Ocean Signal has rolled out its new ATA100 Class A and ATB1 Class B AIS transponders as fully compliant solutions to increase visibility, aid collision-avoidance and enhance navigational safety for a range of commercial workboats, support vessels and fishing boats. The AIS transponders were unveiled for the first time at Asia Pacific Maritime. The ATA100 is a combined SOLAS and Inland approved single-unit device capable of exchanging dynamic and static ship data with other AIS systems and developed to meet the latest IMO carriage requirements and IEC standards.

Danelec Marine on Bridging Ship Telematics Data Gap

Danelec Marine has published a White Paper that makes the case for using Voyage Data Recorder (VDR) technology to provide real-time access to data from shipboard systems and sensors. The White Paper, entitled “VDRConnect Bridges the Data Gap,” is available for free download at www.danelec-marine.com/news/white-paper-on-vdrconnect-remote-access-solution.aspx. “The shipping industry has been slow to embrace the telematics revolution that is transforming other transportation sectors, primarily because of the expense and difficulty in extracting data from shipboard equipment and transmitting it via satellite to ship managers ashore,” said Hans Ottosen, CEO of Danelec Marine.

Beyond the Black Box

Using the VDR as the Ship’s Data Clearing House provides budget-minded operators with the means, the bandwidth and the economy to monitor critical systems. Go on: dip your toes in the big data water. Big Data. It’s all the rage across the full spectrum of the maritime world. Thousands of data points on 70,000 vessels literally scream out to be harvested and sent back to the home office, all with the intent of making your vessel more efficient, your operation more profitable, the environment cleaner and perhaps, your bunker and maintenance bills lower. The only left to ask is: what’s it going to cost me? Actually, not as much as you might think.

ZF Geared up for a Commerical Maritime Push

“We know how to build gears, and these (Tough Gears) are really on the highest standard in terms of material, production processes and design. Today we have a wide, modern portfolio in this (workboat) area. This should be a signal into the market: We are here; we have this portfolio, and it’s a good product. In fact it is a really good product.” Andre Körner, Head of Production Commericial & Fast Craft, ZF Friedrichshafen AG

A walk through the ZF Friedrichshafen AG marine propulsion system manufacturing plant in southern Germany does nothing but confirm the commonly held perceptions of German engineering prowess: the facility is clean to a fault; the equipment is modern and well-maintained; the employees are orderly and efficient. While the ZF marine propulsion systems business – which generated a turnover of $336 million in 2013 – is but a sliver of the company’s overall 2013 sales of $22.4 billion…

Danelec Introduces VDRConnect at SMM14

Danelec Marine's DM100 VDR (Credit Danelec)

At SMM 2014, Danelec Marine is unveiling VDRConnect, a Web-based remote access service available with the Danelec DM100 Voyage Data Recorder (VDR). VDRConnect is a module that provides selective transmission of data from the Danelec DM100 via satellite to the home office. The module directly connects to the ship’s IT and satellite communication systems with no need for a separate PC. With VDRConnect, the onshore ship manager can log into an IP-based Web portal using a convenient…

MagnaShear Brakes to be Featured at WorkBoat

The MagnaShear marine duty motor brake from Force Control Industries will be featured in booth #1862 at the International WorkBoat Show, from December 3-5 in New Orleans, La. These proven brakes employs oil shear technology, providing longer service life even in demanding applications like the frequent start/stop cycles seen on cranes, hoists, winches and other marine material handling equipment. High grade castings, marine duty coatings, stainless steel fasteners and accessories make these brakes an ideal solution for onshore and offshore crane applications.

Oils and Oil Analysis: What You Need to Know

In any given lubricant (such as engine oil, transmission fluid or gear oil), there are three main factors that influence the “useful life” of the lubricant:  Viscosity Stability, Oxidation, and Contamination. While it is important to understand how these factors affect oil life, it is equally important to realize that none of these factors can be measured or monitored except through a thorough and ongoing oil analysis program. Viscosity - First, let’s examine the oil property known as “Viscosity.”  Viscosity is defined as resistance of an oil to flow at a given temperature.

Tracerline® Dye-Lite® All-In-One™ full-spectrum fluorescent dye easily pinpoints leaks in all oil and oil-based fluid systems, including engine oil (includes synthetics), fuel, automatic transmission fluid, power steering and hydraulic fluid (petroleum-based). All-In-One dye ensures optimum leak detection in marine vessels systems because it actually contains two distinct fluorescent dyes. One dye fluoresces best under ultraviolet light, and the other under blue light. So whatever type of inspection lamp is used, All-In-One dye is sure to produce a brilliant glow.
