WWII Museum’s PT Boat Readies for Passengers
A cadre of volunteers navigate the regulatory labyrinth and a host of safety requirements to bring back to life an enduring symbol the nation’s can-do spirit and resiliency. Early next year, a 78-foot Patrol Torpedo 305 boat, being restored at the National WWII Museum, should be U.S. Coast Guard compliant and ready for passengers. The fast-attack PT-305, equipped with cannons, torpedoes and machine guns, served in the Mediterranean in 1944 and 1945, operating from Bastia, Corsica.
Monico Promotes Dicken to Manager
Monico Inc. announced the promotion of Bill Dicken to Manager – Technical Support. Dicken will now be managing the day-to-day activities of the technical support department, which includes phone support, field service, and the completion of special configuration projects. Dicken brings 17 years of experience gained with Rolls Royce engines and 12 years of customer service in aviation gas turbine engines. He has, both at Rolls Royce and at Monico, provided technical, logistical and commercial support for high-profile customers while also maintaining high levels of customer satisfaction.
Coast Guard Foundation to Host Awards Gala
The Coast Guard Foundation, a non-profit organization committed to the education, welfare and morale of all Coast Guard members and their families, announced that its 26th Annual Pacific Area Awards Dinner in tribute to the United States Coast Guard (USCG) will take place on Wednesday, August 3, 2011. Held for the second consecutive year in San Diego, the gala will honor the bravery and courage of our guardians in the region who enforce maritime law, protect our homeland and preserve the environment. Awards will be presented to recognize specific acts of outstanding heroism, leadership and mission achievement. The Coast Guard Foundation has supported the USCG in the Pacific Area with more than $100,000 for morale projects and scholarships in 2010.
This Day in U.S. Coast Guard History – November 8
1942- Landings made in Vichy-French-held North Africa by Allied forces. Coast Guard-manned vessels participated. 1959- The tanker Amoco Virginia, with a cargo of aviation gasoline, exploded and caught fire at Houston, Texas. US Coast Guard units in the Galveston-Houston area assisted local and Federal agencies in extinguishing the blaze. For 10 more days, Coast Guard air and surface units controlled a dangerous situation by spreading foam to reduce the fire hazard of leaking aviation gas, directing harbor traffic, pumping out the damaged vessel, and moving her to a safe dock. 1979-The crew of Coast Guard LORAN Station St. Paul Island, Alaska, rescued the crew of the Japanese factory fishing vessel Ryuyo Maru NR Two which had run aground near Tolstoi Point on St. Paul Island during a storm.
