western Australia’s shipbuilding capabilities is set to continue with the construction of two crucial common-use facilities at the Australian Marine Complex (AMC) at Henderson. The State Government has today called for expressions of interest to build a service and repair facility for the local super-yacht industry and a blast and paint facility at the AMC. Industry and Enterprise Minister Francis Logan said the State Government was committed to ensuring the long-term future of the WA shipbuilding industry by planning for these new facilities. Logan said the super-yacht industry had the potential to bring millions of dollars to Western Australia.

The State Government has called for tenders for the construction of a floating dock at the Australian Marine Complex ( AMC ) in Henderson. Industry and Enterprise Minister Francis Logan said the floating dock was part of the $174m AMC expansion announced by Premier Alan Carpenter last year. The Minister said Australian-based companies were increasingly becoming recognised for their capacity to deliver complex contracts, especially in the shipbuilding and oil and gas industries. The floating dock was crucial to securing long-term maintenance work on the Royal Australian Navy ( RAN ) Collins Class submarine fleet, as well as enhancing WA’s bid for ongoing defence contracts.
